View showing several park visitors surrounding the monument sculpted by Randolph Rogers that was erected in 1871 at East River (i.e, Kelly) and Lemon Hill drives. Visitors view the monument, converse, greet one another, read newspapers, sit on benches, and ride in carriages. Monument shows Abraham Lincoln, seated, with a quill in his hand after just signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The statue rests upon a pedestal adorned with sculpted garland, bronze eagles, and the City of Philadelphia’s Coat of Arms. The granite base is adorned with four panels inscribed with a dedication to and quotes from Lincoln of which two are visible. The monument was commissioned by the Lincoln Monument Association, one of the first such associations formed in the country, to raise funds for a city monument in memory of Lincoln. Diploma depicting six vignettes and graphic elements symbolizing agriculture and horticulture separated into distinct scenes by borders designed as trees and foliage. At the top, a winged, female allegorical figure, attired in a robe and laurel wreath, sits with her arms outstretched over a shield surmounted by an eagle. She holds a bugle in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right, and she reaches in the direction of two horses that flank the shield. Images of a railroad locomotive crossing a stone arch bridge (left) and a waterfront industrial complex (right) flank the winged figure. On the sides, scenes depict cattle and sheep grazing, men harvesting a field with a horse-drawn reaper, and a man feeding horses near a large bale of hay. At the bottom, tools and agricultural products surround the society's blind stamp, and include farm produce, scythes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Advertisement for Daniel Mershon's Sons heating and ventilating warehouse at 1203 Filbert Street. Shows busy street and pedestrian traffic in front of the four-story red brick warehouse heavily adorned with signage and a "Russian Heater Works" flag at the northwest corner of Twelfth and Filbert streets. Signs advertising patent airtight heaters, grates, registers, ventilators, fireplace heaters, ranges, slate mantels, and house warming and cooking ranges are visible near the doorway and in the show windows of the storefront. Stoves, ranges, and fireplaces are displayed in the windows and on the sidewalk. Laborers load heating equipment into a store delivery wagon marked "Prepare for Winter" as a patron leaves the store near a policeman standing at the corner of the building. Several pedestrians wearing heavy coats, hats, and muffs walk in the street and on the sidewalks near several horse-drawn vehicles, including sleighs and a "Twelfth Street Passenger Railway" streetcar. Also shows partial views of horse-drawn wagons and of neighboring buildings in addition to a man on horseback. View showing the laboratory complex of processing plants and storage sheds established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Men and women converse near the entrance to the complex in the foreground, as a horse-drawn cart exits the compound. In the background, a locomotive travels past the complex (right) and a laborer works with a team of horses that pull several railroad carts loaded with goods (left) on the series of tracks surrounding the complex. View also shows adjacent lots of pasture land. In the lower corners are two vignettes depicting exterior views of the tartaric and citric acid department and the laboratory for fine chemicals at Ninth and Parrish Streets. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United States. A second factory complex operated between 9th, Parrish, Brown, and Darien Streets. View showing the "dwelling house" hotel built on Walnut Street between 33rd and 34th streets for the Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Guests stand on the porch of the twenty-six house hotel and elegantly dressed men, women and children stroll the grounds in front of the hotel. The house number of each of the twenty-six properties, from 3300-3350, is labeled above the roof line. A Chestnut and Walnut Street streetcar filled with passengers travels east as horse-drawn carriages and coaches travel in both directions on Walnut Street. The park, established in 1855 by the Point Breeze Park Association of sportsmen, promoted trotting races as agricultural exhibitions to circumvent an 1817 city ban of horse racing. Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters extinguishing a blaze at the Union League of Philadelphia (burned September 7, 1866); the Good Will fire station; and a horse-drawn fire engine. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hat, a ladder, an axe, and other tools are drawn bundled together to form decorative elements on both sides. Pictorial elements are divided by a twisting fire hose. A company ambulance resting upon two intertwining American flags appears above the text., Not in Wainwright., Issued to William H. It extends from the Lancaster Turnpike to the Monument Road, and it is intersected by the old Lancaster Road, thus having the advantage of three excellent roads. It also has constant communication of passenger rail road. The elevation is 250 feet above tide, the highest ground within an equal distance of the center of the city, of which it commands a splendid panoramic view. In the foreground, trains travel in opposite directions on the rail tracks that overpass Old Lancaster Road (labeled). Horse-drawn carriages and wagons travel on Lancaster and under the overpass, cows and horses graze on the hillsides, and the residences of David George (1), Jesse George (2), and Edmund George (3) are visible in the background. Also shows the ravine for a proposed lake (4), the distant steeple of Episcopal Hospital (5), and the toll house (6) on Lancaster Road. Upper view shows the Philadelphia skyline from Panorama Hill. Cows graze in the foreground in front of fenced pastures. In the distant background, steeples and roofs of prominent landmarks, predominately churches, are visible. Panoramas show schematic views of Philadelphia, and the views show Independence Hall, 1867 and Gould & Company's Union Depots located at N.E. cor. 9th & Market Sts. and at 37 & 39 N. Second Street. Panoramic views predominately show the Eastern, Western, and Central portions of the city from across the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers. Major landmarks are visually highlighted and identified by text below the images.
