Description: Fashion advertisement containing two paneled scenes of 22 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Eight men, a woman, and two boys socialize in clusters of three and four. The men and boys predominately wear suits, and the woman wears a ruffled layered dress with full skirt and as well as a bonnet. The other male figures wear a bed jacket and cap (man) and a dress with sash over bloomers (boy). A large vanity and two chairs furnish the room decorated with framed paintings, carpet, drapery, and wallpaper. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene set before an oceanside. Eight men, including "His Excellency A. Johnson" and "L. Hyneman Proprietor of Masonic Mirror," two boys, and a woman descend upon and stand on the stone pier. Six of the men wear suits, including overcoats. The two other men wear a riding outfit and a hunting outfit, including a rifle. The boys, one in pantaloons playing with a hoop and the other in pants, also were jackets. The woman wears a riding outfit. Title: Plan of the United States dry dock, at Philadelphia, on the new system of the sectional floating dock, basin, & railways, now constructing by contract with Mess. Dakin & Moody Area available for docking in the plan 350 by 90 feet, 31, 500 square feet. Area available for docking in the U.S. dry dock at Norfolk, 210 by 60 feet, 12, 000 square feet. It will be observed that area available for docking in this dry dock is twice and a half greater than in the U.S. stone dry dock at Norfolk, enabling the former to receive a vessel covering twice and half as much space as the utmost limit of the latter. It will also be observed that the efficiency of the Norfolk dock, is limited to docking one ship of the line at a time, of about 200 feet in length, whereas the new Philadelphia dock, will be able to dock three war steamers of 350 feet in length each, and ten ships of the line all at the same time. The Norfolk dock cost $962, 459 and the cost of one on that plan capable of taking only one vessel 350 by 90 feet, estimated on the same basis would be $2, 406, 147 or about three times the contract price of the Philadelphia dock

Title: View of the launch of the U.S. ship of war Pennsylvania From the Navy Yard at Philadelphia, July 18th 1837
Description: View showing several spectators on vessels in the Delaware River watching the launch of the largest sailing ship built to that date by the U.S. Several tall ships, rowboats, and sailboats filled with spectators congest the river as the ship glides out from its storage house. In the background, cityscape is barely visible behind the several masts of the spectator ships. Pennsylvania, one of nine ships authorized by Congress in April 1816 to carry at least 74 guns, was designed and built 1821-1837 by Samuel Humphreys in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The ship remained in service until 1842 when she became a receiving ship for the Norfolk Navy Yard, where she was burned at the onset of the Civil War. Description: Certificate, containing an allegorical scene, issued in recognition of the military service of Pennsylvania volunteers during the Civil War. Shows the female allegorical figure of Columbia (i.e., United States), her head covered by the American flag, holding laurel wreaths and the Constitution in her outstretched hands, as she stands over a woman huddled on the ground with her children. To the left, a soldier, holding a rifle, stands on his guard, in front of them, while at his feet lay the ruins of a cannon. Title: Scott Legion of the City of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and a scene related to General Winfield Scott and the Mexican American War (1846-1848). Vignettes show a portrait of the older Scott, attired in his uniform, bordered by the American and Pennsylvania flags, the American eagle, and medals. Below, on each side of the portrait, two young members of the Scott Legion, in uniform, stand, with rifles, on pedestals inscribed with the names of Scott's victorious battles during the war. Scene depicts soldiers in battle and charging a fort on a hillside in the presence of the "Scott Legion" monument (located in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.). The monument, visible behind a decorative wrought iron fence, contains an eagle and the seal of Pennsylvania, and was erected in honor of legion members who had died since the war with Mexico. Also includes greenery native to Mexico, including plam trees and cactus. Title: Independence Hall. Philadelphia 1876
Description: Busy street view showing Independence Hall during the year of the Centennial Exhibition, a celebration through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art for the centennial of the United States. Independence Hall was built 1732-1748 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley at 520 Chestnut Street. Also shows the old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans (500 Chestnut); Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut); and the Public Ledger Building built 1866-1867 (600-606 Chestnut). Title: The horrible murder of the Dearing Family The above picture is a correct representation of the interior of the the barn and appearance of the murdered family as sketched by the artist shortly after the discovery of the murder, the murderer is in the act of dragging the bodies of Mrs. Dearing and the children into the adjoining corn crib, seen through the window to the right of the picture. Names of the murdered family: Christopher Dearing, aged 38 years; his wife, Julia Dearing, aged 45 years; their son, John Dearing, aged 8 years; their son, Thomas Dearing, aged 6 years; their daughter, Anna Dearing, aged 4 years; their daughter, Emily Dearing, aged 2 years; his niece [sic], Elizabeth Dolan, aged 25 years; and Cornelius Cary, aged 17 years
Description: News print showing the Philadelphia family murdered by their farmhand Anton Probst at their farm at Jones Lane in South Philadelphia on April 7, 1866. Probst, his face partially covered by the wall above the passageway, drags the body of one of the boys through it to the crib. The goateed murderer drags the boy by his feet, face up, from the pile of corpses laying on the hay covered floor. To the left of the image, Mrs. Dearing lays face down and covered by the bodies of her older children, who lay face up and with slit throats. Her hand is outstretched and resting on the baby, whose throat is also slit. To the right, in front of a barrel below a window, Mr. Dearing lays face up, a slit in his throat, his face covered by hay, and next to family friend Miss Dolan. She lays face down, her arms outstretched and her cross visible from beneath her body. Also shows, a pitchfork and ax propped against the wall in the background across from an opening to another section of the barn where cows stand in stalls. The murdered farmhand, Cary, is not depicted. Probst, a German immigrant and swindler, was a disgruntled former farmhand of the Dearings who murdered the family by hammer and ax for revenge and money. Description: Advertisement showing the interior of the two-level dry goods store containing a parquet floor and Corinthian columns, and busy with customers at 809-811 Chestnut Street. Men and women patrons mill around and stop at the display counters, one centrally located and the other against the wall. Compartments of textiles line the wall to the right and a women clerk pulls a bolt of cloth as another assists a female customer accompanied by her stylishly dressed daughter. A couple with a child talks with a female clerk at the large C-shaped central counter lined with stools that encloses an island of shelves displaying dry goods. Three men convene near a woman talking to a teller behind a partition to the left. People ascend and descend the semi-circular staircase to the second floor balcony from which bolts of cloth, most with patterns, hang. Title: Martin Landenberger & Co Manufacturers of shawls - fancy knit goods - hosiery. Frankford Road & Wildey St. Philadelphia Pa
Description: Advertisement showing the two Italianate-style buildings (1101-1103 Frankford, built 1851-1856, and 1045-1055 Frankford, built 1871) in Fishtown of the hosiery manufactory established in 1843. A covered pedestrian bridge marked with the name of the company connects the buildings that are surrounded by heavy street activity. Horse-drawn wagons, drays, and carts, including vehicles for L. Berges Dyeing & Printing and F. Schoettles Paper Box company, deliver and transport goods and merchandise among a couple on horsebacks, a carriage, buggy, and a "Bridesburg Richmond 1 Exchange" streetcar. Pedestrians also fill the sidewalks and street. A boy flies a kite near a gentleman tipping his hat to a woman and child. Laborers transport sacks over their shoulder and by pushing a handcart. A postman is on route to deliver mail across from a man accompanying another using a shoulder strap to carry a basket of rags. A lady peers into one of the several large front windows of Landenberger & Co. Around the corner, two other fashionable women promenade past crates lining the side of the older building. A cupola and an American flag adorn its roof., Around the corner of the newer building inscribed with the date the business was established, a man leads a bridled horse past a wood bin. Birds fly above the building adorned with a weather vane decorated with a sheep. Also contains two vignettes of the company seal printed below the image. Seal includes a crown and two eagles. Landenberger & Co. was the only Philadelphia factory in the late 1850s to produce hosiery, opera hoods, comforters, shawls, and scarves. The factory expanded in 1870 as a result of the massive increase in sales of hosiery and blankets spurred by the Civil War.
