Title: Philadelphia Fire Department Relief Association. [membership certificate]
Description: Certificate containing four vignettes depicting a variety of horse-drawn fire engines and fire fighting vehicles. Vignettes include a steam engine, hook and ladder truck, and ambulance. Bundles of firefighting equipment, including a hose, ladder, fire hydrant, hooks, and ax, flank each side of the text. The seal of the city of Philadelphia bordered by fire helmets and lanterns and the seal of the Fire Department appears at the top and bottom, respectively. A twisting fire hose divides pictorial elements. Each lower corner contains a fire fighter at work. Lower left figure rescues a bare-chested person and the lower right figure uses a hose. Description: Civil war-era advertisement containing seven titled views promoting the manufactory (orginally established in 1836 as a foundry for castings) on the 400 block of Washington Avenue. Central view shows the "Front View" of the foundry. Soldiers march in front of the "Southwark Foundry" building that is adorned with signage advertising "Merrick & Sons Engineers & Machinests." An omnibus stops near the foundry to allow the passing of troops who are greeted by a small group of women. In the foreground, a six-horse team truck transports a large pipe, as behind it, a truck without a load follows. A family waits to cross the street because of the trucks. Also shows a rail truck loaded with barrels and large cylinders parked in front of the loading bay of the factory. Across the street men inspect large pipes on blocks in the left of the image. Description: Clever advertisement in the style of trompe l'oeil containing examples of the lithographer's work interlayered on top of a black background. Includes billheads, bills of laden, checks, maps and plans, marine and landscape views, portraiture, animal portraiture, sheet music, professional cards and advertisements. Some of the corners of the prints curl up. Pictorial elements of note include a portrait of Aloys Senefelder, the inventor of lithography; the business card of lithographic artist "A. Newsam"; advertising prints showing Duval's "Lithographic Establishment," and the Merchant's Exchange; and sheets of advertisement text in script promoting Duval's ability to "execute orders at short notice," his types of prints, and the advantages of the "facility" and "cheapness" of "facsimiles" for businesses. Description: Shows the 4-2-0 steam locomotive "Lafayette" built in 1837 by the company started by William Norris and Col. Stephen H. Long in 1836. An engineer operates the locomotive. The locomotive, built for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, was the first 4-2-0 to contain a leading truck and became the model for steam engines. Description: Fire company certificate containing five vignettes bordered by patriotic and firefighting iconography. Vignettes depict the Fairmount Waterworks, including boys fishing on the canal lock; a circular industrial building, possibly the Spring Garden Water Works; company volunteers rushing hand pumps through Fairmount past Reservoir Hill; the station dog sleeping near the company steam engine in front of the firehouse on the 2200 block of Wood Street; and volunteers, surrounded by a crowd of spectators, fighting the fire at a large city building. Iconography includes helmets with the company number "25," fire hoses, trumpets, and belts as well as the American eagle holding the U.S. shield and flanked by flags over the company motto "Our Motto is Our Name, Always Ready for Public Good." Description: Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters rushing a steam engine marked with the company motto down a city street past the Odd Fellows Hall, Frankford; a steam engine parked at the company fire station on Church Street; and fire fighters surrounded by spectators battling a fire of the Frogmore Mills cotton factory, Frankford. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hose, a ladder, an axe, a trumpet and other tools are drawn bundled together to form decorative elements on both sides. A small oval portrait of Commodore Stephen Decatur in a laurel wreath frame above intertwined American flags and the company motto "Ever Prompt to a Call" adorns the top. Description: Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters surrounded by spectators, battling the July 12, 1866 fire at the "Tackawana" (i.e., Tacony) Print Works in Frankford; a steam engine parked in the company fire station on Frankford Avenue between Sellers and Oxford streets; and fire fighters rushing a horse-drawn steam engine past a church. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hose, a ladder, an axe, a trumpet and other tools are drawn bundled together to form decorative elements on both sides. A small oval portrait of George Washington adorns an arch at the top. An American eagle rests on top of the portrait and clutches an American flag that is intertwined over the arch that is printed "First in War. First in Peace. First in the Hearts of His Country Men." Description: Membership certificate for members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows containing a decorative border of Gothic elements and emblems, vignettes, and scenes representing the degrees, tenants, and activities of the benevolent organization. Scenes show odd fellows assisting the indisposed and enfeebled, tutoring children, and assisting in a burial. Title: Diploma of the Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society
Description: Fair certificate containing vignettes and scenes related to agriculture, horticulture, and industrial arts. At the top, a female allegorical figure, sits upon a rug-covered throne with her arms outstretched. She is flanked by symbols of agriculture, including wheat, farm produce, and livestock. On the sides, vignettes depict tools and products of the book arts and fine arts, a threshing machine, a steam locomotive, and stems of flowers, and a grape vine. At the bottom, a historical scene of Egyptians slaves, in front of the pyramids and under the view of an overseer, cutting wheat with sickles is contrasted to a farmer harvesting his field with a horse-drawn reaper. The Pennsylvania State Agricultural Society was founded in 1851 by representatives from 50 counties with the object to "foster and improve agriculture, horticulture, and the domestic and household arts." Title: Headquarter Infantry Corps National Guards [membership certificate]
Description: Membership certificate containing views and vignettes related to the Pennsylvania Militia. Central view shows troops on display in front of their tents at a militia campground. Men and women spectators watch the troops from near the tent of the commander in the foreground. The commander's tent, flanked by guards on foot and horseback, and four other tents, faces away from the troops who stand in formation. Also includes vignettes above, to the sides, and below the certificate text. Top vignette shows an exterior of the National Guards Hall built 1856-1857 at 518-520 Race Street. Troops form lines in front of the building. Vignette is in an oval frame that is partially covered in laurel, and bordered by cannons, swords, a drum, a spy glass, bayonets draped in cloth and adorned with wreaths, and medals. Description: Membership certificate containing four vignettes depicting people interacting with animals. Shows a deer carcuss dropped in the street from the back of a speeding game wagon; a dog lying, on guard, next to a baby sleeping in a cradle; a soldier's horse nuzzling its fallen rider; and a woman feeding seed to fowls in a pasture. Scroll, floral, and horticultural elements border the text and vignettes. Description: Membership certificate for the African American fraternal organization containing an allegorical view that includes Odd Fellow iconography. Shows the female figures of Justice and Truth standing on globes and flanking a framed view of an ark at sea. Justice holds a sword and scale and Truth holds a torch, serpent, and a mirror from which a light shines. Visible within and bordering the view are Odd Fellow symbols, including the sickle and hourglass, dove, skull and crossbones, the lamb, heart-in-hand, and the lion. Description: Fire company certificate containing a central view, vignettes, and firefighting iconography. Central view shows the company's fire station at Queen Street below Sixth Street. Two men and a dog sit in front of a fenced lot adjacent to the station. Vignettes show volunteers drawing a hand pump past the station in "1857" and a church in "1864"; firefighters battling the "Burning of the Ironsides" at League Island on December 16, 1866; and fighting the blaze from a boiler explosion at "Merrick's Foundry" on April 7, 1864. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hose, helmets, and axes are drawn layered together to form decorative elements in the upper corners. Description: Advertisement showing an exterior view of the brewery complex operated as Peter Schemm & Son 1887-1908 that was originally built in 1855 and expanded between 1885 and 1887. The depicted red brick buildings include the brew house, storerooms, office building, and carriage house. The roofs are adorned with a cupola, smoke stacks, an American flag, and a weather vane. One building also contains a date marker (1885). Pedestrians, including boys in baseball uniforms and a family, walk in front of the brewery. Workers convene near the entrance and handle horses at and depart with drays and wagons at driveways and cartways of the complex. The cherubs hold tubes of cream and ribbons adorned with the medallions of the "seven silver and two gold medals awarded by the institutes of Philadelphia New York and Boston." The eagle holds a medallion in his beak. Also contains four images of medals in the corners. Description: Anniversary reproduction of the contracted Scull & Heap panoramic cityscape view originally published by London engraver Thomas Jeffreys in 1756 showing Philadelphia from across the Delaware River. Depicts the riverfront (South to Vine streets) developed with residential and mercantile buildings, piers and wharves, and major landmarks. Landmarks (numbered in the print) include Christ Church, the State House, Presbyterian Church, Dutch Calvinist Church, the Court House, Quaker Meeting House, High Street Wharf, Mulberry, Sassafrass, Vine and Chestnut streets, the drawbridge, and "cornmill" on Windmill Island. Pedestrian traffic is visible along the riverfront and heavy maritime traffic, including a ferry transporting cattle to New Jersey, dominates the foreground. Title: Plan of the United States dry dock, at Philadelphia, on the new system of the sectional floating dock, basin, & railways, now constructing by contract with Mess. Dakin & Moody Area available for docking in the plan 350 by 90 feet, 31, 500 square feet. Area available for docking in the U.S. dry dock at Norfolk, 210 by 60 feet, 12, 000 square feet. It will be observed that area available for docking in this dry dock is twice and a half greater than in the U.S. stone dry dock at Norfolk, enabling the former to receive a vessel covering twice and half as much space as the utmost limit of the latter. It will also be observed that the efficiency of the Norfolk dock, is limited to docking one ship of the line at a time, of about 200 feet in length, whereas the new Philadelphia dock, will be able to dock three war steamers of 350 feet in length each, and ten ships of the line all at the same time. The Norfolk dock cost $962, 459 and the cost of one on that plan capable of taking only one vessel 350 by 90 feet, estimated on the same basis would be $2, 406, 147 or about three times the contract price of the Philadelphia dock

A three-masted frigate rests in dry dock on land and a three-masted sidewheeler rests in dry dock on the floating dock in the river. Two workers stand on the deck of the sidewheeler. Title: View of the launch of the U.S. ship of war Pennsylvania From the Navy Yard at Philadelphia, July 18th 1837
Description: View showing several spectators on vessels in the Delaware River watching the launch of the largest sailing ship built to that date by the U.S. Several tall ships, rowboats, and sailboats filled with spectators congest the river as the ship glides out from its storage house. In the background, cityscape is barely visible behind the several masts of the spectator ships. Pennsylvania, one of nine ships authorized by Congress in April 1816 to carry at least 74 guns, was designed and built 1821-1837 by Samuel Humphreys in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The ship remained in service until 1842 when she became a receiving ship for the Norfolk Navy Yard, where she was burned at the onset of the Civil War. The first U.S. Navy Yard was established by shipbuilder Joshua Humphreys and Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert in 1801 in Southwark. Title: Scott Legion of the City of Philadelphia [certificate]
Description: Certificate containing vignettes and a scene related to General Winfield Scott and the Mexican American War (1846-1848). Vignettes show a portrait of the older Scott, attired in his uniform, bordered by the American and Pennsylvania flags, the American eagle, and medals. Below, on each side of the portrait, two young members of the Scott Legion, in uniform, stand, with rifles, on pedestals inscribed with the names of Scott's victorious battles during the war. Scene depicts soldiers in battle and charging a fort on a hillside in the presence of the "Scott Legion" monument (located in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.). The monument, visible behind a decorative wrought iron fence, contains an eagle and the seal of Pennsylvania, and was erected in honor of legion members who had died since the war with Mexico. Description: Busy street view showing Independence Hall during the year of the Centennial Exhibition, a celebration through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art for the centennial of the United States. Independence Hall was built 1732-1748 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley at 520 Chestnut Street. Also shows the old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans (500 Chestnut); Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut); and the Public Ledger Building built 1866-1867 (600-606 Chestnut). Pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles, including carriages, coaches, and street cars, congest the sidewalks and roadway.
