- View showing the gatehouse, designed by Thomas Ustick Walter, to the cemetery chartered 1849 near Diamond and Twenty-Fourth streets. Street and pedestrian traffic is visible in the foreground. Men, women, and children walk and stand on the sidewalk to and in front of the gatehouse. In the street, a carriage and wagon pass as several individuals ride on horseback, including a man fending off a barking dog raised on his hind legs. - View showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. Also shows visitors, including a woman with a parasol, strolling around the memorial. Another drinks from a cup at the "Matthew" fountain. - Description
- Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Clusters of spectators, including men, women, and children gather near the firefighters and under the market sheds. - Advertisement showing the busy interior of the saloon and concert hall built 1857 on the 500 block of North Third Street. Men, women, and children patrons sit, drink, read, approach, and are served at several tables in front of a stage. In the foreground, men gather near two bars on each side of the saloon. The bar in the right of the image contains a soda fountain. Each is manned by bartenders and is stocked with bottles of liquor. A framed painting, a wall clock, and a large mirror decorate the areas. Several hanging and plotted plants adorn the balconies that are lined with windows. In the background, an actor and two actresses perform on the stage that is flanked by statuary and has a painted backdrop. Also contains a vignette, bordered by filigree, showing the exterior of the hall. View includes crowds of patrons entering the two entrances of the establishment. - View predominately showing the yard of the complex built circa 1812-1813 for the earliest American white lead manufactory founded by Samuel Wetherill Jr. in the 1780s. Factory workers labor between a horse-drawn cart, and rows and stacks of crates, barrels, and vats, which cover the yard that is surrounded by buildings. Several smoke stacks adorn the roofs of the shops. Following the circa 1812 fire of the Wetherill white lead manufactory at Broad and Chestnut streets, the new factory was built at the northeast corner of 12th & Cherry streets, including the addition of a chemical manufactory. Trees partially obscure the main residence that is flanked by outbuildings that were used as an ice-house, bath-house and hot-house. A fountain adorns the lawn on which two deer graze. In the foreground, two men travel on horseback and a third walks with a cane. They pass on the dirt road in front of the stone wall surrounding the property. The estate was originally built for Governor Thomas Mifflin in the 18th century and was later acquired by Fairmount Park. - Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 19 elegantly attired men and women in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 8 men and two women socializing. Most of the men wear suits with striped or plaid pants, long coats tapered at the waist, and bow ties. Some hold top hats and canes. The women wear a bonnet, shirtwaist, and full skirt or a riding habit. Furnishings include a marble pedestal, and mosaic carpeting and wallpaper. Lower panel shows General Zachary Taylor and two military officers, in uniforms and mounted on horses, flanked by 6 male civilians in front of a military training ground. A couple in bed coats sits on a chaise lounge. The man accompanied by a boy, attired in a military-style suit, talks to another man, wearing a suit with patterned pants. The woman talks with another lady attired in a bonnet, shawl, and full skirt. A third gentleman stands near two columns to the left. He wears a suit with a lavishly patterned vest and striped pants. On the opposite side of the columns, two women in evening dresses sit at a piano. One wears a feather in her hair and the other wears an elaborate up do with ringlettes on the side. - Bird's eye view showing the hospital opened June 9th, 1862 at Forty-fourth Street and Baltimore Avenue. The hospital complex is surrounded by tents to accommodate the high number of patients as a result of the battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania. - Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease."
