Description: Advertisement containing a central interior view of the bustling manufactory bordered by several captioned vignettes of men and women at specific tasks, and the mechanisms used, in the manufacture of blank books. Central view depicts several woman at work seated at two tables in the center of the room surrounded by men at work stations lining the space lighted by windows in the right and rear of the area. Piles of pages of books rest in front of the workers. In the foreground, women sew as at the front end of the table as ladies at the rear toil at folding pages. At the work stations, rows of men work at finishing pages. In the background, men operate book presses and other machinery, and transport reams of papers near women folding pages below a loft. On the upper floor, men work at stations across from shelves of reams of paper as a boy carries a mound of book pages down the stairs to the lower floor. Description: View of Girard College at Girard Avenue facing northwest from Corinthian Avenue including Founder’s Hall and the eastern and western outbuildings. Title: The three days of May 1844. Columbia mourns her citizens slain
Description: Memorial to nativist casualties of the violent clashes occurring between anti-foreigner "Native Americans" and Irish-American Catholics in Kensington, Philadelphia, May 6 through 8, 1844. The female figure of Columbia holds a large, billowing American flag near a broken column on which she places a wreath. On the column are the names of those Native Americans killed during the attacks on Catholic homes and institutions. At the top of the list, circled by Columbia's wreath, is the name of George Schiffler, the first and most famous of the nativist martyrs. Other names inscribed on the column are: Wright, Rhinedollar, Greble, Stillwell, Hammitt, Ramsey, and Cox. To the right of Columbia is an American eagle supporting a shield with the names of the wounded, including: Peale (the artist?), Whitecar, Lescher, Young, Wiseman, Willman, Schufelbaugh, Yocum, Ardis, Boggs, Ford, Bartleson, and Ort. Description: Artist's study drawing for ca. 1833 lithograph by Charles Fenderich depicting the Merchant's Exchange. View looks northeast from the intersection of Dock, Third, and Walnut streets. Shows the building adorned by a figure holding a two-pronged spear, possibly Hades, the god of wealth. Also contains partial view of Girard Bank (116-120 S. Third) in the background. Exchange built 1832-1833 after the designs of William Strickland. The Girard National Bank, formerly the First Bank of the United States, was built 1795-1797 after the designs of Samuel Blodgett.
