- Advertisement depicting a view looking toward the rear of the busy store. Shows bookcases filled with texts mounted atop cabinets and drawers lining the walls. Stacks of books and eight busts of prominent literary figures, including Shakespeare, adorn the tops of the cases. A clerk works from within and patrons surround a U-shaped central book display that contains a "Gifts" case. Patrons include men, women, and children. The individuals receive assistance at the case, peruse books on the shelves, carry their purchases, converse, and make payment at the cashier booth. The booth, enclosed with ornate white iron work, contains advertising text that reads "A Gift with Each Book Sold at Retail Price." Store signage is also displayed on three banners stretching across the ceiling. Additional advertising text includes "Gift Book Sales Originated by G.G. Evans' 1854." - Proof print of a panoramic view showing the Delaware riverfront near the Walnut Street Wharf. Includes from south to north the merchant house of Samuel and William Welsh (218 S. Del. Ave.), Bloodgood's Hotel (10 Walnut, infamous for the 1855 Jane Johnson fugitive slave case), the wharf, the Cope Line Ticket office (1 Walnut, major passenger service for Irish immigrants operated by the merchants, the Cope Brothers), and Bethel Mariner's Church, i.e., Mariner's Presbyterian Church (organized 1830 on Water St. above Walnut St.). Several vessels, including one at the Walnut Street Wharf and two Liverpool packets of Cope, are docked in the choppy waters of the river. Also shows crates and barrels piled on piers and under shelters at the docks, street activity, and buildings running west on Walnut Street. On either side of the calendar, female allegorical figures within elements styled as Faberge eggs are depicted. Figures include Peace, Liberty, Mortality, Music, Poetry, and Art. Below the calendar, female allegorical figures and scenes contrast the wilderness of 1776 with an industrial city of 1876. - View of the first permanent First City Troop armory erected in 1863 at 21st and Ludlow streets below Market Street. Shows mounted members of the troop, including a bugler making a call, creating a formation on the street beside the building. Troop members on foot enter the building and walk on the sidewalk as two on mounts exit from the side of the armory. Also shows civilian spectators and pedestrians, including a gentleman tipping his hat to a couple of ladies. Armory was rebuilt in 1874. The church was established in 1794 by the religious and beneficent organization, the Free African Society, as a result of the discriminatory practices of the city’s congregations. - Advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer at 120, i.e., 324 Chestnut Street. Shows two well-dressed women in a boudoir that is decorated with carpet, drapes, and a candlelabra. One woman combs her long, lush, flowing hair with her back to a nightstand with a mirror as she looks at the second woman with short wispy hair. Perfume bottles rest on the night stand. Also contains an ornamental border including columns and advertising text. Text promotes the stopping of "decay in the middle of decline, to preserve what is beautiful" through use of Haul's "Hair Restorative" that "stops the falling off of Hair, promotes the growth of it, vivifies the roots and the skin and gives a new vigor to hair." - View showing the working central marble fountain in the public square, originally known as the Northeast Square, laid out between Race, Vine, North Sixth, and North Franklin streets. Includes several well-dressed park visitors, including a woman with a child in a tram, strolling, in conversation, reading, seated on park stools, and feeding a squirrel. Also shows trees lining the plaza, a guard house, and partial views of buildings obstructed by the fountain in the background. Ornamental border surrounds the view. Built in 1837, the fountain was one of several improvements to the square following the relinquishment of the grounds by the German Reformed Church circa 1836. Square renamed in 1825. A horse-drawn wagon, a man pushing a handcart of linens, and a line of pedestrians approach the entrance of the hospital complex that is guarded by a soldier. Within the complex, visitors stroll and a troop of soldiers drill in the central courtyards bordered by over twenty wards. - Advertisement in Spanish, English, and French for the Bush Hill Iron Works originally established by Oliver Evans in 1809 and operated by Neall, Matthews & Moore 1846-1854. Shows the bustling complex of several buildings and grounds littered with cylinders, tubes, castings and a pile of coal around which several laborers toil. The workers transport machinery by horse-drawn cart, hoist cylinders onto a dray, hammer castings, push handcarts, fuel the furnace, and labor in the workshops. Also shows a man entering the "Neall & Matthews" office. Image surrounded by decorative border. Contains several lines of advertising text below the titles promoting the products of the works, including cylinders, steam engines, boilers, mills, pans, hammers, anvils, and castings; the efficiency of two Air-Furnaces to fill roll orders "without delay"; and "all orders for machinery or castings thankfully received and promptly executed." James Neal retired in 1854 and Matthew and Moore carried on the business until 1870 when James Moore assumed sole proprietorship. - Exterior view of the First Independent Church, later renamed Chambers Presbyterian Church, built 1831 at the northeast corner of Broad and Sansom streets. Also shows a partial view of an adjacent building and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians include a man with a cane, a woman with a parasol, and two men greeting one another. Church housed the independent congregation of Rev. John Chambers. Congregation admitted to the Presbytery in 1873., Inscribed on the mount: In March of 1830, the cornerstone was laid. In June of 1831, the Church was opened for religious worship. In April, 1853, the Church was enlarged by an extension Eastward of Fifteen feet and the erection of a portico in front. This picture is undoubtedly the church that commenced in March, 1830, and first opened for worship in June, 1831., Title from label taped on verso. - Sheet music cover containing a view of Fairmount looking south from Reservoir Hill at Fairmount Water Works. Includes a partial view of the Engine House, the landscaped South Garden with fountain, the Upper Ferry Bridge over the Schuylkill River, and Harding's Hotel, the popular resort on the west bank. Also show several park visitors ascending the hill and walking the grounds. The waterworks were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Frederick Graff.
