Description: Advertisement calendar for 1867 and 1868 containing a filigree border surrounding a view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith's Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an American flag. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk and stand on the sidewalk. Horse-drawn wagons and drays pass in the street. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith's Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1873. Description: Certificate written in German for the German Order of the Harugari composed of text surrounded by eight allegorical vignettes, symbols of the fraternal order, and filigree and scrollwork. The top vignette depicts a robed, bearded man holding a staff. Other vignettes depict a robed female figure holding a liberty pole; two men with shovels in the woods; a mother and father consoling a young child; a group of men standing near an open grave; a husband and wife standing next to their bedridden child; a man held by soldiers awaiting crucifixion; and a man being arrested. Symbols of the fraternal order include a handshake, a winged hourglass, crossed canes, a skeleton with a scythe, gavels bound with a ribbon, crossed swords, a skull and crossbones, a heart in hand, three crossed arrows, a half moon, a beehive with farm implements and an open Bible. Description: Membership certificate for the Pocahantas Chapter of the Independent Order of Redmen at Philadelphia. Print contains seven small vignettes depicting scenes from the life of Pocahontas, the treaty between William Penn and the American Indians, and other scenes of Native American life. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 15 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and a fair setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight of the nine men are attired in jackets, vests, cravats, top hats and canes. Some wear plaid and striped pants. One man, seated with sheet music in his lap and a stringed instrument by his side, is attired in an elaborate silk robe. The remaining men, most standing, converse in groups and study framed images hanging on the wall. The left image is a landscape, and the right depicts a portrait of an older man. Lower panel shows the New York Crystal Palace, an exhibition building designed by Georg Carstensen and German architect Charles Gildemeister and constructed for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York City in 1853. View includes foot, carriage, and omnibus traffic. Couples, children and dogs stroll the grounds. Description: Advertisement containing an interior view of the shop at 116 Chestnut Street (ie. 320 Chestnut Street) after a daguerreotype depicting a long row of presses lined along the perimeter of the room near tall windows for natural light. Pressmen work on stones propped flat and on an angle. The man at the first press rolls ink onto a stone, as another man, probably an apprentice, carries a stone from the reserve of fresh stones arranged and stacked on the shelves on the opposite wall. Bottles and other supplies line the shelves between each window, and several packaged stones are piled on the floor in the foreground awaiting shipment. View includes a standing press. A foreman, possibly Wagner or McGuigan, attired in a suit observes the printers. Includes views of the recto and verso of the silver medal awarded to Wagner & M'Guigan for "skill and ingenuity" in lithography by the Franklin Institute in 1844 below the image and flanking the advertising text. Title: Whalebone A noted horse for speed & bottom, Brightbay, 15 hands 3 1/2 inches high, has strong points & shews great blodd, was sired by Hamiltonian & Hamiltonian by old Messenger. He was bred by General Coles of Long Island
Description: Racing print showing Whalebone running, mid-galop, during a harness race. The jockey wears a cap tied under his chin and holds a whip in his right hand. Also contains several lines of promotional text describing Whalebone's excellent performances including an 1827 New York trotting course race, which "he accomplished in 54 minutes & 6 seconds with great ease"; his defeat of Creeper, Lady Kate, Grey Squirrel & Moonshine on May 15, 1828 in a Hunting Park Association race worth $200; his victory over Mr. Spicer in another Hunting Park Association course on October 15, 1829, in which he ran 16 miles in 4 mile heats in the unprecedented time of 46 minutes & 11 seconds, and performed the third heat in 11 minutes and 17 seconds; another Hunting Park Association victory on October 23, 1830, winning a purse of $300 for "beating Sir Peter, Jerry, Comet & Top Gallant, and distancing all on the 4th heat"; his defeat of the Calf, Comet and Sir Andrew, winning the 2nd and 3rd heats (the Calf took the first) on the Union Course Long Island on December 6, 1830; his victory over Sweet Brier on the Hunting Park Course, where he won each mile except the 2nd and the 5th; and his performance of 8 minutes 20 seconds in a 2nd 3 mile heat in harness on the Hunting Park course on October 14, 1829.
