Description: Life membership certificate containing an exterior view of the YMCA building building erected 1875-1877 after the designs of Addison Hutton at the southeast corner of Fifteenth and Chestnut streets for the branch of the Christian voluntary organization founded in 1854. View contains street and pedestrian traffic. Also contains a border shaped like a frame with ornamented cornices, and banners inscribed with Bible quotations referring to young men, wisdom, and love. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story corner property tenanted by the plumbing and gas fitting establishment of William Wright, John C. Hunter, J.H. McFetrich, and Thomas Brown at 900 Walnut Street. Seventeen bays of windows extend the length of the property on Ninth Street. Two women and a young girl stand in front of an unidentified property adorned by a metal skeleton for an awning (left). One man drives a horse-drawn cart north on Ninth Street, while another unloads goods from a dray. Two gentlemen wearing long coats and top hats stand at the Walnut Street entrance to the plumbing store. One of them grasps the handle of a pump in the doorway. Chandeliers and other wares are visible through the large shop windows. Two white horses are hitched to a closed cab stopped in front of the entrance, and a horse-drawn omnibus is partially visible in the background. Title: Works, East Schuylkill Falls. Powers & Weightman, manufacturing chemists, Philadelphia. Established 1818 Tartaric and citric acid department, Falls of Schuylkill. ; Laboratory for fine chemicals, Ninth and Parrish Streets
Description: View showing the laboratory complex of processing plants and storage sheds established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Men and women converse near the entrance to the complex in the foreground, as a horse-drawn cart exits the compound. In the background, a locomotive travels past the complex (right) and a laborer works with a team of horses that pull several railroad carts loaded with goods (left) on the series of tracks surrounding the complex. View also shows adjacent lots of pasture land. In the lower corners are two vignettes depicting exterior views of the tartaric and citric acid department and the laboratory for fine chemicals at Ninth and Parrish Streets. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United States. A second factory complex operated between 9th, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. Title: Wootten's excelsior stove lustre or pure black lead Prepared by John Wootten, Jr. No. 94 Spruce St. Wholesale Depot, no. 13 North Third Street Phila
Description: Racist advertisement promoting Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre and depicting an African American man, portrayed in caricature, polishing a stove. Shows the African American man servant, barefoot and attired in a plaid, collared shirt and pants, kneeling before a stove with a brush in his left hand. On the floor in front of him is a glass of water, an open can of polish, and a box labeled, Wootten’s Excelsior Stove Lustre or Pure Black Lead. In the right, a white woman stands wearing her brown hair in a bun and attired in an off-the-shoulder dress with a bow at the chest and lace sleeves. She looks toward the man and asks, “Uncle Tom whose blacking is that you are useing [sic].” He replies in the vernacular, “La Missey don’t you know dat -- dat is Wooten's Lustre." Another advantage which this article possesses over all others, is, that it tends to preserve the iron from the deleterious effects of damp and rust, which so often render a stove entirely useless in the course of a few seasons. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Description: Advertisement showing the 4-story building covered in signage for the druggist at 16 North Fifth Street. Signs advertise "Drugs, Paint Oil & Glass. English. French. Description: Advertisement showing the ornately decorated storefront of William H. Horstmann & Sons clothing and military supply store. Patriotic bunting consisting of the names of artists J.H. Otten, carver and J. Gibson, pinxt, and a shield sumounted by an eagle, flags, swords and spears surround a sign that reads, "E Pluribus Unum, Horstmann," above the first level. Drums, military helmets, flags, and swords flank this central display. Laurel wreaths hang above the fasces that form columns on each side of the shop's two doorways and two bay windows. Tassels are visible in the left bay window, while various types of military hemlets are displayed in rows in the right window. Description: Advertisement showing the two-story factory adorned with signage on the 800 block of North Sixth Street near Spring Garden. A boy pulls a carriage out of one of the two entries to the building (Sixth Street) as patrons inspect a different model of coach being pushed out by a factory worker at the other. A family walks between the coaches and other carriages are visible inside. Around the corner (Brown Street), on the sidewalk, two gentlemen converse and a couple peers into a factory window. Near the rear of the factory, a laborer transports a sack on his back near a strolling couple past a hackney displayed on a one-story addition. In the street, a driver tries to reign in his speeding carriage occupied by a couple that is being chased by a barking dog as a boy works on the wheel of a factory carriage nearby. Title: The White Turtle & the Red Crab of Philadelphia
Description: Showing the Northern Liberties Hose Company (White Turtle) and the Lafayette Hose Company (Red Crab) racing to a bonfire near Eastern State Penitentiary on July 25, 1852 during a weekend of fires throughout the city. Men from each company run side-by-side and pull the ropes hooked to their companies' hose carriages. One man from each company stands at the front of their crew and plays a bugle or yells at the team to push forward. Dogs and pigs run beside the companies, flee the scene, and get caught under the wheel of the hose carriage. Includes a view of the buildings along the street, showing people running in the distance and a sign reading "coal." The "winning" Northern Liberties Hose Company (White Turtle) had a fire house at New Market Street above Coates Street, just a few blocks from the "losing" Lafayette Hose Company (Red Crab) at Fourth Street above Brown Street. Description: Proof print of a panoramic view showing the Delaware riverfront near the Walnut Street Wharf. Includes from south to north the merchant house of Samuel and William Welsh (218 S. Del. Ave.), Bloodgood's Hotel (10 Walnut, infamous for the 1855 Jane Johnson fugitive slave case), the wharf, the Cope Line Ticket office (1 Walnut, major passenger service for Irish immigrants operated by the merchants, the Cope Brothers), and Bethel Mariner's Church, i.e., Mariner's Presbyterian Church (organized 1830 on Water St. above Walnut St.). Several vessels, including one at the Walnut Street Wharf and two Liverpool packets of Cope, are docked in the choppy waters of the river. Also shows crates and barrels piled on piers and under shelters at the docks, street activity, and buildings running west on Walnut Street. Also contains several lines of promotional text describing Whalebone's excellent performances including an 1827 New York trotting course race, which "he accomplished in 54 minutes & 6 seconds with great ease"; his defeat of Creeper, Lady Kate, Grey Squirrel & Moonshine on May 15, 1828 in a Hunting Park Association race worth $200; his victory over Mr. Spicer in another Hunting Park Association course on October 15, 1829, in which he ran 16 miles in 4 mile heats in the unprecedented time of 46 minutes & 11 seconds, and performed the third heat in 11 minutes and 17 seconds; another Hunting Park Association victory on October 23, 1830, winning a purse of $300 for "beating Sir Peter, Jerry, Comet & Top Gallant, and distancing all on the 4th heat"; his defeat of the Calf, Comet and Sir Andrew, winning the 2nd and 3rd heats (the Calf took the first) on the Union Course Long Island on December 6, 1830; his victory over Sweet Brier on the Hunting Park Course, where he won each mile except the 2nd and the 5th; and his performance of 8 minutes 20 seconds in a 2nd 3 mile heat in harness on the Hunting Park course on October 14, 1829. Title: Wetherill's white lead, red lead, chemical glass, drug & dye stuff store. Wetherill & Brother, manufacturer of white lead & red lead litharge chrome yellow & green, oil vitrol, copperas, chemicals Sons of and successors to Samuel Wetherill who established the first white lead manufactory in the United States. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront of Wetherwill & Brother (John Price and Dr. William Wetherill) heavily covered in signage on Front Street above Market Street. Signs advertise the "Drug, Paint" & Glass Store," the proprietors - "Druggist & Color Men," and depict the store emblem of an American eagle with a shield atop a barrel, surrounded by apothecary packages, and bordered by the text "Encourage your own Manufactory" and "65 Old Stand." Building also adorned with a railing on the roof. Stacks of barrels, two atop boxes marked "8-10 Glass" and "12-16 Glass," flank the two open entryways (covered in signs) in which the back of a clerk carrying a large box and two male patrons are visible. Decanters fill the display windows, and boxes, barrels, and glassware are stacked near the upper floor windows. A clerk descends into the cellar across from a drayman, in the street, steadying his horse-drawn vehicle loaded with labeled packages. Several more labeled packages line the sidewalk. Materials include opium, linseed oil, shellac, gum opal, sperm oil, myrrh, "dry. w. lead", salad oil, "ol. vit.," "aq. fortis," "bn. indigo," and "ref. camph." Also shows partial views of adjacent businesses, including signs reading "Dru..", "Pai.." and "M..... Whi...", John Price and William Wetherill, were the grandson's of Samuel Wetherill, the founder of the earliest white lead manufactory in America. They assumed management of the business, under the name Wetherill & Brother in 1837 with William handling purchases and John Price superintending the manufacturing branches. Title: Wetherill & Brothers white lead manufactory & chemical works, corner of 12th & Cherry streets, Philadelphia
Description: View predominately showing the yard of the complex built circa 1812-1813 for the earliest American white lead manufactory founded by Samuel Wetherill Jr. in the 1780s. Factory workers labor between a horse-drawn cart, and rows and stacks of crates, barrels, and vats, which cover the yard that is surrounded by buildings. Several smoke stacks adorn the roofs of the shops. Following the circa 1812 fire of the Wetherill white lead manufactory at Broad and Chestnut streets, the new factory was built at the northeast corner of 12th & Cherry streets, including the addition of a chemical manufactory.
