Title: Reliance Portable Boat Company's line of portable iron boats for the transportation of goods between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
Description: Advertisement for the shipping company established by John Dougherty as Reliance Transportation Company circa 1835. Company operated on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of inclined planes opened in 1834 that transported canal boats, box cars, and carriages by horse and steam engine to connect the east and west branches of the Pennsylvania Main Line canal. Contains two views of canal boats on trucks being transported on the railroad by locomotive. Upper image depicts a bird's eye view of a locomotive that is hauling boat sections approaching an incline to the canal. A long canal boat traverses the waterway. In the background, a farm and farmland are visible on the numerous hillsides. Title: View of the launch of the U.S. ship of war Pennsylvania From the Navy Yard at Philadelphia, July 18th 1837
Description: View showing several spectators on vessels in the Delaware River watching the launch of the largest sailing ship built to that date by the U.S. Several tall ships, rowboats, and sailboats filled with spectators congest the river as the ship glides out from its storage house. In the background, cityscape is barely visible behind the several masts of the spectator ships. Pennsylvania, one of nine ships authorized by Congress in April 1816 to carry at least 74 guns, was designed and built 1821-1837 by Samuel Humphreys in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The ship remained in service until 1842 when she became a receiving ship for the Norfolk Navy Yard, where she was burned at the onset of the Civil War. The first U.S. Navy Yard was established by shipbuilder Joshua Humphreys and Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert in 1801 in Southwark. Description: Disaster scene showing the aftermath of the explosion of the factory of Professor Samuel Jackson located in South Philadelphia. Shows people fleeing, trapped, and engulfed in flames at the ruins of the burning factory. In the foreground, a man rushes to cover a man's body that has had its head and arm amputated; men throw buckets of water and blankets on women on fire; individuals carry the wounded; comfort the survivors; rush in with buckets; and hose the fire. Independence Hall was built 1732-1748 after the designs of Andrew Hamilton and Edmund Woolley at 520 Chestnut Street. Also shows the old City Hall built 1790-1791 after the designs of David Evans (500 Chestnut); Congress Hall built 1787-1789 (540-558 Chestnut); and the Public Ledger Building built 1866-1867 (600-606 Chestnut). Pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles, including carriages, coaches, and street cars, congest the sidewalks and roadway. Couples and families promenade, a man and women travel on horseback, and a man carries a sack over his shoulder. American flags adorn most of the buildings. Title: Hibernia Fire Engine company, No. 1, of Philadelphia Instituted 1752. Assembling for parade, October 5th 1857
Description: View showing members of the volunteer fire company gathering by their hand-powered Philadelphia-style fire engine (built 1843 by John Agnew) in front of their firehouse (built 1852) on Evelina Street between Second, Third, Walnut and Chestnut streets. The members, including company president Colonel James Page, wear their full regalia of hats, capes, and belts. Many of the men also carry horns and a hatchet. A few spectators informally watch the gathering. Women and couples peer from the windows of a neighboring building and boys sit on the brick wall of the courtyard attached to the fire house. The four-story firehouse is painted with a large "1" on the side and friezes are marked with the institution and incorporation dates, 1752 and 1840, respectively of the company. Also shows the company hose truck on the sidewalk and the station dog lying beside the ornately decorated engine. The engine contains painted details including eagles, angels, harps, and the figure of Liberty. On October 5, 1857, over one hundred regional volunteer fire companies participated in the Firemen's Parade that processed through Philadelphia with John F. Gibson as chief marshal. The parade honored the volunteers through the presentation of tokens of appreciation from their constituents, such as banners and horns, and a venue to celebrate the improved apparatus of the various companies., Manuscript note on recto: To Hist Soc from H.W. Title: Philadelphia Zouave Corps Pennsylvania Volunteers
Description: Shows the troops of the 114th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, led by four drummers and four buglers marching past the old City Hall, Independence Hall, and Congress Hall on the 500 block of Chestnut Street. Title: To Mrs. Amelia Bloomer The new costume polka composed for the piano by Mathias Keller
Description: Sheet music cover containing a portrait of a woman attired in a bloomer costume, standing in front of the storefront of music publishers Lee & Walker on the 600 block of Chestnut Street. The lady holds a blue parasol, and wears a corseted pink-colored coat and pale yellow skirt over her white bloomers. A model harp adorns the door of the music store in which a female patron wearing a bloomer costume enters. Also shows the neighboring J. A. Robinson bookstore (162, i.e., 632 Chestnut). Pedestrians, including another woman in bloomers, walk on the sidewalk, past the store, and look in its window.
