Description: Advertisement showing a montage of vignettes related to lithography to promote partners Thomas Wagner and James M'Guigan, who jointly operated a lithographic studio jointly 1846-1858. Vignettes show the exterior of the printing establishment; lithographic artists working on stones propped flat and on an angle; pressmen operating two different types of lithographic presses (one modified with a cylinder that served as a paper feeding device); and the large steam engine that powered the presses. Also shows symbols of patriotism and the trade propped against the base of the steam engine. Title: Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, supported gratuitously by the citizens of Philadelphia, Pa
Description: Print containing an exterior view and three titled interior views of the saloon and hospital of the volunteer relief agency located near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues. Exterior view shows heavy street activity. A Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad train stops on the grounds in front of a cheering crowd of spectators. Hundreds of soldiers line up to enter and depart the "Hot Coffee and Refreshment" and "Water" stand and "Dining Saloon Free for Volunteers"; officers direct foot traffic onto the train; and other soldiers enter the adjacent "Post Office" and are greeted by women in front of a row of adjoining row homes. Also shows the O.K. House in the background, the fence of "W. Thorn Lehigh & Schuylkill Coal Yard, and an American flag marked "Union for Ever" adorning the saloon. Title: The three days of May 1844. Columbia mourns her citizens slain
Description: Memorial to nativist casualties of the violent clashes occurring between anti-foreigner "Native Americans" and Irish-American Catholics in Kensington, Philadelphia, May 6 through 8, 1844. The female figure of Columbia holds a large, billowing American flag near a broken column on which she places a wreath. On the column are the names of those Native Americans killed during the attacks on Catholic homes and institutions. At the top of the list, circled by Columbia's wreath, is the name of George Schiffler, the first and most famous of the nativist martyrs. Other names inscribed on the column are: Wright, Rhinedollar, Greble, Stillwell, Hammitt, Ramsey, and Cox. To the right of Columbia is an American eagle supporting a shield with the names of the wounded, including: Peale (the artist?), Whitecar, Lescher, Young, Wiseman, Willman, Schufelbaugh, Yocum, Ardis, Boggs, Ford, Bartleson, and Ort. Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Description: View of Girard College at Girard Avenue facing northwest from Corinthian Avenue including Founder’s Hall and the eastern and western outbuildings.
