Title: Hibernia Fire Engine company, No. 1, of Philadelphia Instituted 1752. Assembling for parade, October 5th 1857
Description: View showing members of the volunteer fire company gathering by their hand-powered Philadelphia-style fire engine (built 1843 by John Agnew) in front of their firehouse (built 1852) on Evelina Street between Second, Third, Walnut and Chestnut streets. The members, including company president Colonel James Page, wear their full regalia of hats, capes, and belts. Many of the men also carry horns and a hatchet. A few spectators informally watch the gathering. Women and couples peer from the windows of a neighboring building and boys sit on the brick wall of the courtyard attached to the fire house. The four-story firehouse is painted with a large "1" on the side and friezes are marked with the institution and incorporation dates, 1752 and 1840, respectively of the company. Also shows the company hose truck on the sidewalk and the station dog lying beside the ornately decorated engine. The engine contains painted details including eagles, angels, harps, and the figure of Liberty. On October 5, 1857, over one hundred regional volunteer fire companies participated in the Firemen's Parade that processed through Philadelphia with John F. Gibson as chief marshal. Title: Riot in Philadelphia July 7, 1844
Description: Discrepant news print showing a battle scene from the second series of anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia in July 1844 that stemmed from the defensive arming of St. Philip de Neri Catholic Church in preparation of a July 4 Nativist party parade. Shows the melee around the city militia under attack from the Protestant rioters depicted as gentlemen in top hats and coats. In the foreground, a rioter picks up a brick as his compatriots fire at a charging band of militiamen near an illuminated lamppost. One soldier lays fallen on the ground as a rioter collapses over him. To the right, a mother flees with her children as men fight hand-to-hand in front of a group of onlookers. The crowd watches another band of militia attempt to guard the targeted Catholic church that is marked "I.H.S. A.D., 1840." In the background, rioters and the militia fire cannons at one another. In actuality, rioters gained control and set the church on fire by the morning of July 7, causing the militia to try and clear a neighboring street on which the combat and cannon fire occurred. Title: The Chinese collection in the lower saloon of the new building at the corner of 9th & George Street, Philadelphia Is now open to visitors every day excepting Sunday from 10 o'clock A.M. to 9 o'clock P.M
Description: Advertisement for Nathan Dunn's Chinese collection housed in the lower floors of the Philadelphia Museum also known as the Chinese Museum that was built 1836-1838. Contains an ornamental border, vignettes, a landscape view, and descriptive text. Border includes filigree and 4 banners adorned with Chinese lettering. Vignettes show a Chinese woman from high society at leisure; a Chinese peasant man, and peasant woman with baby; and a Chinese fisherman on his boat. View shows a Chinese landscape including a pagoda and sailing vessels on the water. Description: Advertisement containing two side-by-side views bordered on top by an ornate floral design. Depicts heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signage advertising "Manufacturers of decorative iron work," "verandahs," and "counters" adorns the building. On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Title: America Fire Engine Co. of the city of Philadelphia
Description: Fire company membership certificate containing two side panel views, vignettes, and firefighting iconography. The left panel shows firefighters running from the fire house on Buttonwood Street, below Third Street. Two men stand lookout on the tower above the house, as others pull the fire engine from the garage. The right panel shows the fire company attempting to extinguish the January 14, 1869 fire caused by an explosion of a steam boiler at the southeast corner of Ninth and Chestnut Streets. Flames shoot from the top of three adjacent businesses on land formerly occupied by the Burd Mansion including, Howell & Brothers, paper hanging (900 Chestnut Street); J.M. Hafleigh, dry goods (902 Chestnut Street); and J.F. & E.B. Orne, carpets & oil cloths (904 Chestnut Street). The center vignette, below the membership text, depicts a man standing in front of the two horses that are hitched to a carriage pulling the fire company's engine. Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. Title: [Dyottville Glass Works]
Description: View showing the Dyottville Glass Works, in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the 50 buildings of the premier glass works, including the factory adorned with the sign "Dyottville Glass Works", farmhouses, and barns. Workers enter the factory and walk on the grounds. Also shows several skiffs docked in front of the complex. The works also had a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles." Title: Conflagration of the steam boat New Jersey on the Delaware River opposite Philada March 15th 1856 in which 60 persons lost their lives
Description: Shows, in the distance, clouds of smoke rising from the Philadelphia and Camden Ferry Co. steamboat under the winter night sky as rowboats race to and from the wreck. In the foreground, two survivors sit and cling to cakes of ice near floating debris. In the right of the image, her sister ferry "Dido" travels to the rescue, the ship's reflection visible in the water. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Title: Church of the Evangelists. Catharine St. west of 7th., Philadelphia
Description: View of the Episcopal church built 1856-1857 at 711-721 Catharine Street. Church property contains side courtyards enclosed by iron gates. Also show partial views of neighboring buildings and street and pedestrian traffic. Traffic includes a horse-drawn carriage, three men conversing on the sidewalk, a man on horseback, and a man walking, a coat over his arm, who is followed by a dog. Congregation formed in 1837 and admitted to the Episcopal church in 1842. The church was the last consecrated by Bishop Potter in the Philadelphia diocese in 1864. The building was razed in 1885, rebuilt in 1886 after the designs of Furness, Evans & Co., and in 1922 incorporated into the Fleisher Art Memorial., Artist possibly French-born lithographer Leonard Crepson (b. 1837)., Philadelphia on Stone, POS 125, Historical Society of Pennsylvania: Bc 132 E 92
