Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. - Glass negative showing H. Carvill Lewis' science classroom in Founder's Hall at Haverford College (founded 1833). Long tables hold various tubes, burners, and vials. A taller counter sits at the front of the room with a blackboard behind it. To the left are shelves holding more glass vials. Founders Hall, built in 1833, was the first building of the Haverford School, later College. It served as the only living and learning quarters of the College until 1877 when Barclay Hall was built. Lewis graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1876 with a masters of Arts degree. In 1879, he went on to work for the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania for three years. - Description
- Glass negative showing the two-story Deshler-Morris House (later 5442 Germantown Avenue) with shuttered windows and a balcony on the second floor. Photo taken from the yard, facing the house diagonally. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. The building is located on the corner of Main Street and Church Lane and has two floors above the shop on the first floor. Signage is visible on the side and partially on the front of the building and reads "C.L. Eberle." A canvas sign hangs across the sidewalk and reads "Miss Kate Cotton Millinery." A man stands on the sidewalk in front of the store next to a tall tree growing in a planter on the sidewalk. Eberle purchased this drug store from Abraham Rex in 1859. The Beach House, a large building with two flagpoles, stands in the background. Robert Stockton bought the land of what would become Sea Girt in 1853. After his death in 1866, developers bought the land and in 1875 the Sea Girt Land and Improvement Company took over Stockton’s old mansion, added wings to either side, and renamed it the Beach House. The Beach House was a popular hotel for many years, reopening in 1920 as Stockton Hotel. The first floor of the building houses a storefront with various kinds of merchandise piled on the sidewalk under an awning. Trees line the sidewalk to the side of the house and a streetlight is visible in the foreground. James De la Plaine settled in Germantown in 1691. Before his death in 1750, he built a house. It was afterward owned by E.B. Paramore and used as a corner store before the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Company bought the property in 1885. The Rev. B. - Glass negative showing the Natural Bridge extending up the left side and over the center of Cedar Creek with a rocky streambed with trees and other foliage lining either bank. A sign reading "Welcome GAR Post 15" is visible under the bridge in the distance. The Natural Bridge was likely made from an ancient underground river and became a popular tourist destination by the early 19th century. It was once a sacred site of the Monacan tribe. Thomas Jefferson purchased the surrounding land in Cedar Creek, Va. and built up inns for visitors. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 for veterans of the Union forces in the Civil War. The politically influential group contributed to the elections of five presidents and began the tradition of Memorial Day in 1868. - Glass negative showing Jet, a small black dog sitting on his hind legs in a begging position on the porch of the Morris family home Avocado with George Vaux Jr., Marriott Morris' third cousin, on a chair in the background. Vaux sits with his legs crossed. The railing creates long shadows on the porch floor. Elliston Perot Morris bought property in Sea Girt, N.J. in 1875, where he built the summer home Avocado after designs by Quaker architect Hibberd Yarnall. Morris left Avocado, named after a Perot family estate in Bermuda, to his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris in his will. It was sold in 1947 after her death. - Glass negative showing a large elm tree growing in the center of a garden at the Deshler-Morris House. A path runs down the left side of the lawn, which is bordered by tall, leafy shrubs. The bare branches of another tree are visible in the foreground. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. - Glass negative showing a three-story brick iron foundry at the former Howell Iron Works at Allaire, N.J. Wooden beams stand in haphazard piles inside the rounded archways on the lower level of the building. Miss Cohen and Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris stand in front, looking in different directions. James P. Allaire (1785-1858) founded the Allaire Iron Works Company (later Howell Iron Works) in 1815. Allaire, New Jersey became a factory town for the company that built engines for steamboats circa 1824. The row homes for workers were completed in 1833, the blast furnace was made in 1831, and the Episcopalian church was built 1832-1836. Financial difficulties and discovery of iron ore deposits in Pennsylvania closed the Company in 1850.
