Description: Possible proof copy of view looking east showing the Second Bank of the United States, built 1821-1824 after the designs of William Strickland at 420 Chestnut Street. Also shows the neighboring Bank of Philadelphia, completed in 1837, also after the designs of Strickland, at 400-408 Chestnut. Pedestrians traverse the sidewalks in front of the banks and across from the buildings. Couples promenade and greet each other, and patrons ascend the stairs of the U.S. Bank and convene in front of the Philadelphia Bank. Description: Advertisement utilizing classical figures, Gothic-style architectural details, and vignettes to promote the addition of "Chromolithography" to the Ranstead Place lithographic studio tenanted by Duval 1849 -1855. Iconography includes a scene with two male and two female allegorical figures, including one resting on a lyre; a bas-relief depiction of lithographic artists and printers at work at a press, table, and ink stone; and a female classical figure holding a paint brush, and a portrait print of George Washington. Other pictorial elements include portrait profile vignettes, filigree, and floral ornamentation. The floral details surround the several lines of advertising text. Text promotes the "spacious location," "steam power" press, and types of print work executed by the firm. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex between Washington, Federal, Fourth, and Fifth streets for the firm established in 1836 as Merrick & Towne (renamed Merrick & Son in 1849 and Merrick & Sons in 1852). In the right of the image, several laborers remove a pipe through the stable-like doors of a warehouse near which a pile of pipes lies on the sidewalk. A boy, sitting on a hydrant, with a dog watches the scene from the opposite corner. To the rear of the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart filled with coal enters the fenced courtyard. Piles of pipe are visible in the yard and workers are visible at the doorway of the workshop bordering the yard. Past the courtyard, a laborer pushes a hand cart by another workshop. Title: Williams Ogle coach and harness maker, no. 280, Chestnut Street, above 10th.. south side, Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement showing a view of the three-and-a half story factory of the “Ogle’s Coach & Harness Manufactory” on the 1000 block of Chestnut Street. Building adorned with signage, including “Wm. Ogle Coach 280 Maker” signs by the entranceway. A gentleman, probably the proprietor, stands at the open entranceway to the first-floor showroom in which several carriages are displayed. A couple approaches the entrance. Description: View showing the laboratory complex established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). In the foreground, the “No. 40” coal-tender locomotive approaches from one of the series of tracks surrounding and within the factory grounds. Description: View showing the estate of the Philadelphia newspaper proprietor, Andrew McMakin, that was located northwest of Laurel Hill on the Ridge Turnpike at East Falls. Trees partially obscure the main residence that is flanked by outbuildings that were used as an ice-house, bath-house and hot-house. A fountain adorns the lawn on which two deer graze. In the foreground, two men travel on horseback and a third walks with a cane. They pass on the dirt road in front of the stone wall surrounding the property. The estate was originally built for Governor Thomas Mifflin in the 18th century and was later acquired by Fairmount Park. Description: Certificate for the mutual aid association incorporated in 1859 containing seven vignettes showing street cars and street car depots and stations. Two untitled views flank the certificate text. One shows a horse-drawn omnibus traveling during the night by lantern (left) and the other shows a brightly painted and elegantly detailed steam powered street car (right). The steam powered car passes a couple in the doorway of the "Duval" lithography studio. Title: Wakefield – The “Hunt,"
Description: Montage of five scenes from a "Hound and Hare Club of Germantown" meet at Wakefield Meadow, part of the estate of Thomas and Sarah Fisher near Germantown. Large central scene shows elegantly attired men, women, and children, a few astride horses, milling on the grounds near the old residence, pond and creek. Surrounding scenes show horsemen galloping on the grounds, over fences, and in front of distant crowds of on-lookers standing in front of the dwelling. Dwelling built circa 1795. The meet involved horsemen acting as "hounds" and "hares" through horns and pieces of paper. The riders were tracked by their fellow mounted clubmen. Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. In the alley, laborers, some in aprons, transport barrels out off a three-archway storage building, pause near a dray loaded with barrels, and stand by a row of barrels near a doorway of a building opposite the counting house.
