- Sheet music cover showing the Falcon crew on their barge near the Fairmount Water Works. The nine-men crew includes a coxswain and eight oarsmen wearing striped uniforms, the latter holding up their oars. The barge is adorned with an American flag on the bow and the club flag on the stern. Also shows the covered bridge, known as the Upper Ferry Bridge (destroyed by fire in 1838) in the background. The waterworks were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Frederick Graff. - Advertisement showing the storefront with large display windows of "Edward Roussel, Foreign Perfumery & Fancy Articles, French Perfumery, Mineral Water" at 114, i.e., 318 Chestnut Street. Within the store, a clerk serves mineral water to a couple at the counter. The woman sits, her parasol by her side as the man stands. Tall glass-door cabinets rise behind the clerk. Materials displayed in the windows include a stuffed bear, bottles, mason jars, canisters, and framed certificates. A drain pipe adorns the building. Also contains vignettes above and below the title showing the business's mineral water delivery wagon, and silver medals awarded to the perfumer by the "Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania, 1824" and "Reward of Skill and Ingenuity, 1842." Roussel operated from the site 1843-1849. Bear's oil was a popular product offered by Philadelphia perfumers, the major American suppliers, between the 1830s and 1850s. - Advertisement for the Philadelphia lithographic firm containing an ornate stone monument adorned with allegorical figures, and historical and work scenes. The central scene in the recess of the monument shows the anecdotal story of the "The Discovery of Lithography 1796 by Aloys [sic] Senefelder." Depicts Senefelder in his study, absent of paper, writing a laundry list with a grease pencil on lime stone to record his mother's laundry list as she stands behind him with her laundry basket. Books lay on the floor and on a bookshelf on the wall above rulers and a level. The allegorical figures of Commerce and Art stand near columns on each side of the arched recess. Above the arch sits the figure of Lithography. She holds an ink roller and a lithographic stone. A cherub draws on the stone opposite another cherub with a portfolio. Scene, on the pedestal of the monument, show a lithographic artist drawing on a stone and a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone at his press. The monument also contains sculpture, gargoyles, ornamental bas-reliefs, and pendants. Flowering vines surround the edges of the monument. The firm operated under the name T. - Disaster scene showing the aftermath of the explosion of the factory of Professor Samuel Jackson located in South Philadelphia. Shows people fleeing, trapped, and engulfed in flames at the ruins of the burning factory. In the foreground, a man rushes to cover a man's body that has had its head and arm amputated; men throw buckets of water and blankets on women on fire; individuals carry the wounded; comfort the survivors; rush in with buckets; and hose the fire. Also shows a man looking in horror from a train car in the left of the image and debris flying in the air and lying on the ground. Over 15 people, including the son of the proprietor, perished in the explosion of the factory that was contracted to produce one and a half million experimental "solid water proof patent cartridges" during the Civil War. Jackson, a Philadelphia pyrotechnist and inventor, began the manufacture of fireworks in Philadelphia in 1837. He continued in pyrotechnics until 1887, when he began to manufacture danger signals for railroads. - Disaster scene showing the commotion in front of the partially destroyed stores of John Brock & Co., and Gordon and Berger at 39 (i.e., 100 block) North Water Street. People hold a crowd back as fire fighters attend to the collapsing building spewing a cloud of smoke. A family, including a mother and child, flee past fire fighters rushing to a fallen comrade as debris falls down upon them. Also shows a man kneeling near the Vine Street Wharf as another stands in the center of the view with his arms up in the air. The explosion emanated from a fire started by the friction of a hoisting-machine igniting a large store of gunpowder and saltpeter in the Brock, and Gordon and Berger building. The blaze that spread about one square mile between Front and Callowhill streets destroyed actually about 367 houses and stores. Signage advertising the "lithographic establishment" adorns the doorway, front, and side of "Goldsmith's Hall." Building also adorned with large display windows and an eagle above the entranceway. View includes street and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk, stand in doorways, and enter the shop. In the street, horse-drawn wagons and drays, including one hauling crates marked "J.H.," pass in the street near a man pushing a hand-cart loaded with crates. Shows the elegantly furnished interior of the shop designed with a fresco ceiling and crown moldings. In the foreground, a display table lined with bolts of cloths stands in the center of the room. Surrounding furnishings include armoires, display dressers covered with bolts of cloth, large mirrors, and an ornate mantelpiece. Objet d'arts, books, and framed fashion plates adorn the mantel that is flanked by two wood chairs. A samovar on a small table stands in front of the mantelpiece. Framed fashion plates also adorn the walls in addition to chandeliers. In the background, four shop tailors trace patterns, and cut and measure cloth in a middle room that leads to another room with tables of cloth on display. Interior also includes an umbrella stand and wall clock. Covers of the circular show two full-length portraits of a younger and older man attired in suits. - Beautiful, elaborate advertisement for the Philadelphia perfumer and ink manufacturer showing a ballroom scene set within a monument designed as a stage surrounded by floral ornaments. Shows couples attired in evening wear introducing themselves, conversing, and dancing in the ballroom. Two women hold fans. Chandelier lampposts and red drapery frame the scene. Two archways showing vistas to outdoor sceneries of trees and urns of greenery flank the monument. Loose, bundled, and cornucopias of flowers, encase the monument. Also contains two poles entwined with banners on the outer sides. Banners are inscribed with the names of scented flowers, including camellia, lilac, magnolia, tea rose, sweet clover, patchouli, and musk. Harrison began operating his perfumery circa 1853 and by the late 1850s employed over 80 employees, including 25 traveling agents., Copyrighted by A. W. - Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 11 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene. Four men and three women socialize. Three of the men wear suits and one, dressed in evening attire, sits in a chair. Two of the men hold top hats and all have chin beards. One woman wears an evening dress and the other two women are attired in day dresses and bonnets. One of the latter pair wears a shawl and the other holds a handkerchief. Also includes framed pictures, mosaic carpeting, a window with drapery, and a pedestal displaying a vase of flowers. Lower panel shows the outdoor scene. In the center, "Genl. David R. Porter, Govr. Of Penna. Copied by permission of Huddy & Duval" wears his uniform and is mounted on his horse. To the left, two men in overcoats stand near a hitching post. - Certification certificate from the "Guardians, Physicians and Surgeons of the Pennsylvania Hospital" containing an exterior view of the Blockley Almshouse and Philadelphia General Hospital in West Philadelphia. The Board of Guardians, the governing board of the Guardians of the Poor, established in 1782 and abolished in 1877, oversaw the operations of the almshouse, including admissions, accounts, and employment of the poor. Includes a bat for "Mammalia"; a human skull for "Anatomy"; an eagle for "Ornithology" perched on a slab with rocks and minerals for "Mineralogy"; a butterfly for "Entomology"; stems of flowers and plants for "Botany"; a thorny fish for "Ichtheology"; pre-historic crustaceans for "Palaeonotolgy"; the skeleton of an elephant for "Comparative Anatomy"; a shell for "Conchology"; a rattlesnake for "Herpetology"; a horseshoe crab for "Crustacea"; and Fossils - "Botany," Entomology," "Crustacea," and "Zoology" showing a fossilized plant, fish, dragon fly and lobster. Filigree adorns the corners. Wagner Free Institute was founded in 1855 by philanthropist and professor William Wagner to provide free public education in the sciences.
