Title: Awful accident on the North Pennsylvania Rail Road on Thursday July 17th 1856
Description: Disaster scene showing the "Picnic Train Tragedy", the worst rail disaster at that time. Shows the burning wreck near Ambler, Pa. from the collision of North Pennsylvania excursion trains "Shakamoxon," departed from the Cohocksink depot, and "Aramingo" departed from the Wissahickon station. Burning tangled engines and train cars pile up on the single track line in the middle of farmland. Rear cars remain unscathed and a horse pulling a buggy rears up as it approaches the wreck site. Bodies lay near an overturned car in the foreground. One train carried hundreds of children from St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church Sunday School in Philadelphia. The crash occurred due to an attempt by the "Shakamoxon" engineer to make up time for its late departure. It collided with the regularly scheduled Aramingo, before arriving at a siding pass. The boilers of the trains collided and caused an explosion that decimated the front cars, but left the rear cars intact. Description: Exterior view of the First Independent Church, later renamed Chambers Presbyterian Church, built 1831 at the northeast corner of Broad and Sansom streets. Also shows a partial view of an adjacent building and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians include a couple with a child and two men greeting one another. Also contains amateur ink-drawn and hand-colored modifications. Retouches show fire hoses in front of the buildings leading to firefighters using a hand-pumper to fight a blaze in the background. Description: Advertisement calendar for 1865 containing patriotic and seasonal vignettes, scenes, and allegorical figures framing a calendar. Upper corners contain an autumnal and winter scene. Autumnal scene shows a farmer at his plow with farmhands reaping wheat in the background and a yard of farm animals in the foreground. Winter scene shows individuals skating on a pond as a sled passes by, near a couple talking to a soldier under the gaze of two dogs. Dwellings and a train also comprise the landscape of the scenes. Lower corners contain the the breast-bearing female allegorical figures of Spring and Summer. Spring holds a sprig of flowers and Summer holds a basket of fruit. Patriotic imagery includes a battle scene, and the figure of Columbia surrounded by flags and soldiers, including an injured private, and another passing a laurel wreath to a fellow compatriot. Other vignettes show an artist working at a drawing table, and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone.
