Description: In his memoir, Reminiscences of Philadelphia during the past half century (Philadelphia 1895), J.E. Peyton of Haddonfield, N.J. claims to have lent his name to the recruitment of two cavalry regiments which became the 3rd and 11th Pennsylvania. Taylor associates him with the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry: In the autumn of 1862 an enthusiastic citizen of Haddonfield, N. J., was active in securing recruits for the "Continental Cavalry." Two companies, intended as A and B, were camped at Haddonfield. Adverse circumstances led many of the recruits to leave camp and to enlist elsewhere. Their names were, however, carried upon the company records as "deserters." Those who remained were, with their officers, mustered into the service and attached to the 18th Cavalry."--F.H. Taylor.
