Print after the theatrical advertisement published by Eliphalet Brown, Jr. and James Brown depicting the most popular scene from the mid-19th century play about the lives of the New York city lower classes. Shows an African American boy, attired in torn and worn clothes, street dancing while surrounded by a crowd of spectators. Spectators include an African American man, boy, and woman marketer with a basket; Mose, the central character of a fireman b'hoy, and a white man fish monger, attired in torn and worn clothes. Also shows a white woman vendor near a broadside titled "Mose" to the right of the image and the slip in the background. From the 18th century, Long Island enslave people would cross the East River to sell produce or to street dance to earn money, fish, or eels at the Catherine Slip Market. Series of caricatures predominately satirizing the effects of the presidential policies of Abraham Lincoln on his re-election and the candidacy of Democratic nominee and former Commander of the U.S. Army, George McClellan, in the presidential election of 1864. Lincoln caricatures depict racist scenes and themes of election loss and show the president as a comic stage performer; a feeding open-mouthed tool of the abolitionists; as a defeated Robin Hood with his "Band of Brothers," (i.e. cabinet members Edwin Stanton, William Seward, and Gideon Welles); as weighed down by the "Old Keystone", a visual metaphor for the large number of Pennsylvania soldiers lost in the war; as a buffoon tripped up by his large boots of "military necessity"; as patronizing a miniature McClellan propped up on the "Chicago Platform"; as McClellan's puppeteer; and as "loved little and long" for his emancipation of the enslaved. McClellan caricatures primarily use the themes of McClellan, known as "The Young Napoleon," as a "MacNapoleon" and his contradictory personal and party platforms in relation to the war. Caricatures show "MacNapoleon" searching for the White House, childishly whining about his quest for the White house, and singing a "doleful ditty" about himself. Platform caricatures show McClellan as a squeeze doll who speaks two words - war and peace, and in a "Quandary" to choose between a ballerina representing war and another representing peace. The second shows Kemble being served dinner by a caricatured African American servant as she is "lying on [her] back" surrounded by "[her] dinner followed [her] thither" above quotes comparing her appetite to "Danaides' tale of credilable [sic] memory" and her being as fat as an "overstuffed pin cushion." The African American figure is portrayed with exagerrated features.[Plate 3?] satirizes a poem "To bed - to sleep - To sleep -perchance to be bitten!" she wrote about the onslaught of insects at night in her New York hotel room. Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Collection of stationery containing patriotic designs often used on patriotic envelopes, with a majority including a title, slogan, and/or verse. Designs predominately include views of regiment camps; images of soldiers, including battle and camp life scenes; patriotic symbols including flags, eagles, bells, shields, stars and the figure of liberty; portraiture of historic and military figures; and basic designs including stripes, colored edges, and lined borders. Unique designs with assigned LCP numbers include an untitled regiment view showing the soldiers playing baseball, possibly at Abner Doubleday's camp (RE-LCP 35); a view of Poughkeepsie from 1854 (SC-NW-LCP-3); the New York funeral procession for Abraham Lincoln on April 25, 1865 (SC-NW-LCP-4); two designs published by J.W. Barber of New Haven showing bars of music from "My Country Tis of Thee" (O-M-LCP-8) and an allegorical scene of Liberty fighting treason, rebellion, tyranny, and oppression (F-P-LCP-1). Collection also contains a series of seven Charles Magnus hand-colored designs containing birds-eye views and military maps. Historical The plan for the organization of the Sunday School Union of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was presented by Rev. C. S. Smith to the Council of Bishops at their annual meeting in Cape May, N. J. August 11, 1882. The bishops approved of the plan, and the Rev. C. S. Smith was appointed corresponding secretary. At the General Conference, which met in Baltimore, MD. May, 1884, the Union was adopted as one of the general departments of the church, and the Rev. C. S. Smith was unanimously elected corresponding secretary of the same. The building now owned and occupied by the Union was purchased February 28, 1888, at a cost of $9,000. The building is situated on the north side of the public square in the city of Nashville, Tenn., and is a handsome five story structure with a solid stone front. The printing department was organized February, 1889, and is known as the publishing house of the A. M. E. Sunday School union. The first book ever issued by a Colored publishing house in the history of the world was issued by the Union, September, 1890, with the title, "Poor Ben." The first Children's Day to be observed in the A. M. E. Church took place on the 4th Sunday in October, 1882

Portfolio containing three prints depicting African American men jockeys, portrayed in racist caricature, speaking in the vernacular, and attired in long underwear, during key moments from a two-mile heat at the Washington Race Course in Charleston, South Carolina. Pl. 1 shows the beginning of the race with three jockeys reigning in and spurring on their horses. Caption reads: At the tap of the drum they jump off from the stand, Be the track deep in mud or heavy with sand, At a pace which at once makes fast ones extend, An e'en the best winded cry bellows to mend. Pl. 2 shows two jockeys racing past a fence as one prepares to whip his mount that trails behind. Caption reads: And now they have reach'd the third mile, second heat, The mare is still going, the horse is dead beat; Say Sambo "Me know how Mass him do it, so me gib him de whip, and make him stick to it." Shows to the right an angel trumpeting salvation and wielding the Bible above a missionary preaching to a large group of Native Americans and a converted Black family kneeling and reaching toward the heavens; broken shackles and swords beside them. Opposite the scenes of salvation, a cross rises from the ground, bringing forth a river of redemption too late for the lost souls of a bejeweled "heathen" woman and a skull-headed man entangled by serpents. Copy of subscription print published in 1864 and 1866 for "Demorest's Monthly Magazine" after the painting of Lily May Spencer showing her family at a Fourth of July picnic in a grove near, possibly, the Passaic River, in Newark, N.J, the hometown of the Spencers. Shows Spencer's husband Benjamin in the center of the view, lying on his side, and with one hand on the broken rope of a tree swing. Family members surround him, seated and standing, and predominately laugh and clap, except for a boy who attempts to help him up and the artist who runs toward him with her arms out. Another child waves a flag while on her father's shoulders. Webster, a Whig senator from Massachusetts, died at his home in Marshfield in 1852 after falling from his horse. He wears a jacket with epaulette., Includes several lines of advertising text, including Mounier & Lallou's dissatisfaction policy of a new wig free of additional expense with "transportation at the cost of the purchasers. Imagery depicts City Hall, Continental Hotel, Girard Fire Insurance Company, interior of Independence Hall, "Bird's Eye View from Lemon Hill" showing the Fairmount Water Works, Market Street and Delaware Avenue, the storefront of optician William Y. McAllister and Alex. R. Harper & Bro., watches (728 Chestnut), and vignettes showing miners at work, and a view of laborers at work in a stone quarry juxtaposed with a view of Native American persons. Also includes a 1777 German calendar illustration showing Philadelphia along the Delaware River (.193x); an 1804? lottery ticket for the African Church of St. Thomas (.190x); a ca. 1833 proof sheet of bank notes in German for The Western Bank of Philadelphia; a ca. 1830 textile sewn on paper and illustrated with a genre scene in front of the "House of Refuge, Philadelphia"; a pocket-size political print depicting Philadelphia mayor-elect Morton McMichael holding a fox by its tail to satirize his 1865 election win over Daniel M. Fox; and a 1919 calligraphic envelope (in color inks) addressed to Mrs. Sarah Zook, Temple University Hospital, Broad & Ontario Streets, Phila, Pa. Illustrated flier for "comic head" mechanical target issued by the Mutual Novelty Manufacturing Company. Contains image of target (Patented Aug 28 1877), which includes the racist, comic head of an African American clown, portrayed in caricature with a slack jaw and grotesque features, and pictorial details of the "Target Arrow" (Pat. Sep. 5 1876). Flier also contains vignette of "Toy Target Arrow For Boys and Girls." Shows a child's hand pulling the arrow through an egg-shaped barrel. Vignette surrounded by advertising text reading "Throws the Arrow very accurately, and affords hours of amusement for both young and old. Made of hard wood, finely polished, beautifully colored. Advertisement depicting a "shoe blacking" competition between two African American shoe shiners to promote the manufactory of blacking established in 1832 by James S. Mason. Shows two African American men, portrayed in racist caricature, holding a brush, a canister of "Mason's" blacking, and a boot, while they dance on a table. An African American man fiddler sits on a stool and plays. In the foreground, a white man holds an oversized boot. A white shoe shine boy, his pack on his back, stands behind an older man holding his arm as he points at his reflection in the boot. In the left background, a troop of white Union soldiers marches in behind a parade marshal adorned in "M" insignias. The men carry a banner reading "Mason's (Original) Challenge Blacking (Philadelphia)," as well as boots, and signs spelling "M-A-S-O-N." In the right background, a crowd of spectators, including figures likely representing Germany, the Ottoman Empire, Britain, and possibly France, stand and watch the competition attentively. Scene also includes boxes of Mason's Challenge Blacking.
