- Paper doll of an unclothed figure of a young Black girl with moveable limbs. The girl is depicted with short, cropped, tightly curled hair, auburn eyes, and slightly smiling. A blue-beaded string necklace adorns her neck. She also wears white, above-the-ankle length socks and black "Mary Jane" shoes. The articulated limbs are attached by brass brads to a white cardboard torso, likely not the original. About the late 1880s, Littauer & Boysen (established circa 1882), a premier German chromolithographer of novelties, began to print articulated dolls for the paper box company. Dennison sold the German firm's dolls to further market its special line of tissue/crepe paper as doll's clothing. The Massachusetts company, established 1844, also manufactured shipping tags, gummed labels, and holiday tags. The firm opened a salesroom in Philadelphia in 1862. In 1898, the firm consolidated operations in Framingham, Ma. from plants in Roxbury, Ma. - View shows Mount Pleasant mansion in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia flanked by outbuildings. The view is somewhat obscured by trees. The Middle-Georgian country house was built 1761-1765 for Captain John Macpherson after the designs of Thomas Nevil on Mount Pleasant Drive in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Pa. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. - Collection of silhouettes, primarily bust-length and cut at a Peale's Museum (Philadelphia, Baltimore or New York) in the early 19th century. Items often contain physiognotrace impressed lines and some contain amateur pencil markings. A small number also include eyelash cutouts, contain ink details to depict hair or collars, or are folded in fours. Many silhouettes also include hair adornments and other fashion details, including ribbons, bows, collars, bonnets, hats, and flowers. Collection also contains one non-portrait cutout composed of a bird, several branches, and a temple-like structure, as well as several numbered leaves of silhouettes removed from an album. Leaves contain 1- 8 silhouettes, some cut and some in ink. The silhouettes also show flowers adorning clothing, hair, and as bouquets; hair ornaments; ribbons; and hats. Some silhouettes depicted as if framed or with pictorial details or overdrawn with scales of dimension. - View of the diorama with mannequin figures and a painted backdrop exhibited during the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 recreating a scene from the Battle at Yorktown in October 1781.
