Title: Target firing State Fencibles, Capt. J. Page, the seat of Dr. William Wetherill, Fatland (near Valley Forge) Montgomery Co. Pa. June 14th 1859
Description: Scene showing the State Fencibles militia marching past the Wetherill mansion on the Fatland estate. The men march in seven lines, led by the Fencibles marching band, followed by officers, and then four lines of enlisted men fronted by a single Fencible. All the men wear uniforms and the officers wear Hardee hats, while the enlisted men wear tall, bearskin hats. In the left foreground, a group of well-dressed men, women, and children watch the militia. In the background, other guests line the portico and verandas of the mansion. near clusters of Fencibles and spectators lining the grounds in front of the mansion. The scene also includes the trees and bushes that surround the grounds and mansion. During the 1850s, Dr. Wetherill, partner in the Wetherill & Brother White Lead Works, annually invited the Fencibles to his estate for spring target firing. The June 1859 excursion included seventy-four muskets and five officers, a lunch, dinner, and dance. The State Fencibles was a military organization raised in Philadelphia in 1813 as part of the Pennsylvania militia. In 1871, the military company, recruited under James Page, became attached to the Eighth Regiment National Guard of Pennsylvania. The Fatland seat was owned by gentleman William Bakewell beginning in 1803 before being sold to the Wetherill Family about 1821 and his death. Title: Philadelphia Carnival. Easter Monday Night April 18th 1881 at the Academy of Music
Description: Ticket depicting a festive scene for the Philadelphia Carnival Bal Masque organized by the Maennechor Society, the city's German singing society. Scene depicts a man masquerading as a jester in a red costume breaking out of an egg-shaped prop (adorned with the date and location of the event) that lies on the back of a man costumed as a clown. The clown is attired in a white ensemble and is prone, lying on his stomach, and propped up by his hands. The clown wears a pointed hat, ruffled collar, wide-sleeved shirt, and blue-striped pants. Another jester, attired in a red head dress, blue shirt, and tan leggings, stands and watches to the left of the cracking egg from which his fellow jester propels himself. Above the standing jester, a putti pulls up a green drape with gold trim. In the right, in front of the clown and jester in red, a man with long blonde hair and costumed in colonial-era attire bows. He holds a tri-corn hat in his hand and wears a dark-brown coat, blue pantaloons, red shoes, and a flowing gold cape. In the right background, stands a group of male and female spectators costumed as a renaissance man, scullery maid, bald-headed clown, wizard, knight, and Quaker couple. The Maennerchor Society's Carnival Bal Masque began about 1864 and continued throughout at least the 1890s. Title: In commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of American independence
Description: Elaborate Centennial Exhibition commemorative print depicting an arched monument containing a central full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vignettes; allegorical figures; and religious quotes by the first president. Washington is depicted mounted on his horse. Arch is adorned with the names of the 38 states and is flanked by columns containing views representing the industries of the North, East, South, and West. Views show a white man laborer of the North chopping a tree at a waterfront, white women loom workers of the East, an overseer on horseback watching an enslaved African American man picking cotton in the South, and a white man farmer reaping his harvest with a horse-drawn plow in the West. Description: Morphed view of the Gothic-style bank building, erected in 1808 after the designs of Benjamin Henry Latrobe at the southwest corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets. Shows the building projecting upward from the plane of the paper causing a cathedral like effect to the architecture. A gate, lawn, and trees surround the building. An outbuilding is visible on the property. Couples and a lady with a parasol stroll on the sidewalk. The Philadelphia Bank or Bank of Philadelphia (predecessor of the Philadelphia National Bank), formed in 1803, and was incorporated in 1804 as the unofficial bank of the commonwealth. The building was razed in 1836. Description: Advertisement showing the busy industrial complex established circa 1819 by Alfred Jenks and enlarged in 1853 on the east side of Richmond Street between Franklin & Locust streets in Bridesburg. A horse-drawn flatbed truck enters the courtyard of the U-shaped complex containing several buildings that are surrounded by wood fencing. Within the yard, clusters of workers transport boxes and planks of wood by hand near an unhitched wagon surrounded by crates. A carriage with driver waits near a smaller building, landscaped with trees and attached to one of the large workshops. Outside the complex, a driver handles a four-horse team plodding to pull a truck loaded with two large machines as other factory workers transport planks, carry crates, mill about with their tools, drive a dray, and stand at a shed facing the street. Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. Two fountains near Walnut Street demonstrate the creator's desire to beautify the square with "fountains, vases, statuary, and flower beds of all varieties"; and bronze statues on pedestals of the fifty-six signers of "The Declaration of Independence" lining the periphery of the square, which on three sides is completely open and accessible to pedestrians via granite steps. Statues of George Washington, William Penn, a group of Native Americans, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay would face Chestnut Street near Independence Hall., Contains passages of explicative text printed on verso. Description: Bird's eye view designed as a grid plan looking southeast from Frankford Road (Northeast Philadelphia) toward the Delaware River showing the city between Westmoreland Street and a few blocks south of Columbia Street. Predominately depicts the open land surrounding the Aramingo Canal, Reading Railroad Depot between Lehigh Avenue and Somerset Street, and the Philadelphia, Trenton, and New York Railroad line. A few dwellings, churches, and other structures comprise the landscape with clusters and heavier congestion of buildings visible near Columbia Street. In the foreground, dwellings, most with plots of ground, a church, and the "Second & Third Street Passenger Railway Depot" line Frankford Road. Two street cars, one marked "Second & Third St.," travel in the street. In the background, congested blocks of buildings forms the majority of the cityscape. Title: Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, supported gratuitously by the citizens of Philadelphia, Pa
Description: Print containing an exterior view and three titled interior views of the saloon and hospital of the volunteer relief agency located near the Navy Yard at Swanson and Washington Avenues. Exterior view shows heavy street activity. A Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad train stops on the grounds in front of a cheering crowd of spectators. Hundreds of soldiers line up to enter and depart the "Hot Coffee and Refreshment" and "Water" stand and "Dining Saloon Free for Volunteers"; officers direct foot traffic onto the train; and other soldiers enter the adjacent "Post Office" and are greeted by women in front of a row of adjoining row homes. Also shows the O.K. House in the background, the fence of "W. Thorn Lehigh & Schuylkill Coal Yard," and an American flag marked "Union for Ever" adorning the saloon. Interior views, framed by scroll ornaments, shows a line of soldiers at, and others waiting for a row of wash basins at the "Washing Department"; the "Interior of the Dining Saloon Free for Union Volunteers" where soldiers wait in line for food, eat standing up at tables, and are served by female volunteers; and civilian spectators watching the men volunteers of the "Cooking Department" attend cauldrons atop ovens, and carry baskets of food and large coffee pots.
