The nine-men crew includes a coxswain and eight oarsmen wearing striped uniforms, the latter holding up their oars. The barge is adorned with an American flag on the bow and the club flag on the stern. Also shows the covered bridge, known as the Upper Ferry Bridge (destroyed by fire in 1838) in the background. The waterworks were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Frederick Graff. Advertisement for the iron foundry established by the Morris family in 1828 at 16th and Market streets. Contains two views above and below the title. Upper view shows the interior of the foundry where in the center a foreman talks with a gentleman, possibly a Morris, surrounded by workers and machinery. In the right, iron workers use a hoist to pour a cauldron of liquid ore into a mold near an open entranceway. In the left, a worker is bent over and using a hammer near humongous cogs and cylinders. Tools including a sledge hammer, pliers, and shovels rest on the floor of the shop and pulleys hang from the ceiling. Lower scene shows a laborer at a large piece of machinery with gears, shafts, piston, and a lever. All the workers wear caps or hats. Israel Morris assumed operations of this foundry in 1848 after I. One woman combs her long, lush, flowing hair with her back to a nightstand with a mirror as she looks at the second woman with short wispy hair. Perfume bottles rest on the night stand. Also contains an ornamental border including columns and advertising text. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair." Surrounding vignettes show sailing vessels, the figure of Justice surrounded by symbols of patriotism and trade, and an allegorical scene with three women posed around an anchor with one, seated, and clinging to the legs of another who stands in a forceful stance. Specimens include female figures and the Traubel imprint. Figures depicted as a romanticized peasant woman, the figure of Justice, and a Native American princess, possibly Columbia. Advertisement showing the two Italianate-style buildings (1101-1103 Frankford, built 1851-1856, and 1045-1055 Frankford, built 1871) in Fishtown of the hosiery manufactory established in 1843. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Pedestrians also fill the sidewalks and street. A boy flies a kite near a gentleman tipping his hat to a woman and child. Laborers transport sacks over their shoulder and by pushing a handcart. A postman is on route to deliver mail across from a man accompanying another using a shoulder strap to carry a basket of rags. A lady peers into one of the several large front windows of Landenberger & Co. Around the corner, two other fashionable women promenade past crates lining the side of the older building. A cupola and an American flag adorn its roof., Around the corner of the newer building inscribed with the date the business was established, a man leads a bridled horse past a wood bin. Landenberger & Co. was the only Philadelphia factory in the late 1850s to produce hosiery, opera hoods, comforters, shawls, and scarves. The factory expanded in 1870 as a result of the massive increase in sales of hosiery and blankets spurred by the Civil War. Landmarks (numbered in the print) include Christ Church, the State House, Presbyterian Church, Dutch Calvinist Church, the Court House, Quaker Meeting House, High Street Wharf, Mulberry, Sassafrass, Vine and Chestnut streets, the drawbridge, and "cornmill" on Windmill Island. Border includes garlands of flowers in which classical female figures, an eagle, and wingless cherubs are intertwined. The female figures are partially clad in Roman garb and one represents a messenger through the embellishments of wings and a trumpet. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." The eagle holds a medallion in his beak. Also contains four images of medals in the corners. Bazin served as the lab director for perfumer Eugene Roussel from circa 1840 to circa 1849 when he assumed proprietorship of the business. Bazin continued to use Roussel's name until circa 1853. Central vignette shows William Penn's Treaty with the Indians, 1682. Advertisement showing the interior of the two-level dry goods store containing a parquet floor and Corinthian columns, and busy with customers at 809-811 Chestnut Street. Men and women patrons mill around and stop at the display counters, one centrally located and the other against the wall. Compartments of textiles line the wall to the right and a women clerk pulls a bolt of cloth as another assists a female customer accompanied by her stylishly dressed daughter. A couple with a child talks with a female clerk at the large C-shaped central counter lined with stools that encloses an island of shelves displaying dry goods. Three men convene near a woman talking to a teller behind a partition to the left. People ascend and descend the semi-circular staircase to the second floor balcony from which bolts of cloth, most with patterns, hang. Disaster scene showing the commotion in front of the partially destroyed stores of John Brock & Co., and Gordon and Berger at 39 (i.e., 100 block) North Water Street. People hold a crowd back as fire fighters attend to the collapsing building spewing a cloud of smoke. A family, including a mother and child, flee past fire fighters rushing to a fallen comrade as debris falls down upon them. Also shows a man kneeling near the Vine Street Wharf as another stands in the center of the view with his arms up in the air. The explosion emanated from a fire started by the friction of a hoisting-machine igniting a large store of gunpowder and saltpeter in the Brock, and Gordon and Berger building. The blaze that spread about one square mile between Front and Callowhill streets destroyed actually about 367 houses and stores. Allegorical genre scene showing an intemperate and temperate family in front of a tree on the banks of the Schuylkill River. In the left of the image, a man dressed in ragged clothing leads his somberly-dressed wife and barefoot sleepy child from a dilapidated tavern down a weed strewn path. At the tavern, men drink, cajole and are passed out on the porch underneath the tavern sign adorned with the image of a pig. Pigs laze and eat from a trough beside the drinking establishment. In the right of the image, a well-dressed couple watches their child pick flowers into a basket as others picnic on the grass in the background. In the distance, the Fairmount Waterworks is visible. Membership certificate containing views and vignettes related to the Pennsylvania Militia. Central view shows troops on display in front of their tents at a militia campground. Men and women spectators watch the troops from near the tent of the commander in the foreground. The commander's tent, flanked by guards on foot and horseback, and four other tents, faces away from the troops who stand in formation. Also includes vignettes above, to the sides, and below the certificate text. Top vignette shows an exterior of the National Guards Hall built 1856-1857 at 518-520 Race Street. Troops form lines in front of the building. Vignette is in an oval frame that is partially covered in laurel, and bordered by cannons, swords, a drum, a spy glass, bayonets draped in cloth and adorned with wreaths, and medals. Side vignettes depict National Guard soldiers on stone pedestals. The militia man on the left wears a winter uniform and backpack, holds a rifle, and stands in front of the American flag. The soldier on the right wears a standard uniform, holds a rifle, and stands in front of the flag of the National Guard.
