Description: Advertisement containing a whimsical view surrounded by an ornamental border to promote the music store of Augustus Fiot. View shows cherubs playing and surrounded by instruments, including a cello, harp, trumpet, flute, guitar, and organ. Scene also includes sheet music resting on the floor and propped on a stand. The ornamental border includes a vignette, cherubs playing instruments (harp, cymbals, trumpet, flute), vinery, and floral details. Vignette shows a woman at a piano and a boy playing the flute at a recital in front of a small audience. Fiot began to publish music in 1835 with partner Leopold Meignan. The partnership operated until 1839. Title: An accurate sketch from nature, of the exterior and interior of the house no. 39, Nth. Fourth St. Philadelphia, where the atrocious murder of Mrs. Rademacher was committed on the night of the 23d, March 1848, her wounds, and exact position when discovered
Description: Sensational print containing two views of the murder scene of Catherine Rademacher, sister-in-law of lithographer Augustus Kollner. Her husband, Charles L. Rademacher kept a bookstore and medicinal shop on the first floor of the Fourth Street address, and his residence with the Kollner family on the second and third floors. On March 23, 1848, the Rademachers were awakened by an intruder searching their bedroom who beat Rademacher unconscious and slain his wife. A broken knife, resembling a shoemaker's tool, but not the only instrument used in the slaying, was found at the scene. A recently released inmate from Eastern State Penintentiary and German shoemaker, Charles Langfeldt was convicted, and executed on October 20, 1848 for the crime despite his declaration of innocence. Upper view shows the murderer, dressed in black, including a top hat, on the rear shed roof of the red brick residence and store. He approaches an upper floor window with a shutter half open. The lower windows of the building are shuttered and a partial view of a leafless vine climbing an arbor (neighbor's yard) is visible in the left of the image. Lower view shows the bedroom and scene of the crime. The murdered woman, attired in a night dress, lies on the floor, face up, with blood surrounding her upper body. The victim has cut marks on her face, chest, and arm., Her husband lies face down on the bed. His head is positioned near the foot of the mattress. Blood stains his shoulder and the pillows at the head of the bed. Blood splatter is also visible on the wall above and the knob of a door near a dresser in the left corner of the room. Other furniture includes a chair on one side and a night table with wash bowl and pitcher on the other side of the bed. Description: Tradecard showing the “South Street Grain Distillery,” formerly the Southwark Theatre (closed in 1817) and adjacent “Malt House” on the 400 block of South Street. A fenced courtyard separates the processing plants in front of which horse-drawn carts are lined. The vehicles, attended by drivers, arrive for and receive deliveries. Barrels line the sidewalk in front of the distillery and a laborer is visible at the third-floor receiving entrance of the building. Description: Tradecard showing a view of the glue and animal product manufacturing complex for partners Charles Baeder, Charles Delany, and William Adamson at 1006 North Sixth Street. Complex contains several buildings and two courtyards. The two largest buildings contain several stories, receiving entrances, and cupolas. Laborers holding tools with handles work on the roof of a shed-like building in the center of the complex. Horse-drawn carts are visible in the yard. Also includes street traffic in the foreground. A horse-drawn omnibus, wagon, and men on horseback travel in front of the fenced manufactory. The firm, established in 1828 by Baeder, became the premier manufacturer of its kind in the United States. Description: Advertisement showing the factory complex between Washington, Federal, Fourth, and Fifth streets for the firm established in 1836 as Merrick & Towne (renamed Merrick & Son in 1849 and Merrick & Sons in 1852). In the right of the image, several laborers remove a pipe through the stable-like doors of a warehouse near which a pile of pipes lies on the sidewalk. A boy, sitting on a hydrant, with a dog watches the scene from the opposite corner. To the rear of the warehouse, a horse-drawn cart filled with coal enters the fenced courtyard. Piles of pipe are visible in the yard and workers are visible at the doorway of the workshop bordering the yard. Past the courtyard, a laborer pushes a hand cart by another workshop. Smokestacks adorn most of the buildings and machine parts and tools line the sidewalk in front of them. In the street, a team of six horses pulls a truck carrying a large pipe. Title: Passenger Railroad Relief Association of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate for the mutual aid association incorporated in 1859 containing seven vignettes showing street cars and street car depots and stations. Two untitled views flank the certificate text. One shows a horse-drawn omnibus traveling during the night by lantern (left) and the other shows a brightly painted and elegantly detailed steam powered street car (right). The steam powered car passes a couple in the doorway of the "Duval" lithography studio. Other vignettes show passenger railroad depots at “Race & Vine Sts.”; “Second & Third Sts.”; “Tenth & Eleventh Sts,”; “Ridge Avenue”; and “Fifth & Sixth Sts." Views include omnibuses parked in and arriving and departing from the depots; pedestrian and street traffic, including ladies on promenade, a man herding a flock of sheep, and a horse-drawn carriage; and neighboring buildings. Race Street view also includes a bridge and Fifth Street view includes train traffic in the background. Other incidental figures include a man seated on a chair and conversing on the sidewalk; two men leaning on the fence of a stable yard; and two young men descending a street enbankment. Also includes at the top of the print an eagle holding an American shield in its claws and a banner in its beak. Banner reads “Instituted Nov. 27, 1858. Incorporated March 30th 1859." Twigs covered with vines separate the graphic elements.
