Title: [Garsed & Brother Wingohocking Mills billhead]
Description: Billhead for R. Garsed & Brother containing a view of the firm's textile mills built 1853 on the northwest corner of Ashland Street along Frankford Creek in Frankford. The mills include a small office building adjacent to a long single-story building with three portico entrances, a smokestack, and cupola adorned with a weather vane. The main building housed the spinning, carding, warping, and spreading rooms. Women stand in two of the portico entries, individuals walk on the grounds, and a “Wingohocking” horse-drawn wagon travels past the mill. In the foreground, by the creek, a horse and colt stand near a canoe marked "Wingohocking Mills" moored at the bank. Title: Brandywine Springs Hotel near Wilmington Del
Description: View showing the elegant four-story hotel completed in 1826 after the designs of Thomas U. Walter in Brandywine Springs, Delaware. Title: Wakefield – The “Hunt,"
Description: Montage of five scenes from a "Hound and Hare Club of Germantown" meet at Wakefield Meadow, part of the estate of Thomas and Sarah Fisher near Germantown. Large central scene shows elegantly attired men, women, and children, a few astride horses, milling on the grounds near the old residence, pond and creek. Surrounding scenes show horsemen galloping on the grounds, over fences, and in front of distant crowds of on-lookers standing in front of the dwelling. Dwelling built circa 1795. The meet involved horsemen acting as "hounds" and "hares" through horns and pieces of paper. The riders were tracked by their fellow mounted clubmen. Title: Penn sylvania State Agricultural Society [diploma]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and graphic elements related to agriculture. Vignettes at the bottom of the print show clusters of farm animals, including cows, pigs, and fowl; a man providing a bowl of feed to a couple of horses with a foul in a fenced pasture in front of a house; and a farmer plowing his field. Graphic elements in the upper corners include farm implements, tools, and equipment, including shovels, pitchforks, sickles, rakes, and a grinding implement. Title: Wm C. Rudman’s Philadelphia pale ale on draught, warranted for from all pernicious drugs and alcoholic admixture, Brewery, 121 Green Street, Northern Liberties
Description: Advertisement looking down the alley way of the brewery, also known as Eagle Brewery, established in 1829. Includes the "Pale Ale Brewery Counting House" (left) and adjoining and adjacent processing buildings. In the foreground, within the doorway of the red brick counting house, a clerk interacts with a drayman. The brewery employee hands the driver a small piece of paper as the deliveryman also holds the reigns of his horse harnessed to a dray loaded with beer barrels. The horse wears blinders. Behind the clerk, a gentleman holding a mug of beer stands with another man in the doorway. In the alley, laborers, some in aprons, transport barrels out off a three-archway storage building, pause near a dray loaded with barrels, and stand by a row of barrels near a doorway of a building opposite the counting house. Title: Passenger Railroad Relief Association of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate for the mutual aid association incorporated in 1859 containing seven vignettes showing street cars and street car depots and stations. Two untitled views flank the certificate text. One shows a horse-drawn omnibus traveling during the night by lantern (left) and the other shows a brightly painted and elegantly detailed steam powered street car (right). The steam powered car passes a couple in the doorway of the "Duval" lithography studio. Other vignettes show passenger railroad depots at “Race & Vine Sts.”; “Second & Third Sts.”; “Tenth & Eleventh Sts,”; “Ridge Avenue”; and “Fifth & Sixth Sts." Views include omnibuses parked in and arriving and departing from the depots; pedestrian and street traffic, including ladies on promenade, a man herding a flock of sheep, and a horse-drawn carriage; and neighboring buildings. Race Street view also includes a bridge and Fifth Street view includes train traffic in the background. Description: Advertisement using trompe l'oeil to depict a genre scene set in a cobbler shop as an illustrated poster with a curling edge. Shows a mother with her two sons (attired in dresses) patronizing the shop. The cobbler, at his work table, holds up a 'Solar Tip" shoe to the child showing his toe-worn shoe and offers the advice "Buy the Genuine Solar Tip. Then your shoes won't need mending." The mother holds the hands of the boy who has lifted his foot, his toe poking from the worn shoe, at which a cat, with a ribbon collar, swats his paw. The cat stands by the cobbler's feet and near boots soaking in a bucket.
