- Membership certificate for the patriotic nativist women's society established in New York in 1845 as an auxilliary to the Order of United Americans. Contains a vignette portrait of Martha Washington flanked by the allegorical figures of Liberty and Justice perched in a cluster of clouds. Below on each side, columns entwined with the American flag and adorned with the American eagle and shield rest on pedestals decorated with horns of cornucopia. Between the columns, a "United Daughter" leads a little girl to another "United Daughter" who welcomes them into a temple adorned with garlands of flowers. Shows commission supply wagons arriving and depositing crates of goods at a campsite; soldiers assisting other soldiers in walking, receiving refreshments, and being transported by a gurney; and an unloaded crate of bottles of beverages, oranges, tins, and bandages. In the center foreground, a small crowd gathers around a man reading a newspaper as around them, throngs of individuals traverse the frozen walkway, promenade as couples, make conversation, and fall, laugh, and grab one another as they slip on the ice. Several men skate, boys sled, dogs chase each other, and children frolic, including a pair retrieving a hat from a broken patch of ice. Others peddle refreshments from a table and flee from broken ice as ruffians engage in a fist fight. In July 1836, the "George Washington" hauled a load of 19,200 pounds at 15 miles per hour up the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad's inclined Belmont Plane. - Advertisement showing the two-story brownstone storefront, adorned with signage, of the liquor dealer who relocated to 806 Lombard Street circa 1875. Barrels, visible through the open central entry, are stacked within the space on the first floor. Architectural ornamentations and etched, arched windows adorn the upper story facade. A man, possibly proprietor Gallagher, stands near one of two other doorways to the establishment across from a laborer prying on one of several barrels lined on the sidewalk. In the street, a boy attends to one of two horses drawing a cart loaded with more barrels. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. Gallagher immigrated to the United States in 1856 and established a wholesale liquor business in Philadelphia. - Satiric scene showing high society, i.e., "bon-ton" in a Philadelphia oyster cellar. A "gentleman" descends the stairwell to the swankly decorated cellar where a motley gathering of men drink, smoke, gossip, and suck oysters. An African American bartender serves drinks from decanters in the left of the image. The bar is adorned with a notice reading "City Privilege still without license." Another African American attends the oyster bar. Plates, crackers, salt, and vinegars line the edge. In the right of the image, a sick-faced patron wobbles and spills his drink next to a tall clock with a decorated face and the inscription "Music has charms." - Advertisement for the Philadelphia lithographic firm containing an ornate stone monument adorned with allegorical figures, and historical and work scenes. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Above the arch sits the figure of Lithography. She holds an ink roller and a lithographic stone. A cherub draws on the stone opposite another cherub with a portfolio. Scene, on the pedestal of the monument, show a lithographic artist drawing on a stone and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone at his press. Shows busy street and pedestrian traffic in front of the four-story red brick warehouse heavily adorned with signage and a "Russian Heater Works" flag at the northwest corner of Twelfth and Filbert streets. Signs advertising patent airtight heaters, grates, registers, ventilators, fireplace heaters, ranges, slate mantels, and house warming and cooking ranges are visible near the doorway and in the show windows of the storefront. Stoves, ranges, and fireplaces are displayed in the windows and on the sidewalk. Laborers load heating equipment into a store delivery wagon marked "Prepare for Winter" as a patron leaves the store near a policeman standing at the corner of the building. - Active scene showing the pleasure garden resort conceived by Philadelphia lawyer Peter A. Browne that was built 1828 in the style of a Chinese pagoda after designs by John Haviland on the 2400 block of Fairmount Avenue. Couples stroll on the veranda. Horse-drawn sulkies race near a man on horseback and a boy running in the foreground. Also shows horse-drawn carriages parked in a stable. - Riot in Philadelphia July 7, 1844
- Description
- Discrepant news print showing a battle scene from the second series of anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia in July 1844 that stemmed from the defensive arming of St. Philip de Neri Catholic Church in preparation of a July 4 Nativist party parade. Shows the melee around the city militia under attack from the Protestant rioters depicted as gentlemen in top hats and coats. In the foreground, a rioter picks up a brick as his compatriots fire at a charging band of militiamen near an illuminated lamppost. One soldier lays fallen on the ground as a rioter collapses over him. To the right, a mother flees with her children as men fight hand-to-hand in front of a group of onlookers. The crowd watches another band of militia attempt to guard the targeted Catholic church that is marked "I.H.S. A.D., 1840." In the background, rioters and the militia fire cannons at one another. In actuality, rioters gained control and set the church on fire by the morning of July 7, causing the militia to try and clear a neighboring street on which the combat and cannon fire occurred. Includes a partial view of the Engine House, the landscaped South Garden with fountain, the Upper Ferry Bridge over the Schuylkill River, and Harding's Hotel, the popular resort on the west bank. Also show several park visitors ascending the hill and walking the grounds. The waterworks were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Frederick Graff. - Shows hundreds of members, their faces copied from photographs, of the German-American shooting club posed on the grounds of the club park, Schützen Park, east of Indian Queen Lane in East Falls. The massive crowd of prominent men, many holding rifles, sits, stands, reclines on rocks, lift their hat in celebration, greet one another, and attend to their hunting dogs. At the center of the group, a man wears a sash and holds the banner of the club. Five different types of hunting dogs are depicted in the foreground. Also shows the banquet hall and members taking target practice in the background.
