- Description
- Series of illustrated trade cards depicting anthropomorphic frogs, fairy-like figures, and a bee wearing large collars around their necks and wrists as they fly, dance, play the banjo, and sit near the pond. The Celluloid Manufacturing Company was established in 1872 in Newark, New Jersey., Includes advertising text printed on versos: Celluloid. (Water-proof linen.) Collars, cuffs and shirt bosoms. Elastic, linen finish, durable. When soiled, rub with soap or water (hot or cold), used freely with a stiff brush. Advice to wearers. Always slip the necktie under the roll of the turn down collar. Do not attempt to straighten the fold. The goods give better satisfaction if the separable sleeve button and collar button is used. Twist a small rubber elastic, or chamois washer around the post of sleeve button, to prevent rattling of button. To remove yellow stains which may come from long wearing, use sapolio soap, or salertus water, or celluline. When the card is folded, Senator Jones frowns and is unhappy that his wife did not use Noix de Coco and pushes away the baked goods to her surprise. When the card is opened, a smiling and happy Senator Jones holds a knife in preparation to cut the cake his wife made with Noix de Coco, which she happily displays for him to see. Satirizes Florida Senator Charles William Jones, who abandoned his position ca. 1885 because of mental illness. - Illustrated business card depicting tiny embossed orange vignettes of an owl, lion, bird and instruments within an oval formed by a single orange line. Rau served as the official photographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1891 and the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1895. Rau, a professional Philadelphia photographer, began his career as assistant to Philadelphia photographer William Bell; served as the primary photographer of E.L. Wilson's Middle East photographic expedition (1881-1882); and was sole proprietor of a prolific photographic studio that issued lantern slides, stereographs, and photographs between 1887 and 1920. - Trade card for the small portable washing machine invented by George D. Ferris and marketed by Johnston Bros., "General Agents for the United States." Depicts two male fairies, one white and one African American, presenting a "Missouri Steam Washer. Pat'd. May 1, 1883" to a white woman who stands over a washboard in a wash tub. Steam rises from the tub filled with clothes. The African American fairy, portrayed in racist caricature with orange wings and attired in blue pants with suspenders, pushes in the metal washing machine on a dolly, while the other fairy points to it.
