Description View looking west from above one of the rustic pavilions at the Fairmount Water Works showing the Wire Suspension Bridge spanning the Schuylkill River. The bridge, the first suspension bridge in the United States, was built between 1841-1842 after the designs of engineer Charles Ellet, Jr. It was removed in 1874. The pavilions, built near the reservoir at the waterworks between 1864-1866, were installed as a decorative improvement.
