Description: View showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool. Also shows visitors, including a woman with a parasol, strolling around the memorial. Another drinks from a cup at the "Matthew" fountain. Title: The old Phila. fire department. Period of 1850. The great engine contest on Sunday evening July 7th 1850 at 5th & Market sts
Description: Arousing scene after the memory of Spieler showing the city's volunteer fire companies battling the July 7, 1850 fire at Peter Wright & Sons glass store on the north side of the 500 block of Market Street. Shows firefighters, in full uniforms, congesting the street around the market houses and in front of the burning building. Members, including an African American firefighter, from the United States, Vigilant, Diligent, Southwark, Pennsylvania, Weccaco, Liberty, and several other companies battle the blaze using hand pump engines and hose carriages. The men run and connect hoses, transport the vehicles, and spray streams of water at the smoking building that also contains the businesses of Hieskell, Hoskins & Co., dry goods and James Smith & Co., booksellers and publishers. Other firefighters pump the engines, blow trumpets, and stand on the roof of the storefronts. Several lines of hoses, several weighed down and or leaking water, criss cross in the street in the foreground. Description: Advertisement showing the busy interior of the saloon and concert hall built 1857 on the 500 block of North Third Street. Men, women, and children patrons sit, drink, read, approach, and are served at several tables in front of a stage. In the foreground, men gather near two bars on each side of the saloon. The bar in the right of the image contains a soda fountain. Each is manned by bartenders and is stocked with bottles of liquor. A framed painting, a wall clock, and a large mirror decorate the areas. Several hanging and plotted plants adorn the balconies that are lined with windows. In the background, an actor and two actresses perform on the stage that is flanked by statuary and has a painted backdrop. Title: Wetherill & Brothers white lead manufactory & chemical works, corner of 12th & Cherry streets, Philadelphia
Description: View predominately showing the yard of the complex built circa 1812-1813 for the earliest American white lead manufactory founded by Samuel Wetherill Jr. in the 1780s. Factory workers labor between a horse-drawn cart, and rows and stacks of crates, barrels, and vats, which cover the yard that is surrounded by buildings. Several smoke stacks adorn the roofs of the shops. Following the circa 1812 fire of the Wetherill white lead manufactory at Broad and Chestnut streets, the new factory was built at the northeast corner of 12th & Cherry streets, including the addition of a chemical manufactory.
