Some people cluster around the carriages, and a person in the foreground adjusts the wheel of their carriage. A pier is visible in the distance. Jersey Wash Day, also known as Salt Water Day or Ocean Day, was an annual event held the second Saturday of August near Wreck Pond in Sea Girt. Farmers living twenty to thirty miles from Sea Girt came to the sea to spend a day bathing and celebrating. - Glass negative showing Lucy the Elephant, a large elephant-shaped novelty structure with a small pavilion on its back designed by James V. Lafferty, Jr. (1856-1898). The structure is seen from a distance across a field and is surrounded by smaller wooden structures including a freestanding rounded entryway. Lafferty received a patent in 1881 for animal shaped buildings, and hired architect William Free to design an elephant-shaped building for South Atlantic City, now Margate. The building was sold in 1887 to Anton Gertzen, renamed Lucy in 1902, and remained a popular tourist site. The building housed variously a restaurant, office, cottage, and tavern. The building is located on the corner of Main Street and Church Lane and has two floors above the shop on the first floor. - Glass negative showing a view of the De la Plaine House, a three-story building seen from across a brick road lined with trolley tracks at 5521-5523 Germantown Avenue. The first floor of the building houses a storefront with various kinds of merchandise piled on the sidewalk under an awning. Trees line the sidewalk to the side of the house and a streetlight is visible in the foreground. James De la Plaine settled in Germantown in 1691. Before his death in 1750, he built a house. It was afterward owned by E.B. Paramore and used as a corner store before the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Company bought the property in 1885. The Rev. B. The first floor houses a shop with some of its wares displayed outside. A horse-drawn cart stands on the street in front of the building. James De la Plaine settled in Germantown in 1691. Before his death in 1750, he built a house. It was afterward owned by E.B. Paramore and used as a corner store before the Germantown Mutual Fire Insurance Company bought the property in 1885. - Glass negative showing the Civil War monument in Market Square. The monument consists of a tall pedestal with a statue of a soldier on top and is surrounded by trees, lampposts and a low fence. Two men stand next to the fence. First called The Green, Market Square was established from land originally owned by James De la Plaine as early as 1703. As a center of community activity, Market Square contained not only market stalls but also the prison and stocks. Samuel B. Morris planted many of the Square’s original trees. Prominent buildings situated around the Square include the Deshler-Morris House, the German Reformed Church, and the Fromberger-Harkness House. The Market Square monument, built in 1883, commemorates the contributions of soldiers to the Civil War. Designed as a Union soldier, it rests on a pedestal made from granite taken from Devil’s Den, Gettysburg. The fence surrounding the monument was constructed from old musket barrels and bayonets. The Germantown Meeting began circa 1690, shortly after the settling of the area. Smaller meeting houses existed on this land until a larger building was built in 1869 by Hibberd Yarnall from designs by Addison Hutton. During the 1827 Quaker split, the meeting remained affiliated with the Orthodox sect. - Glass negative showing the fountain designed in honor of prominent Irish or Catholic Revolutionary heroes that was erected 1875-1877 by the national temperance society at Fountain Avenue and Avenue of the Republic on the Centennial grounds. The monument designed in the shape of a maltese cross by Herman Kirn contains statues of Father Theobold Matthew (Irish temperance reformer), Charles Carroll (only Catholic signer of the Declaration), Commodore Barry (Irish-born naval commander known as the Father of the American Navy), and Archbishop Caroll (first Catholic Bishop of the U.S.) mounted on fountain pedestals. The statues surround the central sculpted figure of Moses who holds the Ten Commandments. The Moses sculpture rests upon a rock-mound within a marble basin. Water flows over the rocks into a pool.
