She is attired in a fashionable off-the-shoulder white dress with dark stripes on the bodice and tiny polk dots on the skir also adorned with a dark trim. Dark-colored ribbons adorn the edges of her cap sleeves. Bouquets of flowers, floral wreathes, and other floral arrangements are displayed. A retracted awning with the name if the business adorns the building. A large garland of flowers is weaved across the awning frame. Potted plants line the base of the building and entryway near where the men stand. In the far left, the back of a horse traveling in the street near men patronizing a vendor's stand at the side of the flower store is visible. In the far right, signage for the adjacent business is partially visible. Florist Maximilian F. La Roche partnered with his brother-in-law Batlhazar Stahl in 1878. The partnership also managed several large greenhouses in Collingdale, Pa., which specialized in chrysanthemums and roses. Previously, La Roche had operated his own floral business in Philadelphia beginning circa 1876 when he purchased Brooker & Co. at 1319 Chestnut Street. La Roche removed his store to 1237 Chestnut in 1881. - Description
- Portrait photograph showing two African American men, side-by-side, attired in suits, as well as top hats with advertising text for Charles S. Higgins Company soap. One hat reads "Try it" and the other reads "Higgins German Laundry soap is the best." One man holds a swagger stick and the other a walking cane, and both stand in front of a backdrop depicting a bucolic mountain scene. Charles S. Higgins Company, established by Higgins's father W. B. Higgins in Brooklyn in 1846, manufactured "German Laundry soap" beginning around 1860, when Charles assumed the business. The laundry soap was packaged in a wrapper illustrated with an African American woman washing in a tub. By the early 1890s Charles S. Higgins left the firm still operated under his name and formed Higgins Soap Company. Court proceedings over trademarks and tradenames ensued and Higgins Soap Company became insolvent by the mid 1890s., Title supplied by cataloger., Photographer's imprint printed on verso. - Photographic reproduction of a lithographic facsimile of the original draft of the proclamation printed and sold as a fundraiser for the Soldiers Home of Chicago. Facsimile includes a portrait of Lincoln and patriotic vignette. Lincoln gave the draft to the organizers of the 1863 Northwestern Sanitary Fair to be sold at auction and then donated to the Chicago Historical Society. Draft was bought by Thomas B. - Stereograph, possibly published in London, depicting a scene satirizing race relations in America. Shows the dandy standing and with one foot on the boy's shoe shine box in front of a back drop depicted as a wall adorned with broadsides referencing abolition, slavery, and emancipation. The dandy is attired in striped and checkered pants, a jacket with tails, a ruffled shirt, and top hat. He holds a walking stick under one arm and a cigarette in his other hand. The boy kneels and shines the dandy's shoes with his shining supplies and tools by his box. Broadsides include a "playbill" reading "Adelphi. Tonight The White Slave. Octoroon Farce" and an advertisement for "Fast Clipper. Clyde. For New Orleans." Other posts read "No Slavery. Freedom" and "Great Meeting. Negro Emancipation. - Series of titled views of the exterior and interior of the facilities of the Civil War volunteer relief agency near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues in Philadelphia. Predominately shows the patriotically adorned refreshment saloon with male and female members of the working committee, staff, and a patient in a robe posed among rows of tables set for a dining service. Also includes a view of patients posed near beds and a model ship in a ward at the hospital and a large crowd of men and boys standing in front of the hospital and saloon. Exterior also shows a parital view of the cannon, known as "Fort Brown." - Depicts a group of men harvesting hay in the field behind Stouton. Three African American men stand on and near a horse-drawn cart overloaded with hay, while a white man and two boys stand near a horse-drawn plow, operated by a man neatly attired in a long shirt and tie. Stouton, the former country seat of William MacPherson, was inhabited by the Webster family beginning in 1805., William MacPherson was the son of Captain John MacPherson (1726-1792) from Edinburgh. William served as lieutenant for the British army during the first year of the Revolutionary War, but joined the Colonial army under the leadership of Lafayette. Appointed surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia in 1789 and commanded the Philadelphia battalion, the "MacPherson Blues", during the Whiskey Insurrection in 1794. Married Margaret Stout and resided at their country seat "Stouton". Site later named MacPherson Park., Attributed to John H. Webster but may have been taken by other Webster family members.
