Title: Smith Memorial postcards
Description: Contains views of the Smith Memorial gateway designed by James Windrim & Son and built 1897-1912 at the Forty-first Street entrance to Fairmount Park. Built in honor of Civil War soldiers. Consists of two pedestals flanking Concourse Drive near Memorial Hall. Both sides have palladian arches and equestrian bronze statues on columns. Various sculptors produced different statues for the memorial. Daniel Chester French created the George Meade statue; Charles Grafly created the John Reynolds statue; Edward C. Title: Washington Monument postcards
Description: Depicts equestrian statue of George Washington on a pedestal surrounded by four fountains and allegorical figures that represent four rivers: the Delaware, the Hudson, the Potomac and the Mississippi Rivers. Statues on the lowest tier portray "typical" American human figures and animals. Designed by Rudolf Siemering in 1897 and unveiled at the Green Street entrance to Fairmount Park. Moved to Eakins Oval at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1928. Title: Strawberry Mansion postcards
Description: Contains views of Strawberry Mansion in Fairmount Park including the entrance stairway with a group of women and children; the drive and a partial view of the Strawberry Mansion trolley bridge; the fountain statue; the spring; the top of Strawberry Hill showing people picnicking and reclining on the green and several views of the mansion house. Judge William Lewis commissioned the mansion house, also known as Summerville, in 1789. In the 1820s Joseph Hemphill bought the property and added two wings to the house. His son Coleman grew strawberries from roots imported from Chile, giving the property its popular name, Strawberry Mansion. The house became a picnicking spot and restaurant in 1835. Includes views of a waterfall; the Springfield Avenue Bridge and the Valley Green Inn taken from various angles. Valley Green Inn is the only surviving roadhouse from the nineteenth century. Depicts the entrance to the zoo, flanked by two pavilions built 1875-1876 after designs by Furness & Hewitt; the statue of The Dying Lioness designed 1873-1875 by Wilhelm Franz Alexander Friedrich Wolff near the entrance pavilions; a rustic bridge; a flower garden; the Carnivora House; the Monkey House near the lake; the Beaver dam; the shady walk showing fish pond; swan pond; the bird house; the interior of a flying cage in the bird house; the corner of a polar bear den and the zoo barn. Title: Chew Mansion postcards
Description: Exterior view of front and side of the colonial residence built 1763-1767 by master carpenter Jacob Knor for Philadelphia attorney Benjamin Chew at 6401 Germantown Avenue. Shows the facade of the two-story stone building with a pediment over the front door, shuttered windows, and dormers and chimneys on the roof. Also depicts the entrance drive to the Chew grounds. Chew House, also known as Cliveden, was the site of the turning point in the Battle of Germantown in 1777. The Chew family enslaved people of African descent in the city of Philadelphia and in Germantown during the 18th and 19th centuries. Description: Exterior views of the former residence of John Johnson built 1765-1768 by master builder Jacob Knor at 6306 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. John Johnson resided in the house during the Battle of Germantown. The dwelling sustained damage including a hole in the parlor door caused by a cannon ball and a chipped corner. It served as a station on the Underground Railroad. The Johnson family owned the house until 1908. The Woman's Club of Germantown purchased the house in 1917, and in 1980, gifted the house and its contents to the Germantown Mennonite Historic Trust to operate as a house museum. Description: Exterior views of front facade and side of stone church, showing roundel window, a large palladian window and entrance door flanked by a shallow portico. Also includes a view of the cemetery in the background., Contains 4 postcards printed in color and 8 printed in black and white., Also known as Church of the Brethren, founded by Alexander Mack in 1708 near Crefeldt in North Prussia. Persecution drove the congregation to Philadelphia in 1719 and in 1723 the first Dunkard or German Baptist Brethren Church was organized in Germantown. The congregation originally worshipped in a building erected by Christopher Sauer (4653 Main Street) and then in a house secured by Peter Pettikoffer, who begged for the money to erect the building.
