Title: Accident on the Camden and Amboy Railroad, near Burlington, N.J. Aug. 29th 1855. 21 persons killed_ 75 wounded
Description: Disaster scene showing the carnage and melee following the collision between a Camden and Amboy mail and passenger train on route from Philadelphia to New York and a horse-drawn wagon of an elderly physician. In the background, rescue workers attend to the tangled wrecks of the derailed passenger cars. Some are smashed and lay in a ditch. The mail car remains upright and on the tracks. The horse pulling the wagon lays dead, his guts seeping out, in the left of the image. Onlookers gather on a debris-strewn hill near the overturned wagon and crash site. In the foreground, dozens of evacuated passengers and crash victims lie on the ground and assist the injured among debris and passengers' valises and personal effects. The crash occurred when the train reversed its direction to accommodate a south-bound train on the one-track system. Physician John T. Hannegan witnessed the initial passing of the railcars and assumed he had safe crossing. Description: Genre winter scene showing male students frolicking in the snow at the east end of the main building of the co-educational Quaker boarding school. Boys build snowmen, have snow ball fights, and sled on the snow-laden grounds covered with footsteps. Westtown was established in 1794 by the Society of Friends as a boarding school for boys and girls. The campus was separated into the girls' and boys' bounds, i.e., yards for recreation. Title: Craig, Finley & Co. Steam-power lithographers and printers, 1020 Arch Street
Description: Series of tradecards advertising the lithographic firm established as Craig, Butt & Finley in 1869 and renamed Craig, Finley & Co. in 1872. Seven of the tradecards depict quaint scenes of children at play and work in addition to one containing a montage of vignette views of buildings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876. Scenes include a boy presenting flowers to a girl, children witnessing breaking and broken wares, children chasing a rabbit, a shepherd boy with a lamb, and girls performing the wash. All the boys are attired in knickers and most wear hats. Most of the girls are attired in peasant-like dresses. Centennial tradecard shows Machinery Hall, the Main Building, Art Gallery, Agricultural Hall, and Horticultural Hall. Also includes the promotional text: Publishers of this style Centennial Card. Title: Church of the Evangelists. Catharine St. west of 7th., Philadelphia
Description: View of the Episcopal church built 1856-1857 at 711-721 Catharine Street. Church property contains side courtyards enclosed by iron gates. Also show partial views of neighboring buildings and street and pedestrian traffic. Traffic includes a horse-drawn carriage, three men conversing on the sidewalk, a man on horseback, and a man walking, a coat over his arm, who is followed by a dog. Congregation formed in 1837 and admitted to the Episcopal church in 1842. The church was the last consecrated by Bishop Potter in the Philadelphia diocese in 1864. Title: United States Hotel, Philadelphia Chestnut Street, between 4th & 5th opposite the Custom House, (late Bank of U.S.) M. P. Mitchell, proprietor
Description: Advertisement showing heavy pedestrian and street activity in front of the large, prominent hotel opened in 1826 following the conversion by John Rea of several properties at 419-423 Chestnut Street. Several carriages, including one marked "U.S. Hotel" line up in front of the hotel. A group of men stand near the entranceway as other guests exit doorways and stand on the verandah. Signage for businesses tenanting the lower floor of the eastern section of the hotel is visible. Businesses include M. J. & C. Croll, tailor; G. W. Duffy's, fashionable hat & cap store; Blanchard & Rock, paper hangings. View includes adjacent buildings, including Farmers & Mechanics Bank (425-429) and W. Christie, upholsterer (411). Couples exit some of the storefronts, individuals promenade on the sidewalk, and a woman talks to two men at the steps of the bank. Also shows a coach traveling in the street near a running dog; two men conversing; two delivery boys, one with a basket standing near a well-dressed man walking and holding a small sack in his hand; and an African American laborer pushing a hand-cart loaded with a crate. Title: Diploma of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 18 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor setting. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 7 men, 2 boys and a woman socializing. Most of the men wear suits with striped pants, long coats, bow ties or a cravat and hold top hats and canes. The boys who cozy up to their seated father, wear a military style suit or a dress and pants. The woman, seated on a chaise lounge, wears a bonnet and holds a riding crop. Furnishings include a fireplace, mosaic carpeting, sofa, and a piano. Lower panel shows 7 men and a woman at an outdoor scene along the banks of the Schuylkill River across from the Blockley Almshouse and Schuylkill Permanent Bridge. The men wear fur-trimmed overcoats, a cloak with patterned lining, patterned pants, top hats, and a cap. Many hold canes or a riding crop and one man leans on a hitching post. The woman, turned to her side and her face obscured by a bonnet, wears a cloak and holds a muff. Most of the depicted men have some facial hair. Description: Advertisement after a circa 1858 oil painting "Magarge Paper Mill" by William E. Winner showing the expanded paper mill originally built for William Dewees in 1731 at the foot of Wise's Mill Road on the bucolic Wissahickon Creek. Mill includes the main building, boiler house, machine room, and chimney. Mill was rented by Charles Magarge (President of Bank of Germantown) in 1844 and purchased by him in 1853 and thereafter expanded to house a Fourdrinier Paper machine. It was the first mill to use wood pulp to make paper. Description: Print containing a central view of the female figure of America surrounded by scenes and vignettes that commemorate the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, in West Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. Shows America, wearing a liberty cap and holding a laurel wreath, seated on a throne that is bordered by American flags. Vignette portraits of the presidents and prominent military figures from the American Revolution encircle the image and a bird's eye view of the exhibition grounds, "Centennial Exhibition Buildings, Philadelphia,"and vignettes of Independence Hall, Faneuil Hall, and the Bunker Hill Monument are visible above it. Title: Conflagration of the steam boat New Jersey on the Delaware River opposite Philada March 15th 1856 in which 60 persons lost their lives
Description: Shows, in the distance, clouds of smoke rising from the Philadelphia and Camden Ferry Co. steamboat under the winter night sky as rowboats race to and from the wreck. In the foreground, two survivors sit and cling to cakes of ice near floating debris. In the right of the image, her sister ferry "Dido" travels to the rescue, the ship's reflection visible in the water. Captained by Ebenezer Corson, the "New Jersey," on mid-voyage to Camden from Philadelphia via an alternate elongated route due to heavy ice, caught fire as the result of defective boilers. With the fire spreading rapidly, Corson retreated to Arch Street Wharf in Philadelphia, and came within thirty feet of the pier when the pilot house collapsed leaving the boat unmanned and out of control.
