Title: The Magnetic Observatory at the Girard College
Description: Plate illustrating an oblique elevation and floor plan of the Magnetic Observatory building, the first magnetic observatory in the United States, constructed on the west grounds of the college in 1839 after designs by Thomas Ustick Walter. Labels for instruments are included in the floor plan and include a transit; clock; dew point instrument; telescope declinometer; anemometer and rain gauge; barometer; telescope & horizontal force magnetometer; telescope & vertical force megnetometer; and thermometers. The brainchild of Alexander D. Bache, the observatory was moved by master carpenter James O. Title: The state penitentiary, for the eastern district of Pennsylvania This institution known as "Cherry Hill State Prison" at Philadelphia, is the model prison of "The Pennsylvania System of Prison Discipline" or "Separate System" as it is called to distinguish it from "The Congregate." Each convict occupies a single cell or workshop, and is thus separated from all other convicts. The building was begun in 1822. The walls, 30 ft. high, 12 ft. thick at base, 2 ft. 9 in: at top, enclose a square plot of ten acres. There are 7 corridors of cells, capable of receiving 500 convicts. The average number confined annually is less than 300. Some cells are 11ft. 9 in. by 7 ft. 6 in. with yards attached, 15 ft. by 8 ft. Others are double this size, all lighted and warmed and ventilated.-Gas is introduced into the corridors. Heat by hot water thro' pipes. Water in each cell and other conveniences. Shows the prison designed with radial corridors, courtyards, and a Gothic-style entranceway and outer wall. A horse-drawn wagon is visible within, and another, probably a paddy wagon, arrives in front of the prison complex. Men on horseback, possibly guards, accompany the arriving wagon and a few pedestrians walk nearby in the street and on the sidewalk. Cityscape, including Girard College, is visible in the background. Pardoned on August 7, 1849, he was sent to Eastern State again for murder on December 3, 1852. He served nearly eight years and was released on November 3, 1860. Cowperthaite was a weaver in prison. He was described by the prison chaplain as part of the "wowdy clubs of Skinners," with a the prevailing vice of intemperance and with a predominant passion for destructiveness. See N. K. Title: U. S. Mint, Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view showing the second mint building built 1829-1833 after the designs of William Strickland at 1331-1337 Chestnut Street (northwest corner of Juniper and 13th streets). A couple stands between columns on the portico of the Greek-Revival building and another starts to ascend the stairs. The mint operated at the site until it relocated in 1901. Title: U. S. Naval Asylum
Description: View showing the U.S. Naval Asylum, the convalescence home for retired sailors built 1827-1833 after the designs of William Strickland at 2420 Gray’s Ferry Avenue. A small grove of trees adorns the yard in front of the colonnade portico entrance of the three-story building known as Biddle Hall. Title: West Philada. Institute
Description: View showing the proposed building for the mechanic's institute that was erected in 1853 on Williams, i.e. N. 39th, Street above Market Street. In a bucolic setting, two men walk up a path to the small Georgian and Florentine-style two-story building with several windows. The building contained a library, lecture hall, and classrooms for the young men to educate themselves and avoid vice during their free time. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story storefront of Wetherwill & Brother (John Price and Dr. William Wetherill) heavily covered in signage on Front Street above Market Street. Signs advertise the "Drug, Paint" & Glass Store," the proprietors - "Druggist & Color Men," and depict the store emblem of an American eagle with a shield atop a barrel, surrounded by apothecary packages, and bordered by the text "Encourage your own Manufactory" and "65 Old Stand." Building also adorned with a railing on the roof. Stacks of barrels, two atop boxes marked "8-10 Glass" and "12-16 Glass," flank the two open entryways (covered in signs) in which the back of a clerk carrying a large box and two male patrons are visible. Decanters fill the display windows, and boxes, barrels, and glassware are stacked near the upper floor windows. A clerk descends into the cellar across from a drayman, in the street, steadying his horse-drawn vehicle loaded with labeled packages. Several more labeled packages line the sidewalk. Description: Advertisement showing the three-and-one-half story storefront with an open entrance and two large display windows on the 200 block of South Second Street. A clerk attends to a male patron within the store as a man and woman mill around them. Description: Advertisement showing the two-story factory adorned with signage on the 800 block of North Sixth Street near Spring Garden. A boy pulls a carriage out of one of the two entries to the building (Sixth Street) as patrons inspect a different model of coach being pushed out by a factory worker at the other. A family walks between the coaches and other carriages are visible inside. Around the corner (Brown Street), on the sidewalk, two gentlemen converse and a couple peers into a factory window. Near the rear of the factory, a laborer transports a sack on his back near a strolling couple past a hackney displayed on a one-story addition. In the street, a driver tries to reign in his speeding carriage occupied by a couple that is being chased by a barking dog as a boy works on the wheel of a factory carriage nearby. Description: Advertisement showing the ornately decorated storefront of William H. Horstmann & Sons clothing and military supply store. Patriotic bunting consisting of the names of artists J.H. Otten, carver and J. Gibson, pinxt, and a shield sumounted by an eagle, flags, swords and spears surround a sign that reads, "E Pluribus Unum, Horstmann," above the first level. Drums, military helmets, flags, and swords flank this central display. Laurel wreaths hang above the fasces that form columns on each side of the shop's two doorways and two bay windows. Description: Advertisement showing the adjoining four-story storefronts adorned with signage and displayed windows above Market Street on North Fourth Street. At the Womrath & Neville storefront (15), a clerk is visible helping a female patron through the open entry to the building. Shelves of merchandise line the wall behind the employee. Fringes, tassles, a framed graphic, a small broadside, and other trimmings fill the display windows marked "Hosiery," "Trimmings," "Bindings," and "Tapes & Thread." Title: Wood & Perot's ornamental iron works. Philadelphia
Description: Advertisement of two views with heavy street and pedestrian traffic showing the neighboring "Ridge Avenue" factory and the "Twelfth Street" foundry of the iron works. Ridge Avenue view shows the massive "Wood and Perot Ornamental and Iron Railing Factory Iron Works" at 1136 Ridge Avenue. Signs adorn the building advertising "Wood & Perot," Manufacturers of Decorative Iron Work" and "Iron Railings, Verandahs, Balconies, Stairs, Counters &c." On the roof, a large statue of Henry Clay stands, and an American flag flies from a tower. Workers load three horse-drawn wagons stationed in front of the works as pedestrians mill past. Iron railings lean against the building, animal statuary is displayed on the sidewalk, and employees and patrons stand in doorways. In the street, a carriage travels in the direction of a stopped, packed "Ridge Avenue" omnibus receiving and discharging passengers. Description: Advertisement showing the five-story corner property tenanted by the plumbing and gas fitting establishment of William Wright, John C. Hunter, J.H. McFetrich, and Thomas Brown at 900 Walnut Street. Seventeen bays of windows extend the length of the property on Ninth Street. Two women and a young girl stand in front of an unidentified property adorned by a metal skeleton for an awning (left). Description: Advertisement showing a bird's eye view of the chemical works of Harrison Brothers near Fitler and Harrison Streets in Frankford, showing from left to right, the buildings containing "Pyro Acid Works," "Sulphuric Acid Works," "Sugar Lead Works," "White Lead Works," "Alum Works," "Copperas Works," and the company office. The bustling scene includes laborers pushing wheel barrows, putting coal in a furnace, and hoisting barrels using a block and tackle pulley system. Piles of lumber, barrels, and vats cover the ground, and smoke rises from the chimneys of the buildings within the enclosed compound. Title: Conflagration of the steam boat New Jersey on the Delaware River opposite Philada. March 15 1856 in which 50 persons lost their lives
Description: Shows, under the winter night sky, in the distance, clouds of smoke rising from the Philadelphia and Camden Ferry Co. steamboat as rowboats race to the wreck. In the right of the image, a partial view of the ferry "Dido" traveling to the rescue is visible. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control. Description: Advertisement looking east down Chestnut Street showing the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Gentlemen convene near the entranceway and portico of the hotel in front of which a carriage is parked. On the north side of the street, east of the hotel, several individuals, including couples and families, promenade and converse on the several blocks of businesses visible to the riverfront. Opposite the hotel, on the south side of the street, a couple promenades and boys play marbles in front of the former Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) as another couple and several shadowy figures of pedestrians walk down the sidewalks in the background. Description: Advertisement depicting a bird's eye view looking northwest at Robert Buist's enclosed nursery and greenhouses on Twelfth Street, south of Lombard Street. Two long rows of hotbed frames extend west from Twelfth Street and run the length of Rodman Street behind a three-story building marked "140" (a preconsolidation address). Men and women stroll along the central walk that separates the two rows of hotbed frames inside the grounds, accessed from Twelfth Street by the entrance gate adorned with the proprietor's name "R. Buist". Outside of the nursery, several men and women converse on the sidewalk. One of the men holds a driving whip, and is presumably the driver of the stalled horse-drawn carriage in front of the entrance. Description: View showing the premier glass works in Kensington along the bank of the Delaware River, purchased in the late 1810s by English-born boot black maker and patent medicine dealer Thomas Dyott. Shows several of the buildings, including the factory adorned with the sign "T.W. Dyott's Glass Works," at the complex of the works. Smokestacks adorn all the buildings. Also shows a skiff docked near the factory and another sailing on the river. The works also contained a butcher shop, bakery, and chapel. Originally established as the Kensington Glass Works in 1771 by Towars and Leacock, the Dyottville Glass Works manufactured vials, bottles, flask, demijohns, and "indispensable articles." Title: View of the reception of the 29th Regiment, P. V., at Philadelphia
Description: An innovatively designed view of the December 23, 1863 procession of the Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment in honor of their heroic service with the Army of the Potomac. Depicts the procession as a serpentine with the order of procession arranged from top to bottom, with a large eagle, holding an American shield, and patriotic flags by the "Ladies for the 29th" flanked by banners reading "Welcome Home" above the entire view. Soldiers on horseback lead the procession, followed by infantrymen transported in horse-drawn wagons, with one also pulling a cannon, which are followed by a small brass military band. After the musicians, the 29th Regiment marches on foot, some carrying flags, amongst which additional military bands and officers on horse-back also process. Horse-drawn volunteer fire company ambulances carrying soldiers follow the troops, including the vehicles of Northern Liberty Fire Co. no. 1, Vigilant Fire Co., Assistance Fire Co., Weccacoe, Southwark Hose Co., and Hope Hose Company. Along the route men, women, and children watch and join the procession, shake soldier's hands, and cheer. Also shows two boys in a scuffle among the spectators., Buildings line the route, most in shadowy, partial views except the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home at Race and Crown (opened December 1863) and the adjacent buildings near the top of the view. Women crowd the windows of the home and a large American flag marked "Cooper Shop Soldiers Home" stands in front of the building. Also contains the names by Field and Staff Officers, Non-Commissioned Staff, and by Company, of the "Veterans of the 29th," including the African American Company K in addition to the names of the "Board of Managers of the Cooper Shop Soldiers' Home." The procession commenced at about one o'clock from Market Street Bridge down Market Street to Twenty-First Street eventually arriving at the Cooper Shop Soldiers Home where the members of the 29th regiment had dinner before proceeding to the National Guards Hall (518-520 Race Street) to be welcomed by Colonel John Price Wetherill. The order of the procession was as follows the First City Troop; 27th New York Battery; Liberty Coronet Band; Henry Guards; four companies of invalids corps; Provost Guard; discharged members of the regiment; Birgfield's Band; former (Murphy) and present (Rickards) commander of the regiment; Lieut. Col. Zulick of the regiment; the regiment; female family members; First Regiment, Jefferson Coronet Band, Pennsylvania Military Institute cadets, City Council members, and other guards and regiments; and lastly the ambulances of the firemen. Description: Keepsake print containing a rollicking view of members of the volunteer hose company racing their hose carriage around the corner from their firehouse at Tamany (i.e., Buttonwood) Street below York Avenue. Firefighters, most in gear, pull the carriage, run from behind the vehicle, and suit up in the entry to their firehouse. The house contains an iron-work verandah, and a tower from which a volunteer directs the company. Adjacent to the station house at the corner stands "Tamany Hall," an oyster house adorned in signage, including the name of proprietor "Jas. Griffiths" and street signs. The proprietor stands at his doorway, a server watches from outside, and a patron rushes out a rear entry. At the opposite corner, the grocery store of "Tunis O. Bancroft" stands. A female clerk stands in the doorway and merchandise displays, including brooms and buckets, line the storefront. The store owner, attired in an apron and top hat, stands out front, under an awning, and watches the commotion. Another hose carriage, ornately decorated, rests nearby in the street. A small toolbox, bucket, and sponge lie in the street next to the apparatus. View also shows the neighboring residential buildings on the block and around the corner. United States Hose Company was instituted on July 4, 1826 and incorporated on March 13, 1833. Baltimore held a Fireman's Celebration in cooperation with Washington D.C. in November 1851 that was attended by the United States Hose Company. Description: Print containing an exterior view and three titled interior views of the saloon and hospital of the volunteer relief agency located near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues. Exterior view shows heavy street activity. A Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad train stops on the grounds in front of a cheering crowd of spectators. Hundreds of soldiers line up to enter and depart the "Hot Coffee and Refreshment" and "Water" stand and "Dining Saloon Free for Volunteers"; officers direct foot traffic onto the train; and other soldiers enter the adjacent "Post Office" and are greeted by women in front of a row of adjoining row homes. Description: Advertisement showing the four-story, three-bay building tenanted by the china, glass and queensware business of Wm. P. Hacker at 60 (ie. 108) North Second Street. Pitchers, vases and bowls in various shapes and sizes are stacked on shelves lining the walls of the shop interior, and are also displayed in the storefront window, which is flanked by two wide doors on the ground level. In the left doorway, a man lifts a barrel using a pulley system running all the way to the top floor of the building. Another worker loads hampers onto a horse-drawn dray. Barrels and hampers line the sidewalk and cobblestone street in front of the shop. Signboards marked "china, glass" and "queens-ware" cover the front facade of Hacker's shop. Also shows bits of the interior of adjacent properties, including the stairway in 58 North Second Street (left) and casks (presumably of wine) in 62 North Second Street (right). A man and woman stroll by arm in arm on the sidewalk. William P. Hacker moved his business to several nearby properties on North Second Street, starting out at 64, moving to 62 and then inhabiting 60 in 1851.
