Description: Series of views depicting thoroughbred horses at the International Live Stock Exhibition on the Centennial grounds in 1876 include, "Graphic," owned by W.T. Cook of Foxborough, Massachusetts, "Bismark," owned by F.G. Wolbert of Jersey City, New Jersey, and two thoroughbred stallions from Canada. Also shows a view of the "Herefords" shed and three herefords (a type of cattle bred for market) on view during the livestock display at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia. Description: Album of predominantly landscape photographs of the Delaware Valley and upstate New York taken by Philadelphia amateur photographer John C. Browne. Contents include views of Tacony, Cobb’s, Chester, and Pennypack Creeks; Germantown; Fairmount Park and the Wissahickon; Media, Dauphin, and Hamburg, Pa.; and Dutchess County and Newburgh, N.Y. Views also show estates, including S. H. Lloyd Garden on School House Lane and the W.C. Kent residence (Germantown), Mount Pleasant (Fairmount Park), Henry W. Sargent’s estate (Wodenthe) in Fishkill on the Hudson, and Presqu’ile (built 1813, Dutchess County, N.Y.); churches, including St. Timothy’s (built 1862, Roxborough) and St. Luke’s (Matteawan, Beacon, N.Y.); bridges, including the Norristown Railroad Bridge, Ridge Avenue Bridge, and the P.R.R. Macpherson, a privateer during the Seven Years’ War, purchased the estate with profits from these operations. Free white and Black laborers, indentured servants, and at least four enslaved people of African descent, whose names are unknown, worked on the plantation. In 1779, General Benedict Arnold purchased Mount Pleasant for his wife Peggy Shippen, but they never occupied the house. In 1792, General Jonathan Williams purchased the mansion. The City of Philadelphia purchased the property from the Williams family in 1869. Description: Photographic reproduction of a drawing after a racist cartoon published in Harper's Bazar in 1871 alluding to the social and political tensions between Irish and African American people following passage of the right to vote amendment. Shows an African American woman, a broom in one hand, her other hand on her hip, at her front porch, watching her two sons playing in the dirt. The woman is portrayed in racist caricature and speaks in the vernacular. She has a rotund figure and is attired in a head kerchief, a button-down shirt, an ankle-length skirt, and an apron. Her children make a mud pie beside the porch and in front of a tall wooden fence. Title: Rev. Alexander Crummell
Description: Three-quarter length portrait of Rev. Crummell, the African American Episcopal priest, educator, missionary, and Black nationalist. Crummell is attired in his clerical robes, over a vest, long sack coat, and trousers. He wears eye glasses, a beard, and holds his right hand up to his chest, holding what is possibly a pipe. Crummell, born in New York and the first African American graduate of the University of Cambridge, lived as a missionary and educator in Liberia between 1853 and 1873. He returned to the U.S. and located to Washington, D.C. where in 1875 he and his congregation founded St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the first independent Black Episcopal church in the city. He spoke before the "Philadelphia Library Company" in St. Thomas's Episcopal Church about "The Natives of Africa, their Habits, Customs, Religion, and Characteristics" on December 10, 1861. Description: Interior view of the office of the Grand Union Hotel in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. showing two employees at the front desk. An African American man, attired in a suit, stands and leans his left elbow on the desk. A white man, attired in a suit, stands behind the desk with a large book opened in front of him. Architectural details of the large space include columns draped in flower garlands, a tiled floor, and a large clock hanging above the desk. Built originally as Gideon Putnam's tavern and boarding house in 1802, the hotel formed through many expansions and additions. The name of the hotel as it appears on the stereograph was adopted in 1869.
