Description: Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Title: Plan for the permanent improvement of Independence Square Designed by George F. Gordon
Description: Circular illustration showing an oblique elevation looking southwest at Independence Square, situated between Fifth and Sixth Streets, and Chestnut and Walnut Streets, modified with George F. Gordon's proposed changes. Includes old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans, Jr. (500 Chestnut); Independence Hall, built 1732-1748 after designs by Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley (520 Chestnut Street); and Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut). Eight equidistant walkways, "to be thirty feet wide, to be laid with variegated tile," radiate from the center to the corners of the square and are connected by a circular walk. Also shows the unexecuted Independence Monument (center), slated to be erected by the Thirteen Original States. Two fountains near Walnut Street demonstrate the creator's desire to beautify the square with "fountains, vases, statuary, and flower beds of all varieties"; and bronze statues on pedestals of the fifty-six signers of "The Declaration of Independence" lining the periphery of the square, which on three sides is completely open and accessible to pedestrians via granite steps. Title: Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co., office 2 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
Description: Exterior view of the terminal, factory complex and railyard adjacent to the piers and wharves at Greenwich Point along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia. Signage reading "Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." adorns the storage warehouse on the pier in the foreground, and "Office Tygert-Allen Fertilizer Co." is painted in large letters on a smaller building nearby. The on-deck rail carries cargo on tracks to and from docked ships into the second floor of a long building that sits behind Tygert-Allen's warehouse on the pier. Super phosphates storage, millroom, storeroom, engine house and boiler house are all located within the long building. Locomotives and carts full of freight travel along the railroad tracks that run parallel to the factory buildings. Workers and horse-drawn carts and coaches labor throughout the complex. Description: Fashion advertisement containing two panelled scenes of 17 elegantly attired men, women, and children in a parlor and outdoor, hunting setting. Upper panel shows four men, two women and three boys in a furnished parlor. All of the men are attired in long jackets, vests, cravats and patterned pants. Two hold or wear hats, and two hold canes. To the left, two men stand and converse with two women. The seated lady holds a fan and wears an evening dress, with a low, straight neckline. Her hair is styled in ringlets, and a flower rests behind her ear. The other woman adorns outerwear styled with a high-necked, tight-waisted dress, shawl and plumed bonnet. To the right, two men stand with three boys, who all wear flat caps. The boy on the left is dressed in an Eton suit, while the other two younger boys wear longer tunic suits. Title: The White Turtle & the Red Crab of Philadelphia
Description: Showing the Northern Liberties Hose Company (White Turtle) and the Lafayette Hose Company (Red Crab) racing to a bonfire near Eastern State Penitentiary on July 25, 1852 during a weekend of fires throughout the city. Men from each company run side-by-side and pull the ropes hooked to their companies' hose carriages. One man from each company stands at the front of their crew and plays a bugle or yells at the team to push forward. Dogs and pigs run beside the companies, flee the scene, and get caught under the wheel of the hose carriage. Includes a view of the buildings along the street, showing people running in the distance and a sign reading "coal." Description: View showing the laboratory complex of processing plants and storage sheds established in 1848 on Ridge Avenue near Schuylkill Falls (i.e., East Falls). Within the complex, laborers haul goods by horse among the several buildings, smoke stacks, and trees. Men and women converse near the entrance to the complex in the foreground, as a horse-drawn cart exits the compound. In the background, a locomotive travels past the complex (right) and a laborer works with a team of horses that pull several railroad carts loaded with goods (left) on the series of tracks surrounding the complex. Description: Exterior view of the front facade and flank of the Ninth Presbyterian Church showing well-dressed men, women and children entering the left and right entrances. The church, adorned with Gothic arched windows and details, was built circa 1815 on North Thirteenth Street with funds donated by Margaret Duncan to serve the poor and working class of Philadelphia. Originally named the Second Associate Reformed Church, the church was also commonly known as Margaret Duncan's Church or the Vow Church. Controversy over John Chambers appointment as a new minister of the church in the mid 1820s influenced his decision to form a new congregation with his supporters in 1830. Title: Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society [certificate]
Description: Diploma depicting six vignettes and graphic elements symbolizing agriculture and horticulture separated into distinct scenes by borders designed as trees and foliage. At the top, a winged, female allegorical figure, attired in a robe and laurel wreath, sits with her arms outstretched over a shield surmounted by an eagle. She holds a bugle in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right, and she reaches in the direction of two horses that flank the shield. Images of a railroad locomotive crossing a stone arch bridge (left) and a waterfront industrial complex (right) flank the winged figure. On the sides, scenes depict cattle and sheep grazing, men harvesting a field with a horse-drawn reaper, and a man feeding horses near a large bale of hay. At the bottom, tools and agricultural products surround the society's blind stamp, and include farm produce, scythes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Title: William Wirt Library and Literary Institute of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing an image depicting a bust of author, statesman, and ninth attorney general of the United States, William Wirt, on a pedestal inscribed with the text "William Wirt Library and Literary Institute, founded March 18th, 1834." Books with "United States," "Rome," and "Greece," written on the spines rest in front of an allegorical female figure that sits next to the monument. On the left, an eagle perched on an olive branch grasps a banner with a Greek phrase written on it. A charter, laurel wreath, and several books written by Wirt, including "Old Bachelor," "Life of P. Henry," "Spy" and "Speeches," lie on the ground in front of the eagle. In the background stands a decrepit pediment from an old Grecian building. The William Wirt Library and Literary Institute, a social and intellectual club, formed one month after Wirt's death in 1843., Not in Wainwright., Issued to J.J. Richards, signed by D. One hundred copies of the lithograph were printed by Sinclair's shop in February of 1843.

Title: Alois Senefelder. Inventor of lithography
Description: Book illustration containing a portrait of Senefelder in a slightly draped oval frame bordered by scenes, pictorial details and vignettes representative of the lithographic trade. Frame contains a plate marked "1800" to represent the year of the invention of lithography. Pictorial details of lithographer's tools including a pen, ink pot, etching needle, straight edge, compass, sponge, brush, palette, and ink roller flank the upper edges of the frame. Scenes of a lithographic printer rolling ink on a stone on a hand press (left) and a lithographic artist using a hand rest to draw a portrait on stone from a sketch at his drawing table (right) adorn the lower edges. Scenes also include stones stored in a library of shelves and resting against the hand press as well as the artist's portfolio laying against his drawing table. Vignette shows a steam powered lithographic press framed as the base of the pedestal of the portrait. Duval & Hunter, the partnership between P.S. Duval's son Stephen C.
