Description: Lively view showing several spectators enjoying a match at the grounds of the cricket club (founded in 1854) at 411 West Manheim Street. Elegantly attired young men and women, walk, sit, and stand along the field and in a grandstand. Attire includes hats, bowlers, bustles, canes and parasols. Title: Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., office 2 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. A barge carrying railroad cars is docked in front of a slip labeled "P.R.R. Ferry". Several lines of elevated railroad tracks carrying carts and locomotives run next to the slip and into the distance. Description: Advertisement showing the busy "Pier 45" and factory of the firm at North Delaware Avenue. On the pier, laborers drive loaded and empty horse-drawn carts, unload sand from a barge, operate hoists from within sheds, and work on a raised platform between warehouses marked "Sand." Boatmen and workers operate equipment and perform manual labor on barges and boats, most with visible names, surrounding the pier. Names include Walter C. of Burlington, Sherman, Wilson, Willie Paxson of Philadelphia, Minerva, Samuel Miller, Estelle (built by Pusey & Jones, delivered 1884 to Paxson), and Saml. C. Bougher. In the background, the factory buildings, connected by an overpass, are visible neighbored by the B&O and P.R.R. freight depots, a pier covered in barrels and bales of wood, and other surrounding buildings. Description: View of the girls boarding school and convent administered by the Society of Sacred Heart Sisters that was built 1849-1850 after the designs of Frank Wills at 4800 Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The stone building contains several wings and a chapel. Crosses adorn the roofs. Girls play on the grounds landscaped with trees. Also shows a woman and child walking up the path to the school entrance and a man with a horse-drawn wagon near the chapel. A border, arched at the top with simple art details, frames the image. The society purchased the Torresdale estate of F. Title: Hagar & Campbell's Dime Museum, Ninth & Arch Sts. Opens Monday September 3d 1883
Description: Lively advertising print for the dime museum operated by W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell 1883-1885. Shows throngs of people entering the mansard-roofed building, heavily adorned in signage and over 40 pictures of the museum's performers, at the northwest corner of Ninth and Arch Streets. Signs read "Specially Adapted for Ladies & Children: Open Daily from 1 to 10 P.M."; "Curiosities Constantly Arriving From All Parts of the World"; and "Philadelphia's Pleasure Palace Containing Countless Curiosities / Peerless Parlor Peformances." Other signs announce the hours of operation, the museum's purpose for the "instruction and amusement" of ladies and children, and the admission price - 10 cents. Performer's pictures primarily depict human curiosities and include tattooed men and women, a bearded lady, clowns, a two-headed woman, little people, an armless man, a man eating a slate, exotic and native costumed figures, as well as a magician and a ventriloquist. Graphics also show exotic animals and birds. Building also adorned with flags promoting the museum and its attractions, including "birds, beasts, and mechanical marvels." In the street, three street cars (nos. 44, 33, and 26) and one wagon, advertising Hagar & Campbell's, travel and stop in front of the museum. Wagon is composed of billboards illustrated with an image of seven women with floor-length hair and captioned "Seven Wonders of the World.", Also shows adjacent buildings, a crowd of people at the side of the museum, and pedestrians and passersby in the street, on the sidewalk, and near and looking at the street vehicles. Print also contains portraits of owners W. D. Hagar and W. T. Campbell in the upper corners. By 1884, Campbell and Hagar were officers in the Barnum and London show managing "Privileges." Title: The old Phila. fire department. Period of 1850. The great engine contest on Sunday evening July 7th 1850 at 5th & Market sts
Description: Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Description: Ticket depicting a festive scene for the Philadelphia Carnival Bal Masque organized by the Maennechor Society, the city's German singing society. Scene depicts a man masquerading as a jester in a red costume breaking out of an egg-shaped prop (adorned with the date and location of the event) that lies on the back of a man costumed as a clown. The clown is attired in a white ensemble and is prone, lying on his stomach, and propped up by his hands. The clown wears a pointed hat, ruffled collar, wide-sleeved shirt, and blue-striped pants. Another jester, attired in a red head dress, blue shirt, and tan leggings, stands and watches to the left of the cracking egg from which his fellow jester propels himself. Above the standing jester, a putti pulls up a green drape with gold trim. In the right, in front of the clown and jester in red, a man with long blonde hair and costumed in colonial-era attire bows. He holds a tri-corn hat in his hand and wears a dark-brown coat, blue pantaloons, red shoes, and a flowing gold cape. In the right background, stands a group of male and female spectators costumed as a renaissance man, scullery maid, bald-headed clown, wizard, knight, and Quaker couple. Description: Printer: Thomas Hunter, Philadelphia., Cover illustration is a lithograph of the Centennial Fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex built 1825-1876 between Ninth, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. Buildings house a showroom, storerooms, laboratories, boiler rooms, acid houses, drying rooms, and warehouses. Horse-drawn carts and wagons pick up and make deliveries and travel past the manufactory. In the right of the image, a crossing guard with a signal flag stands at the corner of Ninth and Paris streets. Train cars travel the tracks of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad past a separately-standing warehouse of the factory in the foreground. Opposite the factory and across from the railroad tracks, laborers load a horse-drawn cart with crates and barrels that are lined up in several rows. Also shows pedestrians on the sidewalks, a partial view of a neighboring building, and distant cityscape.
