- Advertisement showing the large industrial complex, including warehouses, storage sheds, and a reservoir originally established in 1848 by Powers & Weightman. Several of the buildings contain working smokestacks. A horse-drawn wagon departs from the main entranceway and a number of others are visible within the complex. Train tracks run within and along the periphery of the plant. A locomotive with train cars, horse–drawn freight cars, and free standing freight cars are visible on the tracks. Fenced pasture land is visible in the background. Also contains two titled insets in the lower corners. "Tartaric and Citric Acid Department, Falls of Schuylkill" includes horse-drawn wagons arriving and crossing a small bridge in the foreground. "Laboratory for Fine Chemicals, Ninth and Parrish Streets" includes trains traveling in the foreground. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United States. In the right of the image, a lady converses with a cricket player near a couple conversing with spectators behind the brickwall of the stand. - Advertisements for the late 19th-century Philadelphia lithographic firm, originally established as a blank book manufactory ca. 1874 by bookbinders and brothers John and August Hofstetter. Name of the establishment ornamented with pictorial details, including a landscape view, a book, and artist's brushes. Prints contain a sentimental and comic scene. Sentimental scene shows a peasant girl, accompanied by a dog, walking through the woods and knitting. Comic scene shows a gentleman, near a lake, inspecting his rear covered in paint in front of a bench adorned with the sign "Paint." Also includes the promotion "Color Work a Specialty." - Description
- Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Steamboats with smoke billowing from the stacks and sailing vessels with men on deck approach the piers in the foreground. The Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., formed by J.E. Tygert, H.S. Tygert and Penrose Allen about 1889, also operated an office at 2 Chestnut Street. - Advertisement showing an exterior view of the brewery complex operated as Peter Schemm & Son 1887-1908 that was originally built in 1855 and expanded between 1885 and 1887. The depicted red brick buildings include the brew house, storerooms, office building, and carriage house. The roofs are adorned with a cupola, smoke stacks, an American flag, and a weather vane. One building also contains a date marker (1885). Pedestrians, including boys in baseball uniforms and a family, walk in front of the brewery. Workers convene near the entrance and handle horses at and depart with drays and wagons at driveways and cartways of the complex. A laborer pushes a handcart past several large barrels lining the sidewalk near an idle truck and a man on horseback riding in the street. A Schemm delivery wagon loaded with barrels drives past the brewery on Poplar Street across from street cars approaching and departing from the adjacent block, West College Avenue. At the opposite corner, pedestrians walk past a curved brick wall behind which a tree stands and a couple in the street wave to a male passenger at the front of the approaching street car. On the pier, laborers drive loaded and empty horse-drawn carts, unload sand from a barge, operate hoists from within sheds, and work on a raised platform between warehouses marked "Sand." Boatmen and workers operate equipment and perform manual labor on barges and boats, most with visible names, surrounding the pier. Names include Walter C. of Burlington, Sherman, Wilson, Willie Paxson of Philadelphia, Minerva, Samuel Miller, Estelle (built by Pusey & Jones, delivered 1884 to Paxson), and Saml. C. Bougher. - View of the girls boarding school and convent administered by the Society of Sacred Heart Sisters that was built 1849-1850 after the designs of Frank Wills at 4800 Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The stone building contains several wings and a chapel. Crosses adorn the roofs. Girls play on the grounds landscaped with trees. Also shows a woman and child walking up the path to the school entrance and a man with a horse-drawn wagon near the chapel. A border, arched at the top with simple art details, frames the image. The society purchased the Torresdale estate of F. - Copperplate of an advertisement for the firm used in the 1894-1897 editions of Gopsill's Philadelphia City Directory. Contains a view looking southeast of the multi-storied lithographic establishment and vignettes of the front and back of the "Silver Medal" awarded to the business by the Maryland Institute for "Lithographic Work" in 1878. View includes street traffic. Leonhardt & Son was a partnership established circa 1874 between Theodore Leonhardt and his son Arno. - View of the fair buildings and heavily trafficked grounds enclosed by a wood fence. In the foreground, outside of the grounds, pedestrian and street traffic is visible. Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel in the street near pedestrians, including a woman walking her dog on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn omnibuses arrive at and depart from the multiple entrances to the fair at Fifteenth Street near a Philadelphia & Reading Railroad train arriving at the "Special Station." Within the grounds, visitors stroll on the paths between and enter the several exhibition buildings, including the Main Building (center), Restaurant, House of Public Comfort, Carriage and Wagon House, and Poultry House. Agricultural implements, fountains, and shrubbery adorn the grounds. In the background, the cattle sheds, rows of horse stalls, and the Executive Offices line the outskirts of the grounds in back of which trains on the Connecting Railroad and Pennsylvania Rail Railroad tracks travel past. Also shows the entrances, train station, and buildings decorated with flags. - Advertisement calendar for the year 1884 for the firm renamed Geo. S. Harris & Sons in 1876 that contains a large genre scene bordered to the left by pictorial details . The scene, set in a colorfully decorated room, shows a woman lighting the cigar of a man. The woman attired in a dress with a trim decorated in a mosaic flower pattern uses a slip of paper marked "1884" to light the cigar of the man who is attired in dress-tails. Border details include an oriental-style vase of roses atop cloth draped over the calendar, and the lithographer's tradecard. Also includes decorative trim in the upper edge. Harris, first listed as a printer in 1847, operated one of the largest Philadelphia lithographic studios in the later 19th-century. - Sheet music cover containing an exterior view, during the evening, of the temporary main building of the exhibition held under the auspices of the Franklin Institute (September 2 to October 11, 1884) at the 3200 block of Lancaster Avenue. Also shows the adjacent old Pennsylvania Railroad Station used as a display annex. A covered overpass connects the buildings. Light shines through the several windows of the main building adorned with Gothic towers. Visitors walk the grounds of both buildings and horse-drawn buggies and an omnibus travel in the street. Also includes an inset depicting a round electric light bulb.
