Description: Racing print showing Whalebone running, mid-galop, during a harness race. The jockey wears a cap tied under his chin and holds a whip in his right hand. Also contains several lines of promotional text describing Whalebone's excellent performances including an 1827 New York trotting course race, which "he accomplished in 54 minutes & 6 seconds with great ease"; his defeat of Creeper, Lady Kate, Grey Squirrel & Moonshine on May 15, 1828 in a Hunting Park Association race worth $200; his victory over Mr. Spicer in another Hunting Park Association course on October 15, 1829, in which he ran 16 miles in 4 mile heats in the unprecedented time of 46 minutes & 11 seconds, and performed the third heat in 11 minutes and 17 seconds; another Hunting Park Association victory on October 23, 1830, winning a purse of $300 for "beating Sir Peter, Jerry, Comet & Top Gallant, and distancing all on the 4th heat"; his defeat of the Calf, Comet and Sir Andrew, winning the 2nd and 3rd heats (the Calf took the first) on the Union Course Long Island on December 6, 1830; his victory over Sweet Brier on the Hunting Park Course, where he won each mile except the 2nd and the 5th; and his performance of 8 minutes 20 seconds in a 2nd 3 mile heat in harness on the Hunting Park course on October 14, 1829. At the center of the panel, the oldest boy sits on a bench telling the younger children a story. Description: Advertisement containing an interior view of the shop at 116 Chestnut Street (ie. 320 Chestnut Street) after a daguerreotype depicting a long row of presses lined along the perimeter of the room near tall windows for natural light. Pressmen work on stones propped flat and on an angle. Description: Advertisement calendar for 1867 and 1868 containing a filigree border surrounding a view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith's Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an American flag. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk and stand on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn wagons and drays pass in the street. Description: Print containing a montage of 11 exterior and interior views of the volunteer hospital opened September 5, 1862 opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot. Central view shows a bustling street scene outside of the hospital. Horse-drawn carriages, possibly including an ambulance, arrive and depart; injured soldiers are carried by stretcher and assisted by fellow soldiers to the building; male and female pedestrians converse and traverse the streets; two boys attempt to help a man with his valise; and Zouaves patronize a female vendor's stand. Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Description: View showing the Dyottville Glass Works, in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the 50 buildings of the premier glass works, including the factory adorned with the sign "Dyottville Glass Works", farmhouses, and barns. Workers enter the factory and walk on the grounds. Also shows several skiffs docked in front of the complex. The works also had a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles." The factory ceased operations following Dyott's conviction for fraud in 1837 but resumed glass manufacturing in 1842 under the new ownership of Henry Seybert and was active until the end of the century., Philadelphia on Stone, Historical Society of Pennsylvania: Stauffer, vol. Title: Conflagration of the steam boat New Jersey on the Delaware River opposite Philada March 15th 1856 in which 60 persons lost their lives
Description: Shows, in the distance, clouds of smoke rising from the Philadelphia and Camden Ferry Co. steamboat under the winter night sky as rowboats race to and from the wreck. In the foreground, two survivors sit and cling to cakes of ice near floating debris. In the right of the image, her sister ferry "Dido" travels to the rescue, the ship's reflection visible in the water. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control.
