Description: Advertisement showing the interior of the two-level dry goods store containing a parquet floor and Corinthian columns, and busy with customers at 809-811 Chestnut Street. Men and women patrons mill around and stop at the display counters, one centrally located and the other against the wall. Compartments of textiles line the wall to the right and a women clerk pulls a bolt of cloth as another assists a female customer accompanied by her stylishly dressed daughter. A couple with a child talks with a female clerk at the large C-shaped central counter lined with stools that encloses an island of shelves displaying dry goods. Three men convene near a woman talking to a teller behind a partition to the left. People ascend and descend the semi-circular staircase to the second floor balcony from which bolts of cloth, most with patterns, hang. Title: [Fairmount Water Works near Philadelphia]
Description: View from the floodgates, i.e. race bridge, looking toward the eastern side of the water works that were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Shows several park visitors on the bridge who observe one another. Includes couples on promenade; a boy with a hoop; a woman watching two men converse about a sheet of paper; and a family whose daughters meekly peer at an African American couple. Two dogs bark in the direction of the African American woman who sits next to her companion who stands. Title: Washington and Lafayette Benefical Society Incorporated April 12th 1825
Description: Membership certificate containing a scene showing the December 31, 1777 meeting between Marquis De Lafayette and General Washington during the American Revolution. On the banks of the Delaware River, under the watch of guards, Washington attended by his officers extends his hand to the young Franch Major General who is accompanied by his two officers. The men stand in front of a row of tents beside which a band of uniformed militia stand near an armed frontiersman and Native American witnessing the event. In the background, militia troops drill and ships sail on the Delaware. Also contains a vignette showing a society member in his sick bed attended by his wife and fellow members. The seated men talk and sit at a table playing cards as the ailing man's son, holds a hoop, and cries at the foot of the bed. Vignette bordered by two posted schedules of the month, day, and hour of "Stated Meetings" for the year that is also printed with the notice that "The Roll shall be called precisely 30 Minutes after the time above specified. Title: St. Augustine's Church
Description: Exterior view showing the Romanesque-style Catholic church built in 1801 after the designs of Douglas Fitzmaurice Fagan at 260-262 North Fourth Street. Includes the tower built in 1829 after the designs of William Strickland. Several parishioners, including men, women, and children, congregate in small clusters on the sidewalk in front of the church. Title: Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia
Description: View looking east down Spring Garden Street from Broad Street showing the Odd Fellows Hall at the northeast corner of Spring Garden and Broad streets (400 block N. Broad). A horse-drawn carriage is parked and another passes in front of the hall enlarged in 1853 after the designs of Samuel Sloan for the benevolent and charitable organization, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The roof of the building is adorned with statues representing Charity and Hope, tenets of the organization and red drapes are visible in the second floor windows. Description: Advertisement showing the busy coal yard along the Schuylkill River. Yard workers haul cauldrons of coal by pulley and load and transport trucks on a multi-level wharf elevated above and surrounded by piles of coal. Title: Murphy & Allison Car builders. 1908 Market Street, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Car Factory & Bolt Nut & Washer Works," of John Murphy and J. C. Allison, also proprietors of the Girard Tube Works, who established a partnership in 1851 at 1908 Market Street. A completed rail car and a horse-drawn double decker omnibus depart from the sign-covered factory and "Office of the Girard Tube Works." A worker labors on a rail car in an upper window, a man on horseback stops near the entrance to the "Blacksmith Shop," and clusters of pedestrians walk in front of the works. A small crowd flanks the omnibus that is adorned with illustrations of rail cars as it leaves the factory bay. In the foreground, men and boys, across from two men shaking hands, inspect an ornately painted "City Passenger R.R." car on display in the street in front of the factory. Nearby, a boy admires an elegantly dressed lady while a newsboy hawks a paper to a gentleman on promenade with two ladies who pass a woman, possibly attired in mourning garb. Murphy & Allison assumed proprietorship of Girard Tube Works, manufacturer of wrought iron gas tubes, in 1856 and began construction of cars for the City Passenger Railways circa 1857. Description: Advertisement showing the four buildings of the wholesale department (organized 1866) of the business established by Thomas Leedom and Adam Shaw in 1865. Description: Shows the colorfully-painted steam locomotive adorned with the maker plate "Richard Norris & Son 1856" that was built for the railway to Sagua La Grande, Cuba. An engineer with mustache and wide-brimmed hat operates the train engine traveling tracks running through tropical scenery. Title: Diploma awarded by the Lebanon County Agricultural and Horticultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing an ornate border with seven vignettes related to agriculture and horticulture. Vignettes show a small herd of sheep; a farmer at his plow; a group of cattle; a town hall; a pair of horses; an iron worker with his assistant at a forge (resembling John Neagle's "Pat Lyon at his Forge"); and a gathering of barn animals. Animals include a pig, chickens, ducks, geese, and a turkey. Title: Episcopal Hospital (Late Leamy estate)
Description: View showing the hospital, also known as the "Bishop Potter Memorial House," opened in 1852 in the donated former residence of Philadelphia merchant John Leamy at Front Street and Lehigh Avenue in Kensington. A horse-drawn wagon departs from the hospital grounds along the landscaped oval driveway in front of the institution. Also shows two figures near the left wing of the building. The hospital, founded by Bishop Alonzo Potter as a religious institution, provided health services and religious services to individuals "without distinction of country, creed, or color" under the administration of church communicants. Title: The monument to liberty to be erected in Independence Square, Philadelphia, designed by William W. Story
Description: View showing an unexecuted monument commissioned by the citizen's group National Commemoration Monument Association and designed by sculptor William Wetmore Story for the re-landscaping of the square for the Centennial celebration of 1876. Shows the figure of Liberty standing upon a column adorned with female allegorical figures; an eagle encircled by stars; fearsome animal heads; and floral ornaments. The monument was to be placed in the center of the square at the intersection of the main paths. Description: Advertisement showing the two Italianate-style buildings (1101-1103 Frankford, built 1851-1856, and 1045-1055 Frankford, built 1871) in Fishtown of the hosiery manufactory established in 1843. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Description: Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing central views of the "Philadelphia Public Buildings," Independence Hall (1776) and the new City Hall (1876), surrounded by vignettes; allegorical, patriotic, and historical figures; state seals; and references to prominent historical, national and local personages.
