Description: Advertisement for the resort area operated by Caspar Boenning at the Delaware River Island containing a "General View of Smith's Island (Fare 6 Cts To Go & Return)" surrounded by 8 scenes showing island amusements and entertainments. Central view depicts a sailboat passing two ferries of people approaching the pier adorned with a tall flagpole and signage for "C. Boenning Baths." Individuals walk on the pier and paths on the island near resort and residential buildings, including the residence of Robert W. Smith. A ferry boat travels through the channel in the right of the image. Upper surrounding vignettes include 3 titled scenes "Residence of Thomas G. Smith," "Swimming & Shower Bath," and "Residence of Robert W. Smith." Shows visitors strolling the building and grounds of the residences. Title: Scott Legion of the City of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and a scene related to General Winfield Scott and the Mexican American War (1846-1848). Vignettes show a portrait of the older Scott, attired in his uniform, bordered by the American and Pennsylvania flags, the American eagle, and medals. Below, on each side of the portrait, two young members of the Scott Legion, in uniform, stand, with rifles, on pedestals inscribed with the names of Scott's victorious battles during the war. Scene depicts soldiers in battle and charging a fort on a hillside in the presence of the "Scott Legion" monument (located in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.). The monument, visible behind a decorative wrought iron fence, contains an eagle and the seal of Pennsylvania, and was erected in honor of legion members who had died since the war with Mexico. Description: Advertisement containing advertising text surrounded by an ornate flowery border. Border includes garlands of flowers in which classical female figures, an eagle, and wingless cherubs are intertwined. The female figures are partially clad in Roman garb and one represents a messenger through the embellishments of wings and a trumpet. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." Title: Riot in Philadelphia July 7, 1844
Description: Discrepant news print showing a battle scene from the second series of anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia in July 1844 that stemmed from the defensive arming of St. Philip de Neri Catholic Church in preparation of a July 4 Nativist party parade. Shows the melee around the city militia under attack from the Protestant rioters depicted as gentlemen in top hats and coats. In the foreground, a rioter picks up a brick as his compatriots fire at a charging band of militiamen near an illuminated lamppost. One soldier lays fallen on the ground as a rioter collapses over him. To the right, a mother flees with her children as men fight hand-to-hand in front of a group of onlookers. The crowd watches another band of militia attempt to guard the targeted Catholic church that is marked "I.H.S. A.D., 1840." In the background, rioters and the militia fire cannons at one another. In actuality, rioters gained control and set the church on fire by the morning of July 7, causing the militia to try and clear a neighboring street on which the combat and cannon fire occurred. Description: Advertisement for the shipping company established by John Dougherty as Reliance Transportation Company circa 1835. Company operated on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of inclined planes opened in 1834 that transported canal boats, box cars, and carriages by horse and steam engine to connect the east and west branches of the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. Contains two views of canal boats on trucks being transported on the railroad by locomotive. Title: Plan of the United States dry dock, at Philadelphia, on the new system of the sectional floating dock, basin, & railways, now constructing by contract with Mess. Dakin & Moody Area available for docking in the plan 350 by 90 feet, 31, 500 square feet. Area available for docking in the U.S. dry dock at Norfolk, 210 by 60 feet, 12, 000 square feet. It will be observed that area available for docking in this dry dock is twice and a half greater than in the U.S. stone dry dock at Norfolk, enabling the former to receive a vessel covering twice and half as much space as the utmost limit of the latter. It will also be observed that the efficiency of the Norfolk dock, is limited to docking one ship of the line at a time, of about 200 feet in length, whereas the new Philadelphia dock, will be able to dock three war steamers of 350 feet in length each, and ten ships of the line all at the same time. The Norfolk dock cost $962, 459 and the cost of one on that plan capable of taking only one vessel 350 by 90 feet, estimated on the same basis would be $2, 406, 147 or about three times the contract price of the Philadelphia dock

Description: Bird's eye view after the John Bachmann print published by J. Weik in 1857. Predominately shows the built city from the Schuylkill to the Delaware rivers and Port Richmond to South Philadelphia. Market Street runs down the center of the view. Shows the residential, commercial, industrial, religious, educational, and cultural buildings lining the streets and outer lying areas of Center City. Also shows parts of West Philadelphia, Windmill Island, and Camden, NJ. and public utilities, bridges, railroad depots, and reservoirs. Includes from west to east, grounds for the Agricultural Society Fair of 1856, the Woodlands, Blockley Almshouse, the Upper Ferry Bridge, Market Street Bridge, the two Gas Works, Fairmount Water Works, Girard College, Eastern State Penitentiary, the Naval Asylum, Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, St. Mark's Church, Christ Church, Independence Hall, Pennsylvania Hospital, St. Peter's Church, and Spark's Shot Tower. Also shows the five major squares (as well as Independence Square) and adjacent landmarks, including the P.R.R. Freight Depot, U.S. Mint, First Independent Church, Pennsylvania Asylum for the Blind, and Will's Eye Hospital. Masts of docked ships line the piers along the Delaware and vessels sail on the waters of both rivers. Pedestrian and street traffic is also visible on the city road ways. Title: Philadelphia Zouave Corps Pennsylvania Volunteers
Description: Shows the troops of the 114th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, led by four drummers and four buglers marching past the old City Hall, Independence Hall, and Congress Hall on the 500 block of Chestnut Street. The commanders, wearing caps, long jackets, and pants, march in front and beside the men attired in their turbans, cropped jackets, and baggy pantaloons. Several spectators, including a girl hold a pail next to a man in an apron, line the street. Title: Philadelphia taste displayed. Or, bon-ton below stairs
Description: Satiric scene showing high society, i.e., "bon-ton" in a Philadelphia oyster cellar. A "gentleman" descends the stairwell to the swankly decorated cellar where a motley gathering of men drink, smoke, gossip, and suck oysters. An African American bartender serves drinks from decanters in the left of the image. The bar is adorned with a notice reading "City Privilege still without license." Another African American attends the oyster bar. Plates, crackers, salt, and vinegars line the edge. In the right of the image, a sick-faced patron wobbles and spills his drink next to a tall clock with a decorated face and the inscription "Music has charms."
