Description: Photograph showing the Deshler-Morris House at 5442 Germantown Avenue with two chimneys, and ivy climbing the walls. The house is surrounded by trees and a boy rides a bicycle on the sidewalk. The road in front of the house has trolley tracks running down the center. David Deshler built the original four-room summer cottage on this Germantown lot in 1752, adding the three-story front addition in 1772. The house was sold to Col. Isaac Franks in 1792 after Deshler’s death. President George Washington rented the home for the duration of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 and the summer of 1794. Elliston and John Perot purchased the house in 1804, selling it to Elliston’s son-in-law Samuel B. Morris after his death in 1834. The house stayed in the possession of the Morris family for over a century, when Elliston P. Morris donated the house to the National Parks Service in 1948. Title: Friends' Meeting House 4th & Arch Sts., Phila
Description: Photograph showing the Arch Street Meeting House at 320 Arch Street, a large, two-story brick building with shuttered windows. A brick sidewalk runs along the front of the meeting house next to a grassy lawn, and a wooden wall is on the left. A Quaker burial ground as early as 1683, the site was officially deeded as a burial ground in 1701. The Meeting House was built by carpenter Owen Biddle Jr. (1774-1806) in 1803-1804, with a second room added in 1811. The Meeting House has continued to host Quaker religious services through the 21st century, with the most recent building renovations adding second-floor conference rooms in 1969. Description: Photograph showing a group portrait of Marriott C. Morris' parents Elliston P. Morris and Martha Canby, siblings Samuel Buckley Morris and Elizabeth Canby Morris, and Anne Emlen and Mary Emlen next to a tree in Allaire, N.J. Elliston Morris stands, Mary Emlen and Elizabeth Morris lean against the tree and the others lounge in the grass. Each person looks in a different direction. The print is mounted on a cream colored board with a gold border. James P. Allaire (1785-1858) founded the Allaire Iron Works Company (later Howell Iron Works) in 1815. Allaire, New Jersey became a factory town for the company that built engines for steamboats circa 1824. The row homes for workers were completed in 1833, the blast furnace was made in 1831, and the Episcopalian church was built 1832-1836. Financial difficulties and discovery of iron ore deposits in Pennsylvania closed the Company in 1850.
