They manufacture high and low pressure steam engines, stationary and for boats, sugar mills, sugar pans, hydraulic presses, pumps and machinery for mines, blowing cylinders for furnaces, and iron and brass castings of every description and weight, and have provided on the Delaware below the Reading Rail Road Depot, a commodious shop and wharf, with a crane, expressly for the construction and repair of steam boat engines & boilers
Description: Advertisement for the iron foundry established by the Morris family in 1828 at 16th and Market streets. Contains two views above and below the title. Upper view shows the interior of the foundry where in the center a foreman talks with a gentleman, possibly a Morris, surrounded by workers and machinery. In the right, iron workers use a hoist to pour a cauldron of liquid ore into a mold near an open entranceway. In the left, a worker is bent over and using a hammer near humongous cogs and cylinders. Tools including a sledge hammer, pliers, and shovels rest on the floor of the shop and pulleys hang from the ceiling. Lower scene shows a laborer at a large piece of machinery with gears, shafts, piston, and a lever. All the workers wear caps or hats. Israel Morris assumed operations of this foundry in 1848 after I. Description: Advertisement with heavy street activity showing the Harrison & Newhall Refinery, formerly the Penington Sugar Refinery. Refinery reestablished and expanded as the Harrison & Newhall Refinery circa 1855 at 409 Race Street. In front of the refinery, laborers load horse-drawn drays with barrels as another man in an apron leads another dray past the fenced northwest corner of Race and Crown streets (former residence of Edward Penington). At that corner, a man leans on a street lamp across from a man on horseback in the street and two street urchins on the sidewalk eyeing a well-dressed couple. At the other end of the street, a traffic jam occurs as the barrels on the dray of a rambunctious horse roll off the vehicle in front of a horse-drawn cart and omnibus. A horse-handler and displaced carriage driver discuss the accident in the street as a peddler, the possible cause of the commotion, nonchalantly carries a tray of wares on his head past the scene. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Cylinders, shafts, and wheels lay on the sidewalk in front of the building. Workers are visible at many of the numerous entranceways, hoisting, talking with company officers, and spotting machinery. Description: Advertisement for Daniel Mershon's Sons heating and ventilating warehouse at 1203 Filbert Street. Shows busy street and pedestrian traffic in front of the four-story red brick warehouse heavily adorned with signage and a "Russian Heater Works" flag at the northwest corner of Twelfth and Filbert streets. Signs advertising patent airtight heaters, grates, registers, ventilators, fireplace heaters, ranges, slate mantels, and house warming and cooking ranges are visible near the doorway and in the show windows of the storefront. Stoves, ranges, and fireplaces are displayed in the windows and on the sidewalk. Description: Advertisement after a circa 1858 oil painting "Magarge Paper Mill" by William E. Winner showing the expanded paper mill originally built for William Dewees in 1731 at the foot of Wise's Mill Road on the bucolic Wissahickon Creek. Mill includes the main building, boiler house, machine room, and chimney. Mill was rented by Charles Magarge (President of Bank of Germantown) in 1844 and purchased by him in 1853 and thereafter expanded to house a Fourdrinier Paper machine. It was the first mill to use wood pulp to make paper. Description: Advertisement with much street activity showing the manufactory and warerooms operated 1856-1878 by Hess at 1434 Coates Street. At the "Penn Steam Marble Mantel Manufactory," a horse-drawn dray hauling a slab of marble marked "Eli Hess" enters the fenced yard lined with stones. Workers using upright sawing machines cuts slabs of marble within the workshop of the factory that is adorned with statuary on its roof. Patrons enter the adjacent three-story warerooms. Evergreen trees protected by iron-work fencing are visible near the entrance. Statuary in recesses, window shades marked with the business name, and a figure of William Penn mounted on the roof adorn the building. Title: Reliance Portable Boat Company's line of portable iron boats for the transportation of goods between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
Description: Advertisement for the shipping company established by John Dougherty as Reliance Transportation Company circa 1835. Company operated on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of inclined planes opened in 1834 that transported canal boats, box cars, and carriages by horse and steam engine to connect the east and west branches of the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. Contains two views of canal boats on trucks being transported on the railroad by locomotive. Upper image depicts a bird's eye view of a locomotive that is hauling boat sections approaching an incline to the canal. A long canal boat traverses the waterway. In the background, a farm and farmland are visible on the numerous hillsides. Title: Humboldt Monument in Fairmount Park, designed by Collins & Autenrieth, for the Humboldt Festival Committee
Description: View showing a rendering of the monument, surrounded by trees and bushes, to be erected in honor of German natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt in East Fairmount Park. Monument composed of a bust of Humboldt resting on a column pedestal adorned with lion-mouthed fountains and two cherubs holding a globe marked "Cosmos" (representing Humboldt's 5-volume work about his knowledge of the earth). A stone canopy with benches protects the monument under and near which a lady and two gentlemen stand. Also shows a short level of stairs leading to the monument. Description: Certificate containing a scene showing three junior artillerists in uniform and armed with bayonets at a cannon in a field. Two of the militia men lean on the cannon as the third sits on a log in front of them. In the background, tents at the militia campsite are visible and a militia man walks past a stack of barrels. Junior Artillerists formed from the "Young Men's Democratic Society" in 1813 during the War of 1812 and helped to occupy Fort Mifflin. Geyer, was possibly Philadelphia leather dealer William B.
