Description |
Views show the exterior and interior the State House built 1732-1748 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley.
Exterior views show the front and rear elevations, including the rear gate entrance to Independence Square and the square.
Interior views show the Assembly Room when utilized as an exhibit gallery, including William Rush's wood statue of George
Washington (carved 1815); the Liberty Bell; framed artwork, predominately from the Charles Wilson Peale portrait collection,
and the "Rising Sun" chair (used by George Washington as he presided over the Constitutional Convention) displayed on top
of a desk.

Contains nine stereographic prints mounted on yellow or green mounts, including six with rounded corners and three with square
corners. Two images contain titles on the negatives, four contain titles printed on the mounts, and two have manuscript titles
on versos. Two images published as series number 1492 - Interior of Independence Hall, Philad'a. Five stereographs contain
printed text in paragraph form on versos surmounted by the title "Independence Hall, or "State House," Philadelphia" with
a vignette of the seal of Pennsylvania. Three include photographer's label pasted on versos: "From J-ames Cremer's stereoscopic
emporium, 18 South Eighth St., Philadelphia. Family groups taken for the stereoscope."
