- Description
- Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Clusters of spectators, including men, women, and children gather near the firefighters and under the market sheds. - Print commemorating the 100th anniversary of the nation, celebrated at the Centennial Exhibition through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art in Philadelphia. Contains the text of the Declaration of Independence and the Proclamation Emancipation bordered by several historical and allegorical vignettes, scenes, and views that symbolize the social, political, and technological progress of the country. Oval frames surround the texts, which encircle bust-length portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The frames are adorned with banners labeled with the names of the original 13 colonies and the 38 states recognized as of 1876. Two bird's eye views showing the development of a cityscape, possibly New York City, from 1776 to 1876 are visible between the framed texts. - Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Columns also contain allegorical figures to represent the years 1776 and 1876. Justice and Independence (depicted as white women and holding the Declaration), and a prostrate British soldier represent the year 1776 and Peace and Liberty (depicted as white woman and holding a "Ballot"), and a seated enslaved African American man free from his shackles represent the year 1876. - View depicting eighteen trotting horse teams racing on a dirt path passed the South Philadelphia hotel, surrounded by lush trees and near an open stable. White men stand on the covered porch and converse and watch the teams including one steered by a one-armed gentleman. Near the stable, a white boy and an African American man, probably a stablehand, wave their hats at the racers. Contains a key to the names of all the race horses below the image. The park, established in 1855 by the Point Breeze Park Association of sportsmen, promoted trotting races as agricultural exhibitions to circumvent an 1817 city ban of horse racing. - Advertisement with ornate border containing a series of vignettes displaying several types of wagons, coaches, and carts produced by the manufactory. Vignettes are captioned with details of the products uses and surround a central view of the exterior of the busy "Simons, Coleman & Co. National Wagon Works" factory and office at No. 1109 North Front Street. Vignettes depict: African American plantation workers transporting sugar cane to a barge by a "cane cart"; laborers and settlers hauling materials out West by "road wagon" and "catamaran"; an ambush of U.S. Army soldiers, baggage wagon, and ambulance by Native Americans; and a busy Philadelphia port scene with a disinterested constable overseeing the wharf congested with carts and wagons as docked Henry Simons's factory ships ready for departure. Also contains an allegorical scene with a Northern factory worker and his Southern patron extending each other their hands before the shadowy figure of a factory agent; a large American eagle clutching the American flag; promotional text; and a listing of the factory's several business locations and names of agents. - Civil War souvenir print containing six views of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon at the southwest corner of Washington and Swanson Avenues and the Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon at 1009 Ostego Street. Contains a large central view of the exterior of the Union Saloon with troops arriving, entering the dining saloon, and departing on a Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad car as crowds of people flock around them. Other views depict soldiers using the wash basins adjoining the Cooper Shop Saloon; pro-Union flags and Saloon banners; the Union Saloon's outside washing and cooking departments including an African American man carrying a pail of food; and interiors of both saloons where male and female volunteers attend to long tables of food and a large simmering vat on a hearth. Contains an eagle clutching large American flags and a pro-Union banner above the scenes. - Lithograph after genre painter John Lewis Krimmel's 1821 watercolor, "Parade of Victuallers." Depicts a view from publisher M. Carey & Son's Bookshop at the southeast corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets of the March 15, 1821 trade union parade organized by butcher William White to celebrate, promote, and sell the city's high quality meat stock. The streets, balconies, doorways, and open windows teem with spectators, including an African American man oyster peddler sitting upon his cart and a small white boy displaying an illustrated banner inscribed, "Fed by William White." Image includes: the crowd watching white smocked victuallers on horseback turn on to Fourth Street pass the grocery of William Whelan; a two-tier horse-drawn platform with a band and a handler with a live ox and banner inscribed, "Fed by Lewis Clapier"; carts of meat; floats, including a replica of the ship, "Louis Clapier"; and a hot air balloon inscribed, "Fed by White," floats in the sky. - Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works." - Dramatic view of the steamboat engulfed in flames and smoke, the captain still at the helm as the passengers escape into the icy river. Panicked-looking passengers jump into the water already teeming with disaster victims, including an African American man, who thrash, swim, and attempt to stay upon and assist others onto cakes of ice, debris, and a single rowboat. Rescuers from the nearby wharf, including firemen, work in a frantic manner and desperately throw a rope to a white woman standing on an ice floe. Also shows a horse on the fire engulfed deck and a white woman propelled by a flame off of the rear of the boat. A sign for "Baths" is visible on the riverbank in the background. Contains the names of the 107 white and "colored" dead, missing, and saved passengers in three columns below the image. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as a result of defective boilers, a fireplace, and brick work. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Several warmly dressed white pedestrians, hall officials, and a policeman mill about and converse on the sidewalk; white children throw snowballs and play with a sled; horse-drawn sleighs pass by; white men shovel snow off the street and hall steps; and an African American man carrying a basket of celery and a dead goose stops in the street and looks behind him and toward the passing sled. Phillips' busy four-story equestrian store at 12 South Fifth Street selling "ladies and gentlemen's saddles, single and double harnesses, and bridles and whips." Saddles, bridles, harnesses, and blankets are prominently displayed in the storefront window and on the building facade. On the upper floors, several white men employees work by open windows. Elegantly dressed, white men patrons converse near the entryway and four horses are lined up in the street awaiting and receiving service including a pair reined in by an African American man coach driver. Partial view of the adjacent building containing the carpenter, W.B. Morrell, is visible. Lacey and Phillips, established in 1845, remained at the site until 1854. The firm, known as the finest horse equipment makers in the world, won the first and only prize medal for harness at the World Fair in 1851 and a gold medal at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853. - Exterior view of the coffee house and merchants' exchange at the southwest corner of Front and Market streets in Philadelphia during the colonial era. An auction of enslaved African American people occurs outside the coffee house and pedestrians traverse the sidewalks and street, including an African American woman carrying a basket on her head. Views of the adjacent printing house and book store of "Pennsylvania Journal" publisher, William Bradford, are visible. Erected in 1702 and established as a coffee house in 1754 by Bradford, the site was a public center for social and economic activities during the later 18th century, including auctions of enslaved people. - Racist caricature simultaneously mocking and condoning the pretentiousness and bigotry of early 19th century Philadelphia Quakers toward their "social inferiors." Shows a Philadelphia road in front of a small home with an open picket fence and a visitor arriving on horseback. In front of the fence, a dark skinned traveler, possibly an Irishman or African American, with buck teeth and carrying a knapsack and a walking stick, asks a rotund white Quaker man and his attractive prim and proper daughter, "I say, this isn't the road to Philadelphy, honey, is it?" The father responds indignantly to the "Friend," that he is not only asking a question, but also telling a lie, and of course it is the road., Attributed to E.W. - Exterior view of the rough cast second edifice of the African American church at 125 South 6th Street. Pedestrians and church attendees, predominately women, stroll the sidewalk and enter the house of worship adorned with a simple stone tablet inscribed, "Bethel Church." Known as "Mother Bethel," the church was formed from African American congregants discriminated against by the Methodist Episcopal Church.
