Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Outside the complex, a driver handles a four-horse team plodding to pull a truck loaded with two large machines as other factory workers transport planks, carry crates, mill about with their tools, drive a dray, and stand at a shed facing the street. Exterior view of the First Independent Church, later renamed Chambers Presbyterian Church, built 1831 at the northeast corner of Broad and Sansom streets. Also shows a partial view of an adjacent building and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians include a couple with a child and two men greeting one another. Also contains amateur ink-drawn and hand-colored modifications. Retouches show fire hoses in front of the buildings leading to firefighters using a hand-pumper to fight a blaze in the background. Some pedestrian figures also altered with firefigher hats and capes. The church, altered in 1853 to include a front portico, housed the independent congregation of Rev. John Chambers. Unlettered proof of advertisement showing a North Third Street block of businesses (37-43) above Market Street. Includes (left to right) Sieger, Lamb & Co., dry goods (43); Brown, Frederick & Kunkel, men's and boys' wear and Irwin, Shultz & Peiper, merchants (41); S. Brock Jr., fancy dry goods and Iungerich & Smith, grocers (39); and Lloyd & Walmsley, trimmings (37). Storefronts are four to five stories and are built of stone. Gentlemen patrons enter and exit, including one descending an interior flight of stairs, most of the establishments. A crate rests outside and boxes are piled near the second-floor windows of Brown, Frederick, & Kunkel. Barrels crowd the first floor of Iungerich & Smith into which a laborer rolls a barrel as two line the sidewalk behind him. Outside of Lloyd & Walmsley, a gentleman inspects a large box and men sit on or address crates in front of Sieger, Lamb & Co. Religious view showing a backwoods revivalist meeting, probably near Philadelphia. On a rickety covered wood stage used as an altar, a minister enthusiastically preaches, his hands in the air, to a crowd of followers. Four men, two distracted by a nearby horn blower, sit on a bench, on the stage, behind the preacher. The followers, predominately women, kneel, dance, stand, and raise their hands with the spirit in an opening between benches. Others, including an older woman and a mother with child, remain seated on the benches as one man holds a fainting woman and another with a euphoric look leans on a tree. Onlookers, many elegantly-dressed, surround the camp meeting attendees. A few look with repugnance and point while others converse in seeming obliviousness. Also shows, in the foreground, three dogs, two wearing collars. One sniffs another's face in greeting. In the distant background, among clearings in trees, the tents and wagons of the attendees are visible. Print commemorating the 100th anniversary of the nation, celebrated at the Centennial Exhibition through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art in Philadelphia. Contains the text of the Declaration of Independence and the Proclamation Emancipation bordered by several historical and allegorical vignettes, scenes, and views that symbolize the social, political, and technological progress of the country. Oval frames surround the texts, which encircle bust-length portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The frames are adorned with banners labeled with the names of the original 13 colonies and the 38 states recognized as of 1876. Two bird's eye views showing the development of a cityscape, possibly New York City, from 1776 to 1876 are visible between the framed texts. In tribute to the upcoming Centennial Exhibition, vignettes at top depict Carpenters' Hall, Independence Hall, and a buffalo hunt. Building views inlcude pedestrian traffic. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. Exterior view of the front facade and flank of the Ninth Presbyterian Church showing well-dressed men, women and children entering the left and right entrances. The church, adorned with Gothic arched windows and details, was built circa 1815 on North Thirteenth Street with funds donated by Margaret Duncan to serve the poor and working class of Philadelphia. Originally named the Second Associate Reformed Church, the church was also commonly known as Margaret Duncan's Church or the Vow Church. Controversy over John Chambers appointment as a new minister of the church in the mid 1820s influenced his decision to form a new congregation with his supporters in 1830. They moved to the much larger First Independent Church at Broad and Sansom Streets. Floor plan of the Protestant Episcopal church built 1856-1859 after the designs of John Notman at 200 South 19th Street. Includes the chancel; vestibules; towers; the center, South, and North galleries of pews; and a porch. Pews are printed with a row number, "value," "seats," and "rent." Values range from $1200 to $200 and pews 146 and 147 are annotated in ink: "3 for rent" and "1 for rent." In March 1859, an auction administered by M. Thomas & Sons was arranged by the vestry to raise funds to complete the construction of the church, particularly a steeple. A passenger train of the Philadelphia, Germantown, and Norrristown (later Philadelphia & Reading) Railroad passes in the foreground and a boat is moored on the river bank. The institute was established in 1845. This view issued shortly before the building underwent major renovation and enlargement 1852-1855.
