Arcadia caption text: Mother Nature suspended commercial and passenger activity on the Delaware River in this c. 1860 winter image. Bare-masted schooners and small boats are docked along the snow-covered piers of Philadelphia harbor in the foreground as people ice skate on the frozen river in the background. Ice skating was a common activity on the impenetrable river before the use of steam-powered icebreakers. Organizations such as the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society provided skating instruction and rescued people who broke through the ice.
Digitization funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PW-506-19-10), 2010-2012.
