Description
Busy view showing the early 1780s former residence of miniature painter and steamboat engineer Robert Fulton when tenanted by a lager beer saloon. Depicts two saloon workers moving barrels across from two men conversing near the entryway of the two-story, wooden building with display window and awning. One worker emerges with a barrel from the cellar in front of the window while the other rolls one of four barrels in his direction and away from a tilted telegraph pole. The pole extends up through the awning and leans into the roof of the adjoining building in the left. “Restaurant” is written on the display window and "Lager Beer Saloon" is written on the awning. A fire insurance marker and signage reading “121 Fulton House” and “ale” also adorn the building. Also shows partial views of adjacent brick buildings, and in the left, a woman attired in a hat, dress, and apron walking on the sidewalk and carrying a ceramic carafe. Building in right, likely a grocery store, is adorned with an awning frame on which a small round sign reading “L” hangs. Building is also adorned with signage that is partially visible and reads "Groc" and "Joh." Fulton lived and worked on South Second Street in the early 1780s. While in Philadelphia, he worked as an apprentice and miniature painter as well as began his experiments with the mechanics of steam power. In 1786 he relocated to Front Street. About 1787 he moved to London and studied painting with American-born artist Benjamin West., Artist and title from manuscript note on oil painting depicting similar scene and given in 1863 to Ferdinand Dreer by James L. Arthur Power Dudden collection of railroad, steamboat, and omnibus passes, 1865-1876
Description
The collection consists of forty-two transportation passes, one telegraph pass, two membership cards, a business card, and two calling cards (Edward Hoopes, Philadelphia; and J. Knight). The passes were all issued to members of the Charles J. Clarke family and date from 1865 to 1876. Clarke was the principal of Clarke and Company, an agency that facilitated transfer of freight between lines. He is probably most remembered for being a founding member of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, owners of the dam that failed in 1889, causing the Johnstown Flood., Collected by Arthur Power Dudden, professor of history and American studies at Bryn Mawr College. Dudden was born on Oct. 26, 1921. He graduated with a B.A. from Wayne State University in 1942, then served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Michigan, obtaining a Ph.D. in history in 1950. He joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College that same year, and became a full professor in 1965. He retired from Bryn Mawr in 1992. Dudden authored 9 books, and was actively involved in several professional associations. He died on Oct. 14, 2009.

World War One, memorial in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia
Description
Shows the memorial, sculpted by J. Otto Schweizer and erected by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1934 in memory of all African American military men who have served in wartime. The top of the monument is a sculpted eternal flame, the "Torch of Life," surrounded by four American eagles. Below the torch, a female allegorical figure of justice stands holding wreaths symbolic of honor and reward. She is flanked by five figures of African American military personnel from each branch of the armed service. A dedication is inscribed into the memorial's granite pedestal which is adorned with a wreath. Erected after much controversy on Lansdowne Avenue, the memorial was moved in 1994 to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway opposite the Franklin Institute., Numbered 8419 on verso., Sheet number: 88L01., Divided back. Statues on the lowest tier portray "typical" American human figures and animals. Designed by Rudolf Siemering in 1897 and unveiled at the Green Street entrance to Fairmount Park. Moved to Eakins Oval at the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1928. Contains views of Strawberry Mansion in Fairmount Park including the entrance stairway with a group of women and children; the drive and a partial view of the Strawberry Mansion trolley bridge; the fountain statue; the spring; the top of Strawberry Hill showing people picnicking and reclining on the green and several views of the mansion house. Judge William Lewis commissioned the mansion house, also known as Summerville, in 1789. In the 1820s Joseph Hemphill bought the property and added two wings to the house. His son Coleman grew strawberries from roots imported from Chile, giving the property its popular name, Strawberry Mansion. The house became a picnicking spot and restaurant in 1835.
