Description: Membership certificate for the patriotic nativist women's society established in New York in 1845 as an auxilliary to the Order of United Americans. Contains a vignette portrait of Martha Washington flanked by the allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice perched in a cluster of clouds. Below on each side, columns entwined with the American flag and adorned with the American eagle and shield rest on pedestals decorated with horns of cornucopia. Description: Advertisement showing the two-story brownstone storefront, adorned with signage, of the liquor dealer who relocated to 806 Lombard Street circa 1875. Barrels, visible through the open central entry, are stacked within the space on the first floor. Architectural ornamentations and etched, arched windows adorn the upper story facade. A man, possibly proprietor Gallagher, stands near one of two other doorways to the establishment across from a laborer prying on one of several barrels lined on the sidewalk. Description: Satiric scene showing high society, i.e., "bon-ton" in a Philadelphia oyster cellar. A "gentleman" descends the stairwell to the swankly decorated cellar where a motley gathering of men drink, smoke, gossip, and suck oysters. An African American bartender serves drinks from decanters in the left of the image. The bar is adorned with a notice reading "City Privilege still without license." Another African American attends the oyster bar. Plates, crackers, salt, and vinegars line the edge. In the right of the image, a sick-faced patron wobbles and spills his drink next to a tall clock with a decorated face and the inscription "Music has charms." Description: Advertisement for the Philadelphia lithographic firm containing an ornate stone monument adorned with allegorical figures, and historical and work scenes. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Above the arch sits the figure of Lithography. She holds an ink roller and a lithographic stone. A cherub draws on the stone opposite another cherub with a portfolio. Scene, on the pedestal of the monument, show a lithographic artist drawing on a stone and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone at his press. Description: Beautiful, elaborate advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer showing a ballroom scene set within a monument designed as a stage surrounded by floral ornaments. Shows couples attired in evening wear introducing themselves, conversing, and dancing in the ballroom. Two women hold fans. Chandelier lampposts and red drapery frame the scene. Two archways showing vistas to outdoor sceneries of trees and urns of greenery flank the monument. Loose, bundled, and cornucopias of flowers, encase the monument. Also contains two poles entwined with banners on the outer sides. Description: Advertisement for Daniel Mershon's Sons heating and ventilating warehouse at 1203 Filbert Street. Shows busy street and pedestrian traffic in front of the four-story red brick warehouse heavily adorned with signage and a "Russian Heater Works" flag at the northwest corner of Twelfth and Filbert streets. Signs advertising patent airtight heaters, grates, registers, ventilators, fireplace heaters, ranges, slate mantels, and house warming and cooking ranges are visible near the doorway and in the show windows of the storefront. Stoves, ranges, and fireplaces are displayed in the windows and on the sidewalk. Description: Active scene showing the pleasure garden resort conceived by Philadelphia lawyer Peter A. Browne that was built 1828 in the style of a Chinese pagoda after designs by John Haviland on the 2400 block of Fairmount Avenue. Couples stroll on the veranda. Horse-drawn sulkies race near a man on horseback and a boy running in the foreground. Also shows horse-drawn carriages parked in a stable. Several male guests lounge on the porch as a gentleman enters the hotel. Also shows pedestrians and a valet hauling luggage with a hand cart. Contains a N.B. about "charges moderate" for a "ladies' dining room, for the accommodation of families, that do not wish a private parlor." Title: Riot in Philadelphia July 7, 1844
Description: Discrepant news print showing a battle scene from the second series of anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia in July 1844 that stemmed from the defensive arming of St. Philip de Neri Catholic Church in preparation of a July 4 Nativist party parade. Shows the melee around the city militia under attack from the Protestant rioters depicted as gentlemen in top hats and coats. In the foreground, a rioter picks up a brick as his compatriots fire at a charging band of militiamen near an illuminated lamppost. One soldier lays fallen on the ground as a rioter collapses over him. To the right, a mother flees with her children as men fight hand-to-hand in front of a group of onlookers. The crowd watches another band of militia attempt to guard the targeted Catholic church that is marked "I.H.S. A.D., 1840." In the background, rioters and the militia fire cannons at one another. In actuality, rioters gained control and set the church on fire by the morning of July 7, causing the militia to try and clear a neighboring street on which the combat and cannon fire occurred.
