Title: Jacob Haehnlen's lithographic & steam powered letter press printing rooms
Description: Proof print of advertisement containing an ornate border surrounding a central view of the exterior of the six-story brownstone and print shop owned by lithographer Haehnlen at 420 Library Street. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith’s Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shop included salesrooms and offices, a machine shop, a drying room, lithographic presses, and card, handbill, and pamphlet printing presses. Border composed of cards containing ornate letters spelling Haehnlen's name and examples of his genres of work, including portraiture, industrial views, and machine imagery. Haehnlen established his own studio at Goldsmith’s Hall in 1866 and operated his business from all but the first floor. He sold his shop to the firm Lehman & Bolton in 1870. Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two paneled scenes of 22 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight men, a woman, and two boys socialize in clusters of three and four. The men and boys predominately wear suits, and the woman wears a ruffled layered dress with full skirt and as well as a bonnet. The other male figures wear a bed jacket and cap (man) and a dress with sash over bloomers (boy). A large vanity and two chairs furnish the room decorated with framed paintings, carpet, drapery, and wallpaper. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene set before an oceanside. Description: Advertisement showing a montage of vignettes related to lithography to promote partners Thomas Wagner and James M'Guigan, who jointly operated a lithographic studio jointly 1846-1858. Vignettes show the exterior of the printing establishment; lithographic artists working on stones propped flat and on an angle; pressmen operating two different types of lithographic presses (one modified with a cylinder that served as a paper feeding device); and the large steam engine that powered the presses. Also shows symbols of patriotism and the trade propped against the base of the steam engine.
