Clippings include newspaper articles about a loan of American political cartoons to the Toledo Museum (1936); exhibitions commemorating the centenary of librettist W.S. Gilbert (1936); the tercentenary of Swedish Settlement (1938); and the library's African American history collection (1971). Columns also describe the presentation of the Christopher Sower library (1909); the return in 1876 of a book 99 years overdue since the American Revolution (1938); the demolition of the Library's Juniper and Locust streets building for a parking lot (1939); and the vandalism of the former Ridgway Building at 901-933 Broad Street (1969). Rau served as the official photographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1891 and the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1895. Rau, a professional Philadelphia photographer, began his career as assistant to Philadelphia photographer William Bell; served as the primary photographer of E.L. Wilson's Middle East photographic expedition (1881-1882); and was sole proprietor of a prolific photographic studio that issued lantern slides, stereographs, and photographs between 1887 and 1920. When folded, a gentleman attired in a suit, top hat, and cane expresses surprise upon viewing what appears to be a nude woman embracing a man. When opened, the trade card reveals that she is attired in a flesh-colored dress and stands on a veranda enjoying a beer with her male companion. Also shows two bottles of "Duesseldorfer" on the the table, a box of beer on the floor, and a servant delivering a silver platter to the couple. Includes a vignette of the company's brewing complex and trademark on verso. The consolidation of the C.F. Schmidt, P. Lieber, and C. Holmes, frequently exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Artist's Fund Society, and was a member of several organizations, including the Numismatic & Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia, Genealogical Society of Philadelphia, and the Library Company. He married Anne C. Contains interior views of Loudoun depicting the parlor and a bedroom. Also includes views of the Stenton grounds showing a wood pile, a hay stack, and rafts of lumber floating down a creek, possibly Wingohocking and portraiture, including an image of the photographer at her camera outside of the Stenton residence. Eskay's food was a modified milk product., Publication date based on copyright statement "copyrighted 1896, S, K, & F. Co. Philadelphia.", Name of artist from several lines of advertising text printed on verso, including two testimonials and premium offer reading, "For three 50-cent wrappers, or their equivalent in value of other sizes, we will send free of all expense a copy of the handsome picture on the other side, in nine colors, size 16 x 25 inches, without any advertising upon it whatever. First card shows a rosy-cheeked, plump baby, attired in a white gown, and seated on a chair. Advertising text below the image reads "'We put baby on a prominent artificial food which constipated him and reduced his weight that we had to abandon it. At two months old he was a mere skeleton. We commenced the use of Eskay's food and you can see that he is the picture of health.' Mrs. G. J. Gesemyer, Phila., Pa." She and Lewis had two children Alberta (1854-1934) and Hermann (b. 1863) and grandchildren Hildegarde Allen (b. 1885), editor and publisher Frederick Lewis Allen (1890-1954), Barbara Lewis [Shepperd] (b. 1885), Margaret Lewis [Browne] (b. 1886), and George Draper Lewis (b. 1888).
