In the foreground, a man stands on the bucolic river bank watching two sculling teams race near a rowboat in the river. In the left background, the engine house, mill house, and Fairmount, i.e., Reservoir Hill of the water works are visible. A dock floats above the works and the covered Lancaster-Schuylkill Bridge spans the river in the distance. Also shows the toll house or superintendant's house of the Schuylkill Navigation Company in the right of the image. The Fairmount Water Works were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. The bridge, also known as the Upper Ferry Bridge, was erected 1809-1812, with Robert Mills serving as architect, and Lewis Wernwag as engineer. It burned in 1838., Copyright secured by J. T. - Possible proof copy of view looking east showing the Second Bank of the United States, built 1821-1824 after the designs of William Strickland at 420 Chestnut Street. Also shows the neighboring Bank of Philadelphia, completed in 1837, also after the designs of Strickland, at 400-408 Chestnut. Pedestrians traverse the sidewalks in front of the banks and across from the buildings. Couples promenade and greet each other, and patrons ascend the stairs of the U.S. Bank and convene in front of the Philadelphia Bank. - Advertisement for the iron foundry established by the Morris family in 1828 at 16th and Market streets. Contains two views above and below the title. Upper view shows the interior of the foundry where in the center a foreman talks with a gentleman, possibly a Morris, surrounded by workers and machinery. In the right, iron workers use a hoist to pour a cauldron of liquid ore into a mold near an open entranceway. In the left, a worker is bent over and using a hammer near humongous cogs and cylinders. Tools including a sledge hammer, pliers, and shovels rest on the floor of the shop and pulleys hang from the ceiling. Lower scene shows a laborer at a large piece of machinery with gears, shafts, piston, and a lever. All the workers wear caps or hats. Israel Morris assumed operations of this foundry in 1848 after I. - Advertisement for the Philadelphia branch (est. circa 1843) of the rail express service company started by Alvin Adams of Boston in 1840. Shows a line of freight cars being pulled by a fireball and lightning across train tracks on a stone culvert in a wilderness setting. The cars are marked with the city and name of its recipients, including Boston & New York, Adams & Co.; Philada. & Baltimore, Adams & Co.; Baltimore, Washington & Richmond, Rogers & Co.; Baltimore & Wheeling, Green & Co. A creek with rocky banks flows through the culvert. Also includes an American eagle standing on a rocky ledge rising about the freight cars. - Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer at 120, i.e., 324 Chestnut Street. Shows two well-dressed women in a boudoir that is decorated with carpet, drapes, and a candlelabra. One woman combs her long, lush, flowing hair with her back to a nightstand with a mirror as she looks at the second woman with short wispy hair. Perfume bottles rest on the night stand. Also contains an ornamental border including columns and advertising text. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair." - Advertisement showing the two Italianate-style buildings (1101-1103 Frankford, built 1851-1856, and 1045-1055 Frankford, built 1871) in Fishtown of the hosiery manufactory established in 1843. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Pedestrians also fill the sidewalks and street. A boy flies a kite near a gentleman tipping his hat to a woman and child. Laborers transport sacks over their shoulder and by pushing a handcart. A postman is on route to deliver mail across from a man accompanying another using a shoulder strap to carry a basket of rags. A lady peers into one of the several large front windows of Landenberger & Co. Around the corner, two other fashionable women promenade past crates lining the side of the older building. A cupola and an American flag adorn its roof., Around the corner of the newer building inscribed with the date the business was established, a man leads a bridled horse past a wood bin. Birds fly above the building adorned with a weather vane decorated with a sheep. Also contains two vignettes of the company seal printed below the image. Seal includes a crown and two eagles. Landenberger & Co. was the only Philadelphia factory in the late 1850s to produce hosiery, opera hoods, comforters, shawls, and scarves. The factory expanded in 1870 as a result of the massive increase in sales of hosiery and blankets spurred by the Civil War. On the river, vessels sail past Smith's Island. Also shows, in the foreground, the busy ferry and coach stop at Cooper's Point in Camden. Near the ferry house, individuals wait to board the stage coach express to New York, men gallop in on horseback, a farmer rides a horse of a team of four hauling a large bale of hay, passengers board the horse and passenger ferry readying for departure, and men fish on the river banks.
