Description: Honorary membership certificate containing vignettes of Weccacoe Fire Company engine houses and firefighting equipment between 1840 and 1860 within a decorative border adorned with filigree, bugles, and axes. American flags, laurel wreaths, and an eagle with a shield surmounts the text in the central portion of the certificate, below which is an 1860 view of the fire company’s engine house on the 100 block of Queen Street in Southwark. Title: Citizens Volunteer Hospital, corner of Broad St. & Washington Avenue
Description: Print containing a montage of 11 exterior and interior views of the volunteer hospital opened September 5, 1862 opposite the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad depot. Central view shows a bustling street scene outside of the hospital. Horse-drawn carriages, possibly including an ambulance, arrive and depart; injured soldiers are carried by stretcher and assisted by fellow soldiers to the building; male and female pedestrians converse and traverse the streets; two boys attempt to help a man with his valise; and Zouaves patronize a female vendor's stand. Other views show the "Interior of Hospital" where women volunteers and doctors attend to bed-ridden soldiers; the "Kitchen" equipped with an ice box, cooking stove, and heating stove where two women prepare food on a counter; the "Dining Room" in which several soldiers eat at three long rows of tables near a heating stove; the "Laundry" room where women sort, fold, and wash cloths in a sink, near a large vat of boiling water; the "Ladies Kitchen" containing cupboards of dishware, a small cooking stove, and a rack of cooking utensils in which three women work; the "Wash Room" in which four men wash up at a trough of sinks; the "Drug Room" in which a pharmacist distills drugs for a soldier and women volunteer in front of a wall of medicinal bottles; a female volunteer at the counter of the "Store Room" attended by a man surrounded by several shelves packed with supplies; the "Bath Room" lined with tubs in which a soldier begins to undress; and female volunteers setting tables in the "Officers Dining Room.", Also includes two American flags draped over the borders of one of the views. Title: Jacob Haehnlen's lithographic & steam powered letter press printing rooms
Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1870. Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two paneled scenes of 22 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight men, a woman, and two boys socialize in clusters of three and four. The men and boys predominately wear suits, and the woman wears a ruffled layered dress with full skirt and as well as a bonnet. The other male figures wear a bed jacket and cap (man) and a dress with sash over bloomers (boy). A large vanity and two chairs furnish the room decorated with framed paintings, carpet, drapery, and wallpaper. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene set before an oceanside.
